*cough, cough*. My South Floridian feelings are a little hurt ;) Key West is not all that bad.

No offense intended, Jo! :o) I have more than my fair share of FL relatives and friends, too! :o) It's just not my choice for a cruise destination... given a choice between KW and St. , Grand Cayman, or just about any other Caribbean island, KW comes in dead last every time!

It is actually fun--you name it diving, boating, skiing.

But IMO the snorkeling there doesn't even compare to the VI's / Caymans / etc. And part of the fun of taking a Caribbean cruise is going to foreign locations and seeing something different/new. What's the fun in taking a cruise to the USA when you live in the USA in the first place? :oP (and if I want to hear people speaking Spanish, I'll just go to Miami or California)

I must add, that it is not all that "family friendly," in the traditional sort of way.

I agree. The aquarium is nice, but SMALL ! There was little else to do there w/ a child in tow...

January would be the best time because the weather is actually--dare I say--cool?

That's an understatement! KW is located in that "fickle" region.... sometimes it thinks it's North America, sometimes it thinks it's a Tropical Island. The first time we were there in mid-January, the weather was in the mid 70's (Fahrenheit, for our metric members!) and the water was cool for snorkeling ( was just 12 months old, and at first we took him in a kiddie-floatie-tube while we went snorkeling, taking turns on the surface while the other dove. But the water was much too cold for him - he was turning blue and shivering, so we had to take turns sitting on the boat w/ him. The second time was again in January (late January) and the temperature was in the mid to upper FIFTIES!!!! Who the heck wants to go on a tropical cruise and wear long pants and a jacket? (That was why we didn't even bother to get off the boat.... too dang depressing!) On other days it probably gets well into the 80's there in January, though.... it just can't make up its mind! LOL

Going on a cruise during September-October-November is like gambling with Mother Nature!

All of my tropical vacations have been in either late December, January, or early April, and I've never had weather-related problems, so I'll remember your "gambling" advice whenever planning a cruise in the future.

Although I wouldn't want to be there now w/ all the flooding problems, when we were in Dominican Republic in December 1998, I just LOVED the rainstorms -- they lasted 5-10 minutes and were just once a day on average, the rain was almost shower/bath warm on your body, and the storm started/stopped w/ no warning and the sun was shining the whole time it rained. We just made sure our towels and camera were protected in plastic bags, and we never even got off the beach for a rainstorm -- there was no point, b/c by the time we would have gotten back to our room, the storm was already over! :o)

Debbi in MI, getting depressed at all this talk of the Caribbean islands....

--- Oh Deb,

No offense taken! LOL! Like I said, the place is really not my cup

of tea anymore. I'd rather go to the Carolina Mountains! But you're

right the Caymans, Jamaica--now that is fun in the sun.

I will tell you though, watching the sunset from Key West is an

opportunity one should experience at least once during one's lifetime.

Nothing quite like it! But don't bring the little kids if you don't

want to have to explain why people are doing some straaaannnnngeee

stuff!

Jo :)

Get the sunsets without having to explain, just a few miles North on

Marco Island (where my parents live). It is gorgeous. Having said

that, I am a HUGE (and I'm not just talking about my physical size)

Hemingway fan.....So I love the Keys as well!!!

Debbi in MI, who is happy to share some of our 11 inches of rain from the

month of May with the parched Floridians
