Doug,

My thoughts would be food allergies. I don't give my son any Garden

of Life products. As good as they are,(I use Primal Defense), they

use a coating on them that is corn based. He has corn allergies.

When he is exposed to corn he has the exact symptoms that you listed,

plus irritability.

If it isn't food allergy/sensitivity, I am not sure what it could be.

Hope it resolves soon,

Hi , we've used Ther-biotic complete from Klaire for a few years

now and it works really well for us, but at the beginning we did see

some " die-off " . When you said " he tested high on yeast " was it an OAT?

or a faeces test? If it was just in the urine and you also have high

oxalic or hippuric, maybe you're looking at an oxalate problem.

There's another ! group called trying low oxalate that explains

that many of the " yeasty " issues in autism may be in fact due to excess

oxalate rather than yeast. The group is a bit technical ( Owens

the group owner likes to support all she posts with studies out of

pubmed) but definitely worth the read. You'd maybe like to look into

it.

Thanks, Mandi. We already use sacch boulardii and it has really

helped with yeast or whatever. So have ordered some of the Custom

Probiotics 1 - Nutricentre stock that too. It is in capsules and says

for 'Adult Use'- is that the right one?

Also thinking about trying Paragone for Kids to follow up the

paromomycin antibiotic against blastocystis hominis. But do you

reckon it's better to test first to see if necessary? he was fine

when taking the antibiotics, but since then has had 'gut issues'

either because Klaire's probiotics we just started wasn't agreeing

with him - or I don't know what!

have a good christmas!

I'm not impressed with Paragone for Kids. You're supposed to give it twice

a day on an empty stomach and 30 mins before taking any food. Hey, am I

missing something here? Imagine trying to explain to a starving child who

wants his breakfast that he'll have to wait 30 mins before breaky because

his stomach is empty and he has to take this foul disgusting stuff first.

Try finding another time during the day when his stomach is empty and you

need to give the second dose. Does nystatin work like this?

Not the same thing really but we give pro biotics first thing in the

morning before Tom's fully even awake with a glass of water. Then

we give them very last thing at night. So both times his tummy is

empty. A.m. - can't claim it's 30 mins before breakie but with the

glass of water and then SCD type breakfast about 20 mins later

(Cbeebies is a great deterrent), we're just about OK. FWIW!

Hi,

I'm in a similar situation. Do you have any further details about

this pro-biotic?

Thanks,

I went to take a look at this but it's not that remarkable, and it has

fillers that we could be allergic to.

I recommend harry's customprobiotics.com

I realize from my initial research that I was getting the cheaper

acidophilus from him, not the strain that is strongest and best

researched.

His stuff seems much more expensive and it is except its pure. Just

probiotics and no fillers. So you can take minimal amounts.

I didn't have increased pain but definitely increased BM's. I overdid it --

some strains are

stronger than others -- and once I cut back, it's been better.

Where is the pain, and what brand/form of probiotics are you taking?

Hi,

I rotate 3 different brands, Metagenics with Organika and Webber Naturals - all

3 are dairy free. I am in pain all the time anyway but the acidophilus increases

it noticeably. The muscles tighten, stiffen and I experience increase crunching

- extremely painful - most notably in the neck, shoulders and back. I'm on 3

different antibiotics right now and experiencing some yeast issues so taking the

acidophilus is a necessity currently.

I have a print out suggesting that acidophilus increases lactic acid and I don't

know if this is the source of my problem but my doctor disputes that

information. I have just taken some molybdenum hoping it will bring some relief.

Any other suggestions or information appreciated. Thanks.

I use probiotics with my kids daily - it's part of their daily vitamins.

Yes, I'd back off soy too. Soy and casein (dairy protein) are very similar

in molecular structure so if you have a problem with dairy, good chance you

could have a problem with soy too.

Many others will respond about the vaccinations, but on the allergy issue,

try taking soy and corn (including high fructose corn syrup – which is in

everything processed) out. My daughter was so sensitive to HFCS that she

would spit everything up if I at it. Also things like corn oil which would

come disguised as fried food or salad dressing on the occasion where we

would eat out, would also send her spitting.

