Hi hurtknees and welcome!

Thanks for all

the info

It's pretty hard to think of ways of

smoothing the patellar cartilage without surgery! I haven't

heard of anything. There's a couple of injectables

around though, I think they are called synvisc and

hyaluron (or hyalauronic acid or something like that).

These are thick lubricants which are injected into the

knee joint and help to lubricate and support it.

Varying degrees of success reported, ranging from no

effect other than swelling to reasonable pain relief.

Hyaluron is supposed to be better and actually helps the

cartilage in some way but requires 5 injections as opposed

to the 3 injections required for synvisc. Results

last about 6 months. Mind you if you've read " Dr Theo "

you'll already know this!! His

site:

http://www.drtheo.com/

I think Dr Theo himself commented

that there is

little difference between taking 3 separate daily

glucosamine/chondro doses or taking the lot in one big dose. But I

take it three times a day because I think it has to be

better absorbed like this! Personally I'd stick with 3

times a day...

I have no experience of edema so

can't suggest anything.

I do believe that

moderate excercise is good, but there is a fine line

between moderate and over-excercise. The general opinion

in this group is that straight leg quad excercises

are very good (except Katmeow's physio said they

weren't really appropriate in her case).

Good luck

hurtknees and keep posting!

Lot's of questions and I hate to beat a dead

horse but did you find out why your knees
started

hurting? I mean why did your knees start hurting when they

did?

For the edema, which if I'm not correct, is sign with

the beginning of arthritis. Try using some the new

ANSAIDs like Celebrex which will thin out the fluid and

hopefully relieve some pressure.

Exercise often as

you can and ice afterwards with hamstring stretches

(lasting at least 1 min) before. This would bring some

nourishment to your knees as this the way the cartilage

actually " regenerates " though the compression of the

joints with the fluid providing the nutrients. Find

something that doesn't hurt and do it every day. There's

nothing better for your knees, in my opinion.

To

also address a method which smoothes out the

cartilage. I was aware of an arthoscopic device, Coblation,

which uses high frequency radio waves that supposedly
does an amazing job which doesn't compare to today's

laser. But I was recently forwarded a study which may

debunk this method because after time the surrounding

cartilage tissue begin to die off.

Most important

find out why your knees started hurting.

Hello and welcome!

Whenever my knees start

to feel hot or swell, I use ice packs or even a bag

of frozen corn. Put a cloth between your skin and

the ice, then wrap loosely with an ace bandage. Leave

on for about 20 minutes, and try to elevate your

knee higher than chest level. If your knee gets numb

or the skin gets red, that is too long to

ice!

Do that two or three times a day. Also remember that

when your knee swells, your brain cuts off the signal

to the VMO, the inner thigh muscle that is crucial

to keep the kneecap in alignment. (this is what my

very good physical therapist told me.) So do straight

leg quad exercises to keep the brain aware of that

muscle!! Look for my previous posts for exercises. Good

luck!

Jeannine.

Dear Jeannine:

Thanks for your reply. I

had been able to do without the 'ice therapy' for

over 2 years. However, now I am back to doing what you

described after every hard workout, sometimes as a

preventative measure. There are some great products made by

companies such as Body Glove which incorporate a neoprene

wrap and gel bag in one. I find they fit much better

and are more effective than other methods, mainly

because the gel bag will gradually warm up and therefore

not allow the skin to freeze for as long - sort of

'idiot-proof' and good for people like me who mistakenly

believe 'more is better'.

Thanks for the info on

the edema and VMO muscle. I hadn't ever been told

that.

Thanks,
HurtKnees

BFL is easy once you get the hang of it. Planning your meals and workouts ahead

of time really helps. Let us know if you have any questions.

Hello All!

I'm just starting the program tomorrow. Is it tough to follow?

Welcome from PA. I am from NH. I have two young girls to. 8 and 3 yrs old. You have found a great place for info and support. Alot of us are restarting our efforts in the lifestyle change that it takes to be healthy. I am not diebetic BUT try to be good because both of my parents are. Losing 35 pounds already is a great start for you. Dont forget portions, water, and exercise are key.

April what a wonderful Xmas gift your getting...a flat tummy and

perky tata's! I am guessing that a plastic surgeon is going to do

the procedures since it involves a lift. But it started me to

wondering...Does Dr. Simpson do tucks for his wls patients? Just

curious.
