I think this is a situation where every child is different. We did AIT for

Danny last year and are currently in the midst of Tomatis. When we did AIT, a

large part of Danny's issues with hearing things that we don't normalized (ie:

he used to hear airplanes that we barely could see in the sky). His receptive

language took a very large leap after we were finished with AIT.

We saw some really good things with AIT. We went to the Center out in

Budd Lake. I really like Dorinne . If anyone is interested, you should

contact her, I am sure that she will be happy to answer any questions.

I know this week she is doing an outreach for AIT in ocean county. She is

planning on doing one in White Plains in Sept.

Hi Diane,

The only treatments that I have tried were concerning the medical issues. I

think it's important to get the brain working properly before anything else.

The only thing I have heard about AIT was in J. Smythes testimony.(link

below) He is now addressing the medical issues, but in his testimony he

states that his son lost the few words he had after AIT.

Here's a great link for AIT -- they will give you a list of practitioners

across the country. Personally, I recommend the Berard method using the EERS

machine. I went to Sally Brockett at IDEA in N HAVEN, CT and it worked

wonders for my sound hyper and hyposensitive son!!! He mastered programs we'd

Hello,

I don't know about being corrected with a few weeks. Our experience with AIT

was a good one. But we noticed little changes, and now I really see major

differences in pain threshold. Before Missy would hurt herself she would

barely notice. Now, I don't have a child that throws herself down on

pavement on her knees just to feel something (no she would not cry while

doing this over and over), I have a child that seems to have her sense of

pain becoming more " normal " or what we would call normal. =)

Although her speech has improved dramatically, I count that with everything

else that I have been doing (especially the ALA) We did the AIT in May, and

since then my daughter could easily have a contract with the Memorex people

for commercials, she is extremely loud! =) (which is ten times better than

the silence) Here is the link to who did our AIT and a bit of info in case

you are interested.

Have a good day all,

Kathleen =)

My autistic son had hyperacusis and hypersensitive hearing. He had DAA(Digital

Auditory Aerobics), which is the same as AIT, only using an American made

machine. It only took 10 days. After that he was profoundly changed regarding

his hearing dysfunction. It made a world of difference for him, but is only

effective for those with hearing dysfunction. The DAA or AIT practitioner will

have an extensive evaluation survey, (may be 10 pages long), which will ask

questions like: Does your child cover their ears? Can they hear things long

before you do? Etc...

The Georgiana Institute is the best resource for information. Contact me

directly if you want more information.

I have the disc's at home and have used them occasionally. Actually, I

have done my own kind of therapy with this, and that is playing MOZART in

our home continuasly (we have an intercom stereo system). This has been the

bigger improvement more than AIT. Have talked to a few professors at U of

Utah about this and there are studies about it. Some schools started doing

this too which increased attention and test scores. The mozart factor,

hmmm?

Anyways, another thought is, prep yourself this is a gross question. Do all

of your kids have a problem with ear wax? Was wondering if that has

something to do with some kind of deficiency or fatty acid problems or

mercuralism? My son after a seizure had BLACK one inch succors in his ears,

once cleaned out, he appeared to be quite responsive and cognizent and

verbal. I have to ROUTINELY go to the pediatric office (they just love

this-and by the way I REQUESTED they do this or they are fired ) to clean my

son's ears out. Is this a sign also of allergies? Just wondering?

Secretory IgA deficiency?

Dear Kathy,

I had AIT twice and so did Jen have Generic AIT twice. The disc is not the

same. I was extremely sound sick and that disc would have never did any

good.I was 38 years old when I had my first AIT and life was much better for

me. I spend so much of life sick. I had an audiogram by Henry to

determine exactly what my problem was. She told me at the bottom of what you

know as the sound that create music I had a peak that showed on the

audiogram chart. We were never able to get an audiogram on Jen. That is why

Henry did Generic AIT twice. Every time we tried an audiogram and we

tried many time on Jen ... Jen would shut off and became limp. The sound I

heard during the first days of AIT were sounds that were played to through

the kinetron machine. Parts were missing parts of the music ... very

specific parts the parts that made up the peak that showed on my audiogram.

Because each person hearing is different it would be impossible for a

mass-produced disc to correct a problem like mine. It might work to amuse,

calm, but not correct a hearing problem.

We also own the Mozart's. They work great when she has a tantrum sometimes

.... I like them too.

Oh, I got the Fax. Thank you so much.

Take Care and God Bless

The big difference between AIT or DAA it that the CDs are basically normal, and

the machine modulates the music. Listening to them through a regular CD player

won't work. The premise of DAA is that certain sounds are too painful, and

therefore " tuned out " . Then of course, lots of other things are tuned out too.

For my son, painful was a baby's cry, a cow's " moo " , and even my voice among

other things. After 10 days of listening to this modulated music through

headphones, my voice, the baby and the cow, and a host of other things no longer

bother him.

The " easy listening " type music, including SAMONAS, does nothing to retrain the

brain and the ears for what to tune out and what not to tune out.

I was told that if someone ... child or adult would have swelling in the

brain this would cause the hearing to go off. An example would be the major

stoke my Dad suffer. We did at AIT on him and he improved in communication

drastically, was able to learn to wheel his wheelchair and feed himself. He

could help us get them in out of his wheelchair. We took him shopping and

out to dinner. He knew all his friends and he was very happy. His quantity

of life was improved. Prior to the A.I.T. he only was in a Gerry chair. Two

years after the AIT he contacted a virus and past a way, but because of AIT

he knew his grandchildren and they enjoy being with their grandfather.

Does measles cause swelling in the brain? You could ask someone on the list

of " Auditory Integration Training Practitioners List "

http://www.autism.com/ari/us.html

They may ask you to have an audiogram run.