Hope that helps.

Hi stacey!

my homeopath gave me some baby bifidus (she called it)... I think it

was called neo-nate probiotic or something similar. My daughter was

7 months when the homeopath prescribed it as a routine kind of

thing. I give it to her here and there, not regularly, so maybe

that makes a difference.

I feel that the risks associated with vaccines are greater than

those associated with the diseases themselves, at least in this day

and age, with the situation we're in now (no daycare, stay at home

dad/mom, healthy parents, good naturopathic support). So I've never

regretted not vaxing, and have several friends who have also not

vaxed their kids and have come through things like measles, whooping

cough, and chicken pox with no ill effects.

Also, with diseases like HiB, there's something called serotype

replacement, which has made the incidence of other strains of the

disease (that are NOT covered by the vaccine) more common. So

vaxing for HiB will not protect from all strains of HiB, and may

make you more prone to the other strains.

We can only make the most informed decisions we know how, and then

leave the rest up to divine providence! Just think of all those

parents who vaccinated their kids and then the children still got

the diseases...or the parents who did not vaccinate and their

children also got the disease and suffered ill effects - you can

never know what's going to happen, and only make the best decision

you know how.

Hi,

This is probably as good an explanation as any: http://en.wikipedia

org/wiki/Probiotic. When I started training in aromatherapy, my tutor told

us that it is believed that around 75% of the general population may have a

problem with overgrowth of candida albicans in the gut, mostly because of

the sugary diets we eat, the antibiotics we chuck down our throats and the

stress levels we live with. I don't think it's an unreasonable estimate.

Breastfed babies do not generally need supplementation with probiotics

because breastmilk is rich in the factors that promote good growth of

friendly bacteria in the gut. Good levels are believed to protect against

gut damage from foreign proteins and many people swear by them in protecting

against food allergies, or healing damage from allergies. Many people use

them because they firmly believe that they promote good gut health, and that

good gut health will help ensure a healthy body. I would agree with that

personally. A lot of people also use prebiotics - they're more of a recent

innovation in the supplement market, and you can find out more here:

Hi Stacey --

Reflux in a 6 month old generally responds quite well to Pre and Probiotics,

but I'd watch your diet as well, since you're breastfeeding. Wheat, soy,

dairy and gluten are the main culprits, but your DD can be reacting to

something like tomatoes or even cucumbers that you're eating. An

elimination diet will help with this.

As for Probiotics, I've never read anything negative about them (it's the

good bacteria like acidophilus and bifidus, that's normally found in the

intestines). I'd be much more concerned about purchasing a good brand of

Probiotics as supplements are unregulated and contamination is always a

concern.

Hi Stacey,

Is anyone using pro biotics with their children? I have been concerned

Over my baby girls immune system (reflux, possible food allergies) and

I have NOT vaccinated her. She's almost 6 months. I am terrified to

Vaccinate and terrified not to vaccinate. I read something about

Having to be careful with probiotics and the liver?? Anyone?

***Apologies for late reply - I'm very behind on my mail. I have never

heard of probiotics bothering the liver before - the bacteria used in the

culture are all gut bacteria afaik, and normally thrive only in this

environment. Bacteria in the liver would probably be killed or neutralised

there.

I am sorry to hear that your baby has reflux problems - this must be a

difficult thing to deal with, especially as a new mum. I do believe you

are wise not to vaccinate her though. That could certainly adversely affect

an already difficult situation. You say she is breastfed - is this

exclusive - no other food/drink at all? Do you or your partner have food

allergy issues? They are often more common in babies whose parents also

suffer from food allergies. As has said, gluten, soy, dairy and wheat

are the most common triggers but it really can be anything that you are

eating. An elimination diet is tough but may help considerably.

I give her the powder form in her reflux medication delivered through

A syringe. I am backing way off of her medication and trying to

Disover more of what's bothering her system. She is breastfed and I am

Not on dairy or wheat. I am thinking soy is an issue. So, back off soy.

