Guest guest
hi stacey! welcome to the group! i know that it is hard to start.... you are just going to have to force yourself to do it at first. you have to make the decision... make the commitment... and just do it. it is mind over matter. once you get going you will feel good and will want to keep doing it and it will be easier to get motivated, so hang in there. also, make it easy for yourself to workout... definitely make a plan!!! think about what you want to accomplish this week and write your workouts on your calendar. make an appointment with yourself each day, and just like you would honor an appointment with a doctor or dentist, keep these appointments with yourself. ::everyone together now:: JUST DO IT! :*carolyn. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Guest guest
hi stacey and welcome to the group. you should make a schedule that works for YOU. it helps with a schedule b/c its like you have an appointment with yourself to exercise. many of us try to get it in first thing in the morning, some do it after work, etc.from the looks of it you could break down your workouts with cardio or strength in the morning and more strength/toning and pilates or yoga in the night. that way your day is free to be with your kids. sounds like you have a good variety of workouts. but just speaking from experience, depending on what cathe tape you have its not a good thing for beginners. but it seems you have a good variety of instructors. hopefully its a variety of workouts (i.e. cardio, weights, toning, pilates) you find it keep your body guessing and you won't get bored. welcome to the group again kassia
Guest guest
Hi, Stacey and welcome--from one of the token males in this group. :-P Not only is it important to schedule your workouts but it's also important to view them as necessities. Just think of food or sleep. Would you go without either of those? Not willingly, because you need them. Put exercise in the same category as eating and sleeping, and you'll get over the guilt of taking time to do something that's good for you. This might help you avoid the " I just don't have time " excuse. Best wishes,

I hope you and your family are well and had a happy Novruz with the Tblisi weather getting warmer for you all. How was the course in Baku and did Prant get you a nice place to stay? The boat is now in the North Sea, we had a very good transit from Mauritania with 5 busy days in Rotterdam. I very much enjoyed working with you and everyone on the boat sends their best regards to you. You will enjoy this very friendly site and learn some interesting and not so interesting things. It will be very pleasant to work with you again sometime, take care. Regards . Sukhitashvili <cnori555@...> wrote: Hi Everybody, My name is Sukhitashvili. Some people call me Gia. I am from Georgia. Guest guest
Thank You June! Let me know what the good Congressman has to say, please! Kirby www.evidenceofharm.com Introduction I'm so glad this list was formed. Thanks Lenny, and a big Thank You to Kirby for writing Evidence of Harm. I have an eight year old granddaughter, , who is autistic. She was dx'd when she was three and since then, I have been involved with finding out about treatments that have helped others, and also trying to help by contacting elected officials and urging them to support specific bills for funding research and services for these children. Today my daughter and I met with our Congressman, Tim Bishop, to urge him to support HR 1297 and HR 881. He assured us he will be signing onto both bills and will also push for more Federal funding of Autism Research. I think our meeting went well. I presented Congressman Bishop with a photo of and Kirby's book, Evidence of Harm. I want him to remember us and the many families who struggle with autism every day. He listened to what we had to say and I think he really cares. He also told us that Autism is a very hot subject right now in Washington, so to those who are thinking about contacting your congressman, why not call and try to arrange an appointment and surprise him/her with their very own copy of Evidence of Harm! Guest guest
> I was so terrified and > elated all at the same time - does that make sense? Hi Gwen, and welcome. I understand exactly what you mean by that. > Are there classes where we can > learn how to do these things? There ought to be, in my opinion. I've even contemplated organizing a class at the Wedge or someplace similar with cooking facilities, but that's a huge job that I don't have energy for right now. I think most of us have taught ourselves from Nourishing Traditions, and just muddled along as best as we can, but groups like these are a blessing. My advice is to take things slowly. If you try to do too much, you may become overwhelmed and give up. Start with basics of raw dairy, and work your way into lacto-fermenting, and learn as you go. I don't think one needs to be filthy rich to eat well. If you can make stocks and broths, you can really stretch a good cut of meat by adding veggies and so on. If you can learn to do canning, as I intend to with summer's produce, more power to you! ) Reminder: our next swap is scheduled for Saturday August 6th, 2005. Location to be announced! ~Joe

