Two more excellent answers to the "apraxia and mental retardation association?" question from Candace (You can find email in archives-I'm still trying to keep the amount of posts down, and list each under the name of what is discussed.)

1.

My name is Khalid and I am 14. I have survived Apraxia. Having Apraxia is far from being mental retarded, weird, strange or harmful to others. Some people believe the myth that this is what it means. Most kids with Apraxia are not retarded. Our minds are very good and I know I am not retarded. My brother Jadd has apraxia. He is one of the smartest kids I know. Apraxia and learning disabled people usually have problems learning certain subjects. But not everything. I did have problems in reading, spelling and math. I still have problems with my writing, my hands would hurt when I write to long. My writing is much better now because I use the computer to do most of my work. The spell check helps me. My reading and math has improved the most. Its hard work for me. Sometimes it takes me longer than other classmates. But the good thing is my grades are better than most classmates. I think it's because I do take longer than my friends. Learning disabled students often have very high IQs and talents. I remember when I was a young kid I knew the answers to many things. If I was brave enough I would think about a way to let people know I knew the answers. What upset me, I would give my answer and then my words came out sounding weird. But what's important I did know the answer, even though my words did not sound right. I was far from being retarded, even though kids called me this all the time. It did bother me. I did feel alone at school. But I knew people who helped me know this was not the truth. I also knew the truth. You only have to look at a few famous people with learning disability, Earl , Tom Cruise, Surrandon to know this is often not the case. When you feel that your son is having a hard time, tell him that what he does is a possibility and not a disability. Even though I had problems with learning, My parents never talked as if I had a learning disability. When I was afraid of stuff my dad would say go for it anyway. If things don't work out you will be proud you did your best. He believes in me. This helped me believe I could do things even if it is hard for me. I want to write you to help you feel better about your son. From Khalid Mmustafa@... (Khalid's one of the teenagers with apraxia featured on Inside Edition. You can read more about him at our website, http://www.shopinservice.com/success.htm )

Also, there are very few intelligence measures that are non-language based. You have the right to challenge any low performance resulting from a language based test. Stay in touch, Goodwin dappag3267@...