***If you mean that you are giving probiotics in her reflux medication, then

you may well find that they are being killed/neutralised in the stomach.

The hydrochloric acid secreted by the stomach glands is designed to kill

bacteria and it can effectively render probiotics useless in some people.

The supplement I used to use contained its cultures in a buffered capsule to

make sure they reached the gut without being destroyed in the stomach.

Something to think about here perhaps?

In the mean time, I am so scared for her to be around people or kids.

I am so worried she will catch something that would kill her.

***Just because she has reflux problems doesn't necessarily mean she has a

compromised immune system. If she is breastfed exclusively, she will be

receiving protective factors in the milk that will help line the wall of the

gut and make it strong, giving protection against many *bugs*. Breastmilk

will also help maintain the integrity of her mucous membranes, protecting

her against airborne *bugs*. Not vaccinating her will help maintain this

protected state, but breastfeeding and not vaccinating are no guarantee that

she will never get ill - babies do get sick, however healthy they are. She

needs challenges to her immune system to develop it and make it functional,

so don't fall into the trap of avoiding everyone out of fear.

I know I sound paranoid...well, because I am. She's my first baby and

I want to do everything I can to protect her. And oddly enough my

Parents said...vaccinate to protect. I said that's interesting because

I believe that it's possible vaccinating her leaves her OPEN to a

Compromised immune system..

***Oh I do understand. My dd is now 10 and I have probably been equally

paranoid about her. But she was breastfed and is unvaccinated, and although

she gets bugs now and again, and she has some *stuff* that her homeopath is

dealing with, she is largely very fit and healthy. There is no reason why

your girl won't be the same in 10 years' time!! :o) The worrying? - it's

called " motherhood " and it comes as standard the moment you give birth. And

no, it doesn't get any better!! LOL!

One thing I did wonder about your babe. Have you taken her to see a cranial

osteopath at all? I'm not sure what they are called in the US, but in the

UK they are called cranial osteopaths and they do marvellous work with

babies who have problems such as yours does. Have a look at www.cranial.org

uk and see if you think there is something comparable in the US - could be a

craniosacral therapist? But they are very effective for problems of this

nature. It could be that your daughter needs some osteopathic adjustment of

her skull. Given that " structure governs function " , if the structure isn't

quite right, it could well be affecting her digestive system. If you had a

particularly traumatic birth, or a long - or very short - labour, then this

may well be a factor in her condition.

HTH.

Love, light and peace,

Hi, my baby had really bad reflux month 2 and 3, so bad that his

episodes looked like seizures and he slept with an apnea monitor the

whole time. It is a terrifying thing, I even thought with one

episode that he was going to die cause he actually stopped breathing,

the scarriest day of my life. These episodes were at a time that I

was breastfeeding as much as I could and supplementing with powder

formula. At 3 months I started making homeade raw milk formula and

his reflux decreased so much. Since then he has only had maybe 3 or

4 milder reflux attacks, and hasn't had any for several months. He

still spits up, but I guess that is normal. The formula I make

contains whey and a probiotic, the one I use is Natren Life Start

Infant Bifidum. I hope this helps you.

I recommend Culturelle all the time. Its carried at most CVS pharmacies and has the populations in the billions. I haven't used it yet for bacteria overgrowth but assume it could be beneficial.

Is anyone recommending probiotics to help in the treatment of bacterial overgrowth in RNY pts? If so, what brand and how much. Is anyone using the brand Culturelle in their acute care setting? We use Lactinex however if really falls short in 'live cells' compared to Culturelle.

Is anyone recommending probiotics to help in the

treatment of bacterial overgrowth in RNY pts? If so, what brand

and how much. Is anyone using the brand Culturelle in their acute care

setting? We use Lactinex however if really falls short in 'live cells'

compared to Culturelle.

Thank you,

There is research out there supporting the use of probiotics in SBBO; however, i'm of the opinion that if someone has this condition then even good bacteria (probiotics) will grow where they shoudn't and worsen the condition. I've seen it happen.

I think the 1st line of therapy should be a nonabsorbable antiobiotic called rifaximin
