Guest guest
I have been diagnosed with achalasia in Feb. 2004 after suffering with swallowing problems, vomiting and losing 20 pounds. I have had endoscopy and dilatation with balloon done Feb. 12. Progress has been really slow for me after endoscopy ... During endoscopy I had yeast infection detected and have been on anti-fungal agent Fluconazale-150 since March 1 and I am experiencing some improvement but it is very slow progress. My Doctor has a Barium X-ray appointment arrange for March 19 to check my swallowing and to see if yeast infection is cause of my swallowing difficulties and heartburn attacks. I believe Doctor's plans are to try a second dilatation in May with a bigger balloon if yesst infection problems and swallowing problems still persist. Then surgery would be the next step if I was still in pain. I have had this problem since October of 2003 , and I did not get medical assessment until January. 1)Are yeast infections common with Alchasia? 2)Is return to normal from ti s illnes always this slow? 3)I tire so easily .... I don't have any pep ... is this common with Alchasia? Is there light at the end of the tunnel? Guest guest
Hi Henry, Welcome - you will get lots of support and encouragement from this group. Fungal infections of the oesophagus are not really common to achalasia. I have had fungal infections in my mouth so I do appreciate your problem - they do take a while to clear up. However, if after a full course of antifungal medication [and you are on a good powerful one] it does not clear up, suggest to your doctor that they check your immunity. If your immunity is down - and there are many reasons for that - then you are likely to get those kind of infections. Have you been on broad spectrum antibiotics recently ? Antibiotocs can also leave you prone to fungal infections. Feeling tired is a common problem. Firstly with achalasia you may not be getting proper nutrients because you are not eating properly. Try taking a vitamin supplement. If you have problems with swallowing pills take the children's vitamin and mineral syrup. Secondly the anti-fungal medication also makes you feel tired. If you go to the website you will find links to information about achalasia or go to www.google.com. and type in the word 'achalasia' in the search. You will find plenty of information about the condition/disease. Return to normal is subjective as you will find - the fungal infection can be cured but if you have true achalasia then one can only hope for improvement by either dilatation or surgery to the lower oesophageal sphincter [ the valve that controls the entry of food to the stomach] Please feel free to ask questions - we are here for you. Best wishes! Guest guest
Henry, Welcome to the group. Like Joan said it may just be that your immunity is low. Everyone responds to a dilation differently. This will depend on how wide your esophagus is, the balloon size used, etc... I sometimes tire easily, this may also be a symptom of weakened immunity. I started taking vitamins recently. Their hard to swallow, but I think it's important.
