I also realize retarded just means delayed. I always think of Liam as delayed compared to how he would have been developing if he didn't have the extra chromosone. He considers himself special, in a good way. And I agree. Once I was asked at a parent's meeting what I would answer if someone asked me if he was special child. I said " He certainly is, very special!! " . One mother called me the next day and said her husband laughed all the way home at that one, he loved it. But the parts about her Mom and her brothers friends...how true. The overnights at their house and pillow fight with . Anyway, when we found out had DS I got involved in Special Olympics. What a surprise to see my ole K-3 grade buddy running the thing. Anyway, kind of funny how time comes back around. Even though is no longer with us, I am staying involved on the local level and when I retire, hopefully Timmy will have a job for me on the national level!! When we were trying to start one up in our county...the website, the phamplets....all talk about mental retardation. It's used in their mission statement, goal, and philosophy. I personally don't have a problem anymore when it's used in this context. In fact, I didn't even notice when used it. But I do NOT use it around children. They hear retardation or mentally retarded and think it's okay to then say Hey,Retard! and that's not acceptable. To tell you the truth, the word " special " is just as irritating to me. She's a " special " girl, she has " special " parents, she is in the " special " class, she rides the " special bus " . It also depends on what else is being said. In other words are they using to devalue someone. I really felt that she wasn't and has put her money where her mouth is with her involvement with people with disablilies.
