A few weeks ago Debbie mailed about heart burn but I could not understand if the difference if the heart burn is in the esphagus or in the stomach, because I have a trrible burning feeling in the esphagus and I found out that it occurs after eating fruit especially at night. Can any one tell me please what is the best to do about this terrible feeling which causes me a lot of pain and makes me unable to sleep. Thank you Hanan Hanan, In general, most doctors reccomend that do not eat right before bed, that you should not go to sleep until 2-3 hrs. after eating. Also, I think one of the things I was told to avoid, diet wise, was any type of citrus fruit. If you do these things, it may help your heartburn.Jan from Northern Kentucky
Guest guest
This may sound weird....but like Jan said, yes don't eat the citrus fruits or within a couple hours prior to reclining/sleeping....but also, I have found, that a rather successful way to clear my esophagus prior to bed is....PEANUTS & COFFEE. A small handful of peanuts (chewed well) has alot of weight to them and seems to push themselves down really well weithout floating or clogging and the hot coffee relaxes and opens things up and flushes it all through. Another achalasia patient on the phone last night with me told me a bagel or brownie with a couple glasses of milk every night did it for him. But I like my peanuts....at least I am getting protein! (Of course he is getting calcium) But whatever you do....avoid the citrus! Let us know how it goes. Joy
Guest guest
Oh, how I would LOVE a bagel... lol! I am still waiting for surgery. I just found out I am not on the list for my surgeons next week available in the OR, so I am told it is at LEAST July 19th and later… the waiting game continues… Chilliwack, BC Re: Heart Burn or Heart pain This may sound weird....but like Jan said, yes don't eat the citrus fruits or within a couple hours prior to reclining/sleeping....but also, I have found, that a rather successful way to clear my esophagus prior to bed is....PEANUTS & COFFEE. Guest guest
Hanan Hi, I find that eating most kinds of fruit is too acid for me. You have to just try and find something you can eat by trial and error. Sometimes cooked fruit with or with out sugar is OK. In fact anything acid irritates - I got some sachets of magnesium and they are flavoured with ' a touch of lemon' - I think there is a whole lemon in each sachet. I had to have some ant-acid afterwards. Oats porridge sometimes helps to counter that acid. Are you on some medication for acid - such as Nexium, Losec, or Lanzor ? Speak to your doctor about it. It is important to try and prevent this acid from irritating your E as it can lead to strictures. There is a difference between the acid produced by your stomach which may enter your E via the LES and that produced in your dilated E. The stomach acid is much worse and very corrosive and really burns. The other kind just causes a bad heartburn like pain. If the acid is from your stomach then medication like Nexium etc. will help and it is necessary for your doctor to prescribe it for you. If the acid is formed by the food rotting in your dilated E then you must try and wash the E out as best you can and not eat anything that is acid. You could also try and sleep with your head higher than your feet by putting a couple of bricks under the head of your bed to raise it, or using lots of pillows or sleeping sitting in a recliner chair. When you lie flat the acid tends to run up into the Oesophagus I am also one of those who find it better to eat something before I go to bed [perhaps this helps neutralises the acid] but we seem to be very much in the minority, and the don't eat for 3+ hours before bed seems the rule for most people.
