Guest guest
I do know that a sore throat is one of the symptoms of too much iodine. After I had been on it awhile, I began to get a sore throat and found out it was overdose. The most I can tolerate now is 20 mg, I figure I have enough if my body tells me it's an overdose. That may be what's happening for you.ArielOn Thu, May 19, 2011 at 1:14 PM, rare_earth_mom <kastringer@...> wrote: I've been on iodoral for a month, up to 37.5 mg/day. Guest guest
Umm ... terminology correction ... it is not an " overdose " ... it may be an amount that causes you to have greater bromide detox symptoms than you find tolerable ... but that is not the same as an overdose. Technically you cannot overdose on iodine ... you simply excrete any excess in your urine. Sore throat - and several other thyroid/throat related symptoms are consistent with bromide detox. Please consider salt loading. Read the new member documents if you haven't yet. Read them again if it has been awhile. Really great info in there. The breast cancer web site has a nice listing of the bromide detox symptoms. I don't want to go hunting for it from work though. Maybe someone else can post it. Guest guest
Are you taking the companion nutrients ( vitamin C, selenium, magnesium, unrefined Celtic Sea Salt) , these are very important to help the body get rid of toxic halides ( chlorine, fluoride, bromide) that the iodine displaces. Make sure you are also drinking plenty of clean water.Kathleen Why does my throat hurt? I've been on iodoral for a month, up to 37.5 mg/day. But ever since I have started I get sharp pains in my thryoid area, and it moves up my neck. Today it feels like a strep throat is starting. Is this normal? Guest guest
Yes, I understand about overdose and that you can't do that unless you drink a gallon of it. But some of us do reach a point where it's too much iodine and our bodies don't like it. I am glad you brought up that you can't OD on it unless you drink an ocean of it, since most folks don't know that. Wish the folks who set the MDR of it knew that. Guest guest
It's not that the body doesn’t 'like it'. It's that the iodine is helping the body detox the toxic halides, and that’s where the salt comes in handy. If one salt loads, it helps the process move along more smoothly. I take 100 mg of Iodoral daily, along with the companion nutrients and have no problems. The body needs iodine in every part and what it doesn’t need, is washed out in the urine. The word 'overdoes' is not a correct term for what happens when the body has trouble moving out the toxins. Let's be careful what terms we use for detox. Thanks. Kathleen Re: Why does my throat hurt? Guest guest
I've already detoxed, I've been on iodine since last Oct.. I went up to 130 mg for months, and detoxed already so then lowered it. i tried it at 130 mg again, and got a sore throat, shortness of breath and other symptoms of iodine overload. No you can't overdose, but you can have too much in your system. At least that's what I have found to be true for myself. Guest guest
I thought that if the iodine was taking up those receptors the halogens wouldn't have a place to stay and pass on through your body; I thought that was the reason for taking potassium iodide for impending radiation exposure. Guest guest
Those symptoms you got were not overload, they are detoxing. You don’t just detox once and are done, you can continue for long periods of time, or have periodic times of it happening. I suggest you read the new member documents again and especially the section about detoxing. I keep it on my computer and reread it about once a month, there is always more to understand. Guest guest
OK, I'm confused and I do want to understand this. I do understand the part that we're always detoxing. But as far as thesymptoms go, are you saying that we're never done with the symptoms? How do we know if it's symptoms and not too much iodine? Guest guest
Again, any iodine the body doesn’t need gets washed out in our urine. So if you get uncomfortable symptoms, that means you are needing help with detoxing the halides. Salt loading is the best for helping them move out less painfully from the body. When you cut down the iodine and symptoms cease, it does not mean you were taking too much iodine, it means your body was not able to handle the detoxing, and needed help, such as salt loading . I hope I am making this clear. Best, Kathleen Re: Why does my throat hurt? Yes, I understand about overdose and that you can't do that unless you drink a gallon of it. Guest guest
OK, I've been doing salt loading and taking salt since Jan. I was on 130 of Ki for about 3 or 4 months and then switched to Lugol's last jan or feb. Was on 40 to 60 mg of Lugol's for about 2 months and then went down to 20 because it seemed to me to be a reasonable amount and to be enough at that point. I've also been taking milk thistle and dandelion and drinking lots of water for 2 months - have done lots and lots of detoxes before so I know how to do that. Why would I be able to tolerate a high amount for months and then suddenly not tolerate the 20 mg? THis is confusing to me.thank you, ArielOn Thu, May 19, 2011 at 2:52 PM, Kathleen Blake <kathleenblake@...> wrote: Again, any iodine the body doesn’t need gets washed out in our urine. Guest guest
