Yes, mine are spasms as well. Usually around three big ones.

Sometimes its when my " food " isn't going down...sometimes not.

With the whole virus/autoimmune system consideration for the cause of

this, I was wondering if anyone else has had tonsil problems or

travelled outside of the country. One thing they tested me for was

chagas disease, which has some similar symptoms...I don't have it

though.

Hey - we got snow here again last night too. )

I had chronic problems with ear infections and tonsillitis starting my

freshman year in high school -- senior year I had eleven confirmed cases

of strep (my HMO insurance required 12 cases in one year to qualify for a

tonsillectomy... how stupid is that?) The cycle continued until my early

20's when a doc finally gave me an INJECTION of penicillin (to hopefully

kill off ALL the germies that were harbored in the inner reaches of my

tonsils) rather than just oral antibiotics. I actually went about three

years or so before I got another case of tonsillitis!

When I heard about a possible auto-immune link to achalasia (which for me

started in my early/mid 20's) I immediately blamed my tonsils. But in

talking to people here, I'm finding out that there are people who never

had tonsillitis, people who had their tonsils removed in early childhood

(mine finally came out when I was 28), people w/ lots of stress, people w/

no stress, young people (children even) and old people, and all different

ethnicities, too.

Now my tendency is to believe that there are multiple things that can

trigger or " set off " achalasia in our bodies, and it's not JUST one thing

that causes it -- kinda like there are a million different ways to break

your leg (fall down stairs, car accident, fall off roof, etc.) but it

basically comes down to the fact that an unusual stress is placed on the

bone and the bone breaks. That's how I think of achalasia now.... there

are a million different things that can end up putting the esophageal

nerves through an unusual stress, and some of them actually cause it to

" break " , just like some people who fall down stairs will break their leg

and some won't.

Hope that made sense... I'm posting in the morning before my caffeine

kicks in, and I really messed up yesterday when writing w/o being

completely awake!

I have never had a problem with tonsils. Did have

a double ear infection a couple months before my

first symptom, only ear infection since I was a child.

I am now 34. I have racked my brain trying to figure

out what happened. Have thought ear infection? Had

an MRI that same summer? Scoliosis? Stress? Anxiety?

Something I ate? Who knows could be none of the above

could be a combination of all of the above.

As far as traveling I have been to Mexico several times,

and have been to Colombia, South America a few times.

I was actually just there this past December, my husband

is from Colombia. We brought the kids and had a great

time swimming, horseback riding etc. Then the day

after we came back to Ohio we were sledding!
