Guest guest
Cindi, You crack me up! You just blurt it out with such confidence! I just wanted to relate…I’m sometimes ashamed because I can out belch my boys! LMAO Sandi Re: still throwing up Ann- I belch like a man since my surgery, so I can relate. but otherwise, I'm doing well. Where did you have your surgery done? Was it the same place as the first surgery? Just wondering....maybe they didn't cut enough? Did they do a wrap? Can you drink cold carbonated stuff? That's mostly all I drink, sometimes I drink it normally, but if something's stuck or trying to come back (I don't throw up) I sip sip sip slowly until it slides on through. It's weird because all this " water " talk makes me gag--water gets stuck when I'm eating-- goes down better alone and cold. Lori
Guest guest
Ann, Do you drink a lot of water to get the food down? We still don't have any peristalsis, so if you aren't washing the food down, it will stay stuck in your E. Just a thought. Guest guest
Hi Ann, I have been thinking about you. When you say the doctor did a 'ballooning did he explain whether he was simply stretching the oesophageal sphincter or actually tearing the muscle [of the LES]. If they simply stretch the lower oesophageal sphincter then it is not that successful and usually does not last. However if it is torn then it looses its ability to contract and that is what you are aiming for and the way an experienced gastroenterologist will do the procedure. When he did this 'ballooning did he also clean out the collected food in the lower oesophagus ? This is also important because even though the LES is now supposed to be open not all of the old compacted food collected there will go down of its own accord. So I have been told. There are also different balloon sizes. Did you have a fundoplication done when they did the Heller ? A fundoplication can sometimes be too tight and cause the problems of achalasia. Have you seen your barium x-rays? Is your oesophagus dilated ? I had a Heller's myotomy with a Dor fundoplication and it was not a great success. I have subsequently had a dilatation using a size 3 balloon. I think a 4 is the largest, but can't remember] At the time the gastroenterologist also cleaned out all the accumulated food in the lower oesophagus. The result was an 80% improvement. My own theory is that when there is a build up of food in the oesophagus there is eventually not enough space for more and that is when you get regular regurgitation and foam. I have had only two bouts of regurgitating in the past 6 months and those were both a genuine 'stickage' - I could feel it stick high up - not just a pressure feeling and then up it came. I have a large diverticulum [pouch] and a very dilated oesophagus so it is easy for food to accumulate. To prevent the accumulation of food I now have a mainly liquid diet - mostly soups made from ordinary food liquidised with a stick blender. If I have something solid I am aware of it sitting there for ages so limit my solid snacks to special occasions. Not an ideal way to live but bearable. Do ask your doctor lots of questions and let us know what he has to say - good wishes - I am in a similar boat so can really understand.