What was Cameron behavior at the time of the audiogram?

AIT is based on the reading record during the Audiogram.

My AIT worked because

#1 I had the correct problem that could be treated with AIT.

#2 I was functioning so that an accurate reading could be taken during the

audiogram.

I heard of a rumor that there was a woman in Baltimore that could get a

reading on any child. I was afraid to take Jen to her because, I know what

happen the many times we attempt an audiogram on Jen ... She shut down from

what her body perceived as an over stimulation. How can you get a reading on

someone who is out cold sleeping? I was with Jen through each Audiogram and

I do not believe it was at all possible to get any reading from someone who

is sleeping. I am planning on trying to get an audiogram in the future and

possibly A.I.T. again if it is found Jen needs the AIT.

You might want to contact bel Stehli at georgianainstitute@...

The web site is http://www.georgianainstitute.org/

bel and her husband are very kind and wonder people. They have a

wealth of information.

Hear is a cheap idea that we did to try and prepare Jen for the audiograms

and AIT twice.

My husband has a pair of excellent headphones he bought in Germany while in

the service and we used his stereo to play music extremely low to Jen though

the headphones. I bought the cassette tape years ago at a Hallmark Card

Store and it contains Personalized Name Tunes by Kidselebration. Each of

five songs repeats her name throughout the lyrics. I guess she like to hear

her name. This is not AIT, but it did help seem to help Jen.

I have no idea where to find this cassette, but it is wonderful in calming

Jens tantrums and it was a lifesaver for the preparation to audiograms and

AIT.

We had to work our son up to the two half-hour " listening sessions " as he

would (at the time) not allow ANYTHING near his head! So, he started off by

allowing us to put ONE of the headphone pads ON his ear for just a

second...and we built from there. It definately helped in getting him ready

for the real thing.

<< He has had an ABR for hearing where his hearing was said to be normal. >>

ABR?

Regular audiologists don't bother to check how the ears work together or how

the brain interprets and integrates the signals the 2 ears send it - like

ophthalmologists don't bother to check if the eyes work together or the brain

uses the signals they send it properly.

You need to check the religious orientation of all health care practitioners

who do testing on your children - if they don't believe the brain has

anything to do with how the senses are interpreted, they won't find anything

wrong.

Thanks everyone for the information. I am really baffled by the

conflicts here with all the differing protocols. This is as weird as

whose CLO to use or whether to use CLO at all !

Here's the deal. Cameron was 18 months old when he literally stopped

talking overnight ( after MMR ). But he had actualy had such a

horrible reaction to the DTP months earlier that he was hospitalized

with seizures etc . Between the two vaccinations he developed slowly

but eye contact etc was pretty darn good and he spoke clearly in 2

words sentences until the MMR ( which of course we were told was 100%

safe and that there was NOTHING to be worried about ).

Not only did Cameron lose the words he had been speaking since 10

months of age but he started to use screaming instead and he screamed

in a high pitch for hours every day.He screamed to communicate

happiness, sadness and discomfort. It was an AWFUL period for me and

my husband which lasted 2 years.

He also got the typical horrid runny poops and all the joys that that

brought.

We took him to AIT using Carol Swick here in Houston. She was great (

a really nice lady )and his screaming almost completely stopped after

the 10 days. But she then told me he would not ever be able to listen

to music with earphones ! I mean...how practical is that ? So we

hadn't returned. And we never received any CD's...we did the training

at her " office " in her home back then.

He has had an ABR for hearing where his hearing was said to be normal.

So.....what to do !?

Andy,

Its my understanding that ABR testing incorporates the brains response. My

son's testing demonstrated a latency in wave 5 indicative of an auditory

processing disorder. But they have no norm references for children under 5

years of age, so no one can say for certain the significance of this

finding.

Actually, we found Samonas to be extremely helpful with dampening my son's

overall hypersensativities and boosting auditory processing. I credit it

most with allowing my son to be able to be in a crowd and not shut down. The

problem we had with that is that Samonas tends to focus mainly on the

high-end frequencies so while it took care of those problems, he was left

with some low-end difficulties. We're now just starting our second round of

The Listening Program to address those remaining issues. The first round

brought amazing progress with auditory processing speed, focus and a big

conversational language boost but still left some hypersensativities. Others

I know who are doing TLP have seen progress each time it is done so we're

hoping that this round will reduce more sensativities.

I do know that allergies and metals, and probably anything that messes with

your immune system or makes you more sensative, can mess with your auditory

system. I used to be extremely hyperaccousic but it decreased with allergy

and metals treatment.

Would it also clear up an accute case of tinnitus of over 5 years duration?

I would do anything for " peace of mind " !

I have tinnitus, and I did the AIT along with my son when he was treated just

to see if it would help me. (They offered to do a second family member for half

price.) It did not help. But I feel my hearing is a bit better.

Kaye- Are you familiar with AIT (Auditory Integration Training) using

the Audiokinatron from France? The books " The Sound of a Miricle " and

Dancing in the Rain explain the protocol. Sound is modulated in a way that

reduces the childrens sensitive hearing. It is like aerobics for the ears.

It is 30 minutes of listening through head phones twice a day for 10 days. I

have seen wonderful results if the children's food sensitivties and central

nervous ssytems are stabilized before therapy.

I haven't heard of it, but I sure would like to know more. Sound

sensetivity is Logan's biggest problem, and I really believe he would

be able to start talking if this could be worked on. I just haven't

found anyone around here that knows how to help him in that area. If

you could give me more info. on this, I would REALLY appreciate it.

Thanks,

Kaye