Another way to start might be learning how to cook w/out using boxes and cans of pre-processed stuff. Where do you live? I assume not to far from the U? Guest guest
Thanks , Yes, we do live near the U. I was actually looking at the dates for that country swap and think that I might try to work it into our schedule. I'm also thinking about going to the Homeopathic Class at MVV Farm on the 18th, since that is also something I would like to get to know more about. Thankfully, being that my husband is a grad student and I am a SAHM, we can't afford the boxes and cans and so have been making almost everything from scratch for the last couple of years. But, pre that financial revelation, I shudder at our diet! I don't know if you know the Saint Park area at all (or any of the rest of you) and could recommend a good source for local free range eggs and raw milk? (although we definitely plan on making a family trip out to MVV Farms in the near future and I am really excited about it) Thanks for any help you can give. Guest guest
Welcome, Sharon! > The last few months I've gained more, and I'm > feeling terrible. I'm short of breath unless I walk slow and not for First thing - take baby steps back to fitness. Get into an exercise routine. There are plenty of videos out there for people who are at the bottom rung of the fitness ladder, like Chair Dancing, Bliss or videos for the disabled, or even more gentle stuff like slow walking, tai chi or yoga. Start slow and increase the time a little more each week. If you can only walk 5 minutes away from home and 5 minutes back, so be it. Do that 3-5 times a week and the next week aim for either more days or more time - 10 minutes instead of 5 each way. Do some strength training with light weights - your library should be able to get any of the Strong Women Stay ____ (Slim, Young, Strong - there are a number of them) books, or Cruise's 8 Minutes in the Morning for Real Shapes, or even A Morning Cup of Strength Training and do as much as you can 2 or 3 times a week. > I also don't know where to > start, what diet would be best. Start by keeping a journal. Our Links section has a link to a blank journal page you can use as an example - just print out a few and see if it's for you. If not, make up one of your own, or just write in a marble homework pad or a text file on your computer. Mark down everything you eat or drink, when you take it, why (Hunger or boredom or frustration or " just because " ) and then how you felt *after* you ate it. Do this for 2 weeks or more and you'll see patterns emerging. If you do a lot of snacking on empty calories at certain times, plan on buying some healthier snacks to eat then. Little changes like that. There were 2 messages I posted earlier today from the American Heart Association, one announcing their new book which advocated making small changes - eating only 25% less than you are now - and the other one was a list of small changes to make, like eating raisins instead of cookies, diet soda instead of full sugar, etc. Do these little things to start. Switch from white flour products to whole grain because the added fiber fills you up faster and they're a bit healthier. Eat more green & yellow veggies and less meat & starches on your dinner plate. Have some soup and salad with every dinner before the entree to fill you up more on lower calorie foods first. Drink more water - we're big people and need more fluids than a normal sized one. Aim for a half ounce per pound of body weight, but start with just an extra glass or 2 each day and work your way up. Remember to drink more when you're hot and sweaty, too. If you wait until you're thirsty, you're already a bit dehydrated. As your fitness level increases, as you add more muscle, even these little changes will make you healthier. As you're able to do more exercise, you'll increase your metabolism, burn off more calories without making any more dietary changes, and lose a few pounds. Remember, you're not going to lose 100 pounds any time soon. A fast weight loss on a fad diet usually means, in 98% of the cases, fast regain. Your goal will be only 1 to 2 pounds a week with a few weeks with no loss now and then as your body readjusts itself. As all the commercials for various diet products say, you have to change your lifestyle, not go on another temporary diet. Right now, you're goal is to improve your fitness level for better health. Have patience, and weight loss will eventually follow. Sue in NJ
Guest guest
Hi Sharon, Welcome! I too have needed to lose weight for a long time. When I began I could not walk the driveway without huffing and puffing. I put a chair in a strategic location (felt stupid sometimes too, but did it anyway) and walked the driveway. When I could do it without the chair 5 times I moved to walking a bit further: half a block. That meant I walked a whole block (half there half back). By then I was able to join the YMCA and that opened new horizons. I walk the pool for an hour and that really got me going. I can now walk on a treadmill for half an hour at a time. I also use the weight room. But it all started with walking the driveway and beginning slow and keeping steady at it. take care, cb "S.K. S.G." <whimsicalscribe@...> wrote: Hi. My name is Sharon.
