I've never heard or read it either, Genia. I'm wondering if it's *that doctor's* grading scale, or some sort of "industry standard". Lemme know what your doc says!

I never heard of this until I read Cindi's post. Can anyone tell me more? I will definitely asking my surgeon about this.Genia in Michigan

When I have time, I will find the site for you!

Also, my doc used this grading when we discussed my condition.

I do know that there are 4 stages of cancer as well....so I don't know if that is something docs do to rate diseases in general or not. Cindi

I do not remember if this is the site I originally read it on...I have been on hundreds of sites in the past 2 months! But this has the same info & there are resources at the bottom. Also, I did a search on Internet Explorer & there were 476 sites with both "achalasia" and "grades", but many of them seemed to refer to grades of dysplasia. I cruised through about 30 sites before realizing I have to go the grocery store before dinner!

What was interesting, however, is that my surgeon pointed out that my esophagus is somewhat dilated, but not a lot yet, I am at grade 2, and that "grades 1 & 2" usually respond the best to Heller treatment. Because I had the grades listed on my clip board in front of me from my research, I just assumed that it was an industry standard.

I do have a friend who is a physician who has some schooling in this area. I will ask him, too. Cindi

Grades on “A” brought back a

sweet memory of my surgeon. After my surgery, I would go to see him and he would

always give me an A-...he’s so funny. (Well he gets an A+ from me! :-)

Thanks for the link Cindi!!! I'm gonna go add that to the "links" section, too, so we always have the link available in the future. If anyone else has other links of interest that aren't already listed, please add them to the appropriate section of the Links section. I think we may have the biggest collection of achalasia-related material in the world right here on our little group! LOLI can't believe that in all the stuff I've read so far, I hadn't seen that yet! Or ever heard it from a GI doc (I've seen several over the past 10 years.) It's just amazing that all the docs are so inconsistent in the way they evaluate and treat this disease. *sigh*

Thanks again for the link!
