Hi (and everyone)

Kirsten is doing really well, thanks. Her incisions aren't too red

for now, although the bridge of her nose is still a little swollen

12 days after surgery. She didn't need nasal wiring, the surgeon

just shortened the tendon and did the Y-V canthoplasty. I am

expecting the scars to become red especially around 3 - 4 months.

Thanks for the advice on Mederma cream. I've checked it out and

discovered it is readily available in the States, I will find out if

it is also available here in the UK. It can't do any harm to try it.

For now I am just using chloramphenicol ointment on the areas with

stitches in and it is looking great.

I have posted 2 new pics in her photo album for all to see the

result so far. It will be interesting to see how her eyes change

over the next 6 months, but we are delighted with the result.

Take care

Hi Oh wow! What a difference the last op has made to Kirstens eyes, she looks so grown up too! I remember what Kirsten looked like in December at the London meeting and the results are fantastic, even more beautiful cos you can see more of her lovely blue eyes. Holly is now due her 1st operation on Monday 4th September so hopefully we can come along to the next London meeting with her eyes bigger! Fingers crossed no illnesses this time. Take care and thanks again for posting the photos of Kirsten. Send her a big kiss from me Lucy xxx <parsonsfamily108@...> wrote: Hi (and everyone)Kirsten is doing really well, thanks. Hi Lucy

Thanks for your note and kind words.

It is an advantage having surgery in the summer so no colds and flu

to worry about. I look forward to seeing you and Holly again in

September for a good natter. Holly should be back to her normal self

the day after surgery. It is amazing how well they recover.

Take care

Hi ,

Thank you for sharing Kirsten's photos. WHOA!!! I'm totally blown away! She

looks

wonderful. Like Lucy, my mental image of Kirsten is still that cute little girl

I met in

London. Sorry to be an echo but wow, she looks great and all grown up!! I'm so

happy for

you and Kirsten.

We have Mederma here in Singapore, saw it before. I'll be happy to mail you a

tube if you

like. It'll be our pressie for Kirsten for being such a champion. Just let me

know if you'll

like me to mail it. The instructions on the box says not to apply on broken

skin. So may be

good that you don't do it right now anyway. The antibiotic cream you are

currrently using

will help reduce risk of scarring due to possible infection (at least that's

what I

understand).

We are still waiting for Naomi to grow taller! Becasue the tapes are serving

their pupose Mr

and our doctor here are advising us to wait...She's happy though, her

friends and

teachers at school are great. Like Kirsten, she's also grown 'up' (not so much

UPwards -

darn it). I'll get Ern to post one of her latest photos, maybe the one that won

her the prize,

ha!ha!

Take care now and hugs to all at home.

Hi ,

I just saw Kirstens pics. My daughter is 4 years old, we live in

Germany and we are thinking about having R. Collin performing surgery

on her.

Could you please explain to me, what Collin exactly did? What kind of

surgery technique? Levator resection or Brow Suspension (Sling

procedure)?

Which surgery did he do first? The pictures look as if he did the

Ptosis first and the Epicanthus after. This is unusual.

Thanks for your reply,

Anja

Hi Anja

Mr Collin did a frontalis sling (lid lift) first as Kirsten's vision

was being affected. Her right eye was becoming weaker than the left,

but she was lucky never to have a squint. She had the lid lift at 2

yrs and 4 months of age. He used a suture material (I don't know

exactly what) and not fascia from her leg. I don't think he used

silicone either. The plan is to repeat the lid lift once she is 4

years old and at least 6 months after the canthoplasty, using fascia

from her leg.

One thing he did say to me was that it was not a good idea to do

both procedures at once as each operation pulls the eye in a

different direction. The lid lift pulls it up and the canthoplasty

will pull the eye inwards, so to get a good result he feels they

should be done at 2 different times.

It is my understanding that the canthoplasty is usually done first

if the pupil is not obstructed and vision is developing normally,

but if the pupil is even partly obstructed then to allow vision to

develop, the lid lift will be done first.

Surgery for BPES is fairly individualised even though the principles

remain the same. Best of luck for your daughter's surgery.

Regards

P

Hi ,

thanks for your reply.

I have some more questions, if you don´t mind.

Did Mr. Collin do anything about the lidfold? Did he do a cut to

reconstruct the fold? Do you know what I mean? Usually children with

BPES dont´t have a lidfold before surgery. And the pictures I saw

from german surgeons ... the kids did not have lidfolds after the

brow suspension either ....And Kirstens lidfold looks great now!!!

How was the hospital stay? How was the staff??? How long had Kirsten

to stay in hospital? How long was the recovery period before she was

able to go to school again?

Did NHS take over the surgery costs? Or did you pay by yourselfes?

Thanks so much for your reply,

Regards, Anja
