Guest guest
Shirley- I usually talk about SSDI, SSI, Medicaid, Medicare, pickle rule, DAC, HBWD, and how benefits change over someone's lifetime. I use a power point where I put each benefit in a different room in a house. (different room = different rules). Please let me know if you would want something in addition. I hope this e-mail finds you well. -Sherri ________________________________ From: Shirley Linden <slpanda2@...> IPADDUnite Sent: Thu, March 10, 2011 7:27:15 AM Subject: Re: Parent Support Group  Hi Sherri, I did not forget about your generous offer to come speak at our Parent Support Group. I am waiting for a couple of people to get back to me. Can you send me a short explanation on what you can share with our group, who you are, etc so I can share it with my group. I am sure they will be anxious to hear you will come and answer some of our many questions. We have a speaker for May so far and possibly April or June but I will let you know for sure and hopefully we can set up a date for you to come and talk. We are a new group and are just starting to get our questions answered, so if you know anyone else we should be asking to speak, please let me know. Thank you so much. Shirley From: Sherri Schneider <benefithelpss@...> Subject: Re: Parent Support Group IPADDUnite Date: Thursday, March 3, 2011, 3:51 PM  Shirley- I would be willing to chat with your parent group about benefits. -Sherri Schneider ________________________________ From: momofchris2007 <slpanda2@...> IPADDUnite Sent: Wed, March 2, 2011 5:28:47 PM Subject: Parent Support Group  Hello all, today was our second Parent Support Group meeting and we are off to a great start. Guest guest
Pickle rule is kind of involved. Reader's Digest Version: I receive SSI because I never worked and paid into FICA. I receive $449.34. I have been on this before I turned 22. My father retires (or dies or becomes disabled himself) and collects Social Security (retirement or disability) for himself. Since SSI has my onset date as before 22, I can now collect SSDI - using my father's work record. He will get a " chunk " monthly (example: $1700) & I will get a different " chunk " monthly. (example: $1200) UT OH - my SSDI is now a problem for Medicaid income rules. BUT NO: Congressman Pickle fixed this problem: Since I went directly from SSI to a parent's work record SSDI, my new SSDI amount will NOT count for Medicaid. ________________________________ From: " sunshinebeaches3@... Guest guest
The Pickle Amendment to Medicaid Regs was sponsored by Representative Pickle in the mid 1980's. Prior to this amendment, a disabled adult child (DAC) of a working parent was worse off when the parent who worked and paid into Social Security died or retired than the child of a parent who never worked or never paid into SSA. The reason was the child would lose his SSI when the parent retired or died because the amount of SSDI as a DAC was greater than the SSI. Unfortunately if the amount of SSDI was greater than the poverty level, he also lost his Medicaid. Because Medicaid is the ticket to services, the adult child of a worker was left in a worse off situation in that he no longer qualified for Medicaid at a time when it was critical to be eligible. Rep. Pickle said that a disabled adult child of a working parent shouldn't be worse off than a disabled adult child of a non working parent. So he sponsored the bill which has his name on it today and is known as the Pickle Amendment. Basically the amendment says " If you were receiving SSI prior to your parent's retirement or death AND if the ONLY thing making you ineligible for Medicaid is the excess income from the DAC benefits, then you will not lose eligibility for medicaid. The Medicaid card is coded as a " qualified Medicaid Beneficiary (QMB) " and the adult child can continue to have group home and other services paid for with the Medicaid card. It is more complicated than the above but that's the basic explanation. Terrie Varnet ________________________________ From: " sunshinebeaches3@...
