speaks truth, for a change. The disparity between rich and poor in

the US is going to bring our economy crashing down around our ears. I have

to admit, I do shop at Wal-Mart now and then, but I trade mostly with Ma and

Pa shops. My grocery store is family-owned, so is my hardware store, drug

store and the nursery where I buy plants. Sure I pay more at these places,

but at least I know the money is going to someone who works for a living

rather than a global corporation that uses slave labor and has the authority

to overrule the economic policies of the US government and other nations!

It is SO HARD to find clothes made in the USA (yes Tim, I am married to a

UNION official (ILA Local 1970) and he would be VERY perturbed if I did not

shop appropriately! I was in JCPenney's one time and could not find one item

Hi!

I'm not in anyway disagreeing with the points you've made. Far from it.

Bigger is usually not better (want to know why the cost of Lumber has gone

up so dramatically? Thank Lowes. They bought up all the lumber futures a

number of years ago. Once they literally owned all the lumber east of the

Mississippi, they more than doubled the cost per board foot.). Capitalism

is ost definitley mot a moral entity it's sole quest is the accumulation

of wealth.

Allow me to ask these questions. Are reatailers such as K-Mart or Ames...

significantly different in their practices than Wal-Mart? I know that

Wal-Mart at least has employee profit sharing.

What are the ethical alternatives to Wal-Mart? Living here in rural

America, there is Wal-Mart & Ames.

Take care,

Kent

I have always been pro-union but you know who started the downslide

with union busting don't you? Not Walmart. It was Reagan. I agree

if it weren't for the unions none of us would have the standard of living we

do now. That was the start of the slippery slope. The first time I heard of

a union agreeing to a pay cut for it's members I knew.

There are many things that are not made in this country at any price,

I will buy American any time I can but if no one is making them how can we.

Companies ship the work out to avoid paying decent wages. Many companies

broke their unions years ago.

Last year a local grocery warehouse, Associated Grocers, which

supplies most of the supermarkets in the area set out to do that too. They

had a disagreement with their truck drivers, and it became not a strike but a

lock-out. Most of us supported the drivers. There were no stores in our

immediate area that were not involved. So many of us, including me, drove

miles away to shop at stores that had a different supplier. It was very

inconvenient and difficult to do this, and cost us more but we supported the

union drivers. So don't tell me I'm not a union supporter. Finally Ass.

Grocers, gave in and settled with the union, and the drivers asked us to come

back. What a relief!

I don't even know if Kmart and Target and other stores are union or

not. But friends who work at Walmart tell me it's a good place to work, not

as much fun as in the commercials but still a good place. I'm sure it varies

from store to store. Our local one is not too large, and we know people

there, and they know us. The people are friendly, and of varying colors,

there seems to be no discrimination. They had a girl in a wheelchair as a

greeter for awhile but she wasn't really able to do it. ( would be

great at that)

Dillard's got in trouble for racial bias, there was a big lawsuit here

in KC and they lost. Employees said at that time they were told to watch

people with wheel chairs and to watch black people. I don't shop there.

Some of the malls we have to walk thru Dillard's because that's where the

elevators are, but I am uncomfortable wondering if they are watching me.

Walmart has not hurt our neighborhood. In fact new small businesses

have moved in since they opened here. I have one friend who has all sorts of

excuses why she doesn't like to shop there but I know her, and what it really

is, is that a lot of black people work there. I will shop where customers

are treated well and employees too. Union or not, these days.

My grocery store is family owned too, by the richest man in town. He owns

I think they are not much different, Kent. That's why I trade with Ma and Pa

stores whenever possible, even though I may pay a bit more. Alas, sometimes

it's not possible because the big corps have run them out of business.

The " Made in the USA " label means nothing, Cheryl, because corporations

I was a delegate to the Texas State Democratic Convention when the Air

Traffic Controllers came to us, begged our forgiveness for their endorsement

of Reagan, and asked us to take them back in. We did. Now the Democratic

Party is as destructive to unions as the Republicans and I've washed my

hands of both. I even call them the Republicrats because, as Wallace

said, " There's not a dime's worth of difference. " Never thought I'd be

quoting Wallace!
