Hi. I'm just butting in here to talk about sleep apnea. I've got it. Went

through a sleep study that showed " malignant v-tach episodes " during sleep

when I stop breathing for short periods. The solution was a continuous

positive airway pressure (CPAP) mask. It fits over the nose and is attached

to an air pump. The sleep study will determine if you need one and what is

the optimum air pressure to stop the apnea. If you do go the CPAP route, be

sure to insist on a heated humidifier also. Otherwise, the CPAP will dry

out your air passages and sinuses and cause some pain and even an allergic

symptom during the day.

Turk,

Yes, sleep apnea can be dangerous. It also contributes to

arrhythmias. If you're experiencing sleep apnea, ask your primary

care physician for a referral to a sleep disorders clinic where they can

do a real-time evaluation of your condition. You'll spend the night at

the clinic hooked up to various monitoring machines and the techs will

record apneas and what it they are doing to your heart rate.

Hi Guys;

I was diagnosed with Sleep Apnea in December - it took 3 months to fight the

insurance for the CPAP machine.... My oxygen saturation level would drop to

91% - meaning " minimal " sleep apnea. But my Doctors were concerned because

of the heart condition! They fought with the insurance and I got the CPAP

machine. Sleep Apnea is hard on the heart because of the gasping and

sputtering, and not breathing... My study showed that I stopped breathing 3

times per minute, sometimes at 19 seconds each time.... Glad I have my

backup! Sleep Apnea is very common in heart patients. I now sleep with a

forced air machine which makes it impossible to snore. The forced air is

wonderful and I sleep well and feel refreshed all day - no need for naps or

feeling tired during the day. I love it - it is the masks that need help!

They are hard to get use to, I use two different ones and change off.

Well good luck with your Sleep Apnea problems, and if you suspect sleep apnea

- ge it checked out! I had the study done in my home - I think it was better

for me.

I am moving to Long Beach in two days. Have been living in Fullerton, in

Orange County. I hear that Long Beach has many more fog and marine

overcast days than cities more inland. Must be somewhat like the East Bay.

I'll be moving close to the Veterans Administration Hospital where I can,

hopefully, get my cardiac meds cheaper.

though? It is very confusing to me. He also sleeps later than usual in the

a.m., believe it or not....and we're having a hard time getting him up in

time for the bus at 7:15!! This coming from a kid who USED to wake up at the

crack of dawn each day no matter what time he fell asleep the night before!

The stopped breathing is what bothers me most, even though it's just a few

seconds, but it stops none the less. A friend of ours has been hounding me

to have checked for celiac. I' ve asked three doctors who haven't

tested for it, and they've all said the likelihood is no, because he

would have big belly, have constant diarrhea, stomach upset, etc., etc. Who

knows?

That sleep study sounds interesting though. If he does have apnea, what do

they do after that? I mean, do they find prob's with adenoids, ears or do th

ey give med's again????

Maddie used to do this too . Actually, once I counted up to 18

seconds!!!!!!! I was So SURE they'd find apnea during her sleep study, but

nope. She also sleeps folded over like a napkin (not every night).

I am so surprised they didn't find sleep apnea in your daughter. I am

starting to wonder if this sleep study Noelle is up for in late Dec. is

going to be catastrophic. Your description of her looking like a mummy w/

all the wires is making me very nervous. Do you think they didn't have a

finding of apnea because Maddie didn't sleep well w/ all the wires attached?

on some of nathan's early reports from when he was

3yrs or soo, they kept saying he was fine didnt detect

any apnea, but if you read the report, they did, but

it wasnt enough to worry about i guess, they must go

by guidelines, cause theyre would be times we could

count 30-60sec before he would all of a sudden take a

breath. But when they did say he had significant

periods of apnea, whe he was older he got put on cpap,

i remember his dr's letter stating 15.9 periods of

this blah blah apnea per hour and 9.6 periods of this

kind of apnea per hour etc, so they have different

kinds too. And luckily his O2 levels havent gone below

90% . If the person is having horrible time even

during testing they will NOT hesitate to put

appropriate devices on during sleep study. Untreated

sleep apnea leads to many problems, lack of sleep,

worsened health, behavior problems, lack of energy

during day, or hyper if child, high blood pressure,

and even cardiac arrest. shawna.

wow, this is getting REAL interesting. I've read over and over, over

the yrs., about how sleep apnea can

lead to major heart problems. Rich has it too. He alternates between

extremely loud snoring, and the apnea.

Oddly, i sleep soundly when he's snoring loudly. But when he stops

breathing, i wake up and become alert.

Last yr. when he was in the hospital(s) for a week, i kept bringing up

the apnea thing. No one listened.

I have a question, suppose apnea is causing the heart problem and when you

cure apnea does the heart problem go away?(you cant stop hoping you

know!....) :). TURK

Yes, I agree with . I have been on CPAP for a year now and I

won't leave home without it! I am headed to Washington DC with 24

7/8th graders and chaperones and I have my CPAP packed in my checked luggage!

The masks were very hard to get use to. Yes I had to learn to breath

through my nose because it was always stopped up and couln't before.

But the CPAP took my breath away when I would sleep with my mouth opened,

so I learned very quickly to sleep with it closed. Now I sometimes

even nap with it!!!

It will be your best friend if you just keep trying to get use to it!

~guin

P.S. The only disadvantage is that I feel like I am "locking"

my husband out each time I put on the mask and turn on the machine....

But even that would not stop me from using it!

Nice try Turk.............the odds are that it won't......you'll be lucky if it didn't do some kind of permanent damage to the heart. (minor) On the other hand weight loss might help cure them both if that is an issue for you.

Talk about not leaving home without it............In the days when we still tent camped I used to take mine with us and would request the site nearest the bathroom.....looked pretty funny with a 2-300ft extension cord running along the dirt and the sound of white noise coming from in the tent. I'm sure it kept the bears and racoons away!!!

Hi Turk,

I am responding to two emails at once....

Regarding the CPAP: It is a machine with a headpiece that fits over your nose. It uses a constant flow of air pressure to keep your breathing passages open.....since them closing is what is cutting off your airflow.

Yes, next time you are in SF let me know and we'd love to meet you.

Hello ;Yes I am in San Fransisco, you're right yesterday was a wonderful day so is today. I'll be here until monday the 15th then i am planning to fly back. Thanks again for the info and next time i come i would love to see you and your family. Regards TURK

Hi ;

Thanks for the info. Question since it gives you constant airflow doesnt

that dry your air passages because in the hospital when they put that oxygen

thing i remember having my nostrils and mouth dry allthe time. I promise

when i come to san fran next time you'll be the first people i look for and

well meet. in a short time i got to like you very much. Regards to the
