Don’t you get put out for the

gasroscopy? Or am I thinking of the endoscopy…..? hmm…..

Who performed it on you? Will you be going to Dr Dong for your

manometry? I agree that it is very odd that you are having the 24 hour

test done…. There is also someone else having that done very soon again

here…. I’ll let that person post it for themselves though! I

am very interested in hearing how all your testing goes, as we had the same

surgeon, and I can only imagine I will be following in your footsteps in five

years. How often are you currently getting spasms? I don’t

think I’ve had one for a few weeks…. Can’t talk about them

though, cuz that’s when they come on! J

5 year post

op check-up

Hi everyone - As part of my

five year checkup I just had the esophageal transit test and a

gastroscopy. Had not had a gastroscopy since I was diagnosed six

years ago, and had forgotten how unpleasant it was. However, I heard the

Doctor tell a Student Doctor that he likes to do it at this stage to check out

the mucosa, the lining of the Esophagus. Everything is fine but he has

suggested I have the manometry wherein I would be monitored for 24 hours

to check the acid content coming up from the stomach. I

thought this was odd as I have no acid reflux and do not suffer from

heartburn, but apparently the gastroscopy shows I am retaining some

liquid in my esophagus. The odd time I have a small spasm which

could be related. He says the choice is mine whether I have it or not,

but it is a precautionary measure. Being a teaching Doctor, they want all the

information they can get too just for the record. Even though I would

like to let " sleeping dogs lie " as I really have minimal problems

now, I more than likely will go ahead with the test in the New

Year. Speaking of the New Year - I hope all fellow achalasians have

a happy and especially healthy 2005.

Good Morning -I believe the gastroscopy and endoscopy are the same. Dr. Finley did the test and he sprayed my mouth and throat with something that tasted like gasoline I swear. I had an I.V. too but I don't think it was used. The spray did the trick. It was just a little uncomfortable but he is very gentle and I did gag a couple of times, but certainly no pain. I get spasms very seldom and they are gone almost immediately once I take the Gaviscon which works for me. He said the tests were all fine and the mamometry is precautionary and entirely up to me. I'm not looking forward to it but I think it would be silly of me not to have it.....the more we know the better.... right! Yes, I am going to Dr. Dong for this test. I am so glad you are doing so well . I am glad Dr. Finley did the surgery too, that was a big plus for you. Take care, and have a nice Christmas....................Love

Hello again !!

Still not totally clear… you said

you did gag… didn’t he put you out??? When I had mine, all I

remember is them spraying the back of my throat, and then I was out. They

put me out through the IV, I know that much J I am just a little

worried though now… that they didn’t put you out. Yuck! Oooh..

I sure hope they did!

Hi ...sorry for the confusion - they may have put something in the I.V. but it certainly didn't put me out. He was talking to me the nurse and the student Doctor through the whole procedure which I would guess took less than 10 minutes. When it was over I asked " Is that it?" and he said Yes and that was it. They kept telling me not to drive, etc. because I was impaired, but quite honestly that's not how it felt. I believe the throatspray numbed my throat and probably sedated me to a degree because it really wasn't too bad. Anyway don't worry - this was a five year check-up remember and you've gots lot of living to do in the meantime. Did Dr. Finley do this test or was it someone else? I had my first one done 6 years ago at UBC Hospital and the Gastro Specialist Dr. Freeman did that one. I was more sedated for that but again by no means was I "out". Bye again.....................