if it were me, I would think I was still detoxing. daily we are bombarded with so many toxins in our environment that we never get fully detoxified. Guest guest
Ariel,You only experience symptoms if you body is not clearing them out fast enough. For example, we have a kitchen garbage can. If we empty it daily to an outside container, it is smell free. However, if we leave it in the house for too many days, it starts to smell. Now taking it out every day does not mean we don’t have garbage, we do, we just get it out of the house before it smells. The same with detoxing. Detoxing probably goes on pretty constantly, but we want to do it without experiencing symptoms. But our body needs to get the junk out, and sometimes we have the healing crisis, you have to feel worse before you get better. We try to detoxify without experiencing symptoms. You only experience symptoms if you don’t get the garbage out fast enough. Your detox pathways need to be working well to clear the toxins out of your body – liver, colon, sweating, etc. You may need to support your liver and or do a liver cleanse to help get the toxins out better, along with the salt loading for immediate help. So, the goal is to keep detoxing with your detox pathways clear so that you don’t experience the symptoms. Hope that helps!Donna in IL Again, any iodine the body doesn’t need gets washed out in our urine. So if you get uncomfortable symptoms, that means you are needing help with detoxing the halides. Guest guest
O.k., I'll give it a try.For however long you've been alive, (up until the point you started taking iodine)you had inadequate dietary intake of iodine. Therefore, when you ingested or absorbed these toxic halides, they were able to 'key in' to the iodine receptors of your cells, not only in the Thyroid, but in the breasts, ovaries, and other places where iodine is used. They 'key in' to the receptor and have no biologic activity, but they block the receptor so when iodine comes along, it can't get in. Now, you start taking iodine. If you take it in a high enough dose, it 'pushes' the toxic halide out of the way, and then the iodine can get into the cell. This then leaves this toxic halide floating around in your blood stream, where it can get grabbed up by the liver, and or the kidneys, and eliminated. But, while its floating around, it can wreak a little havoc on the way. This havoc is the 'side effects' (not 'symptoms') of detox. If you just start out at a high dose of iodine, you push out a lot of halides all at once, and the detox side effects are too severe to tolerate. So, you want to manage these side effects, by gradually increasing your dose to where its high enough to push out, without being so high that it pushes out too much, all at once, and 'overwhelms' your detox pathways, making you feel like crap.Eventually you will push out all these accumulated toxic halides. However, you will continue to be exposed to, and absorb, SOME toxic halides on an ongoing basis. However, in a given day it will be much less than this lifetime accumulation you have built up. And, as you are continueing to take a high enough maintenance dose to keep these halides from being able to 'key in' to the receptors, they will be transported to the 'detox pathways' and gotten rid of. So, once you have gotten rid of the lifetime accumulation, yes, you will continue to 'detox', but shouldn't experience any side effects of detox. At least, thats MY understanding. Hope this helps,...Jim > > > > > > > > I've been on iodoral for a month, up to 37.5 mg/day. But ever since I have > > started I get sharp pains in my thryoid area, and it moves up my neck. Guest guest
well if we are never truly " done " detoxing, then it stands to reason there will be symptoms along the way too. sometimes better, sometimes worse ... depending on lots of factors I spend one to two days a week in a building I know is causing me problems. I can tell each day I am there how crappy I feel by the end of the day. But how do you measure and quantify that in a way to get anyone to do anything? And I need my job. So I do my best to keep above water. I keep thinking about getting some sort of person air filter thingy, they can just look at me like I'm batty - what do I care? I keep wondering how I am to make serious headway as long as I spend so much time in toxic places. It is a true challenge. Eat right, supplement smart, keep my home clear of bad stuff ... but then I walk out the door - and my control over these things erodes fast. So ... I keep doing what I can with supplements and controling what I can control. Also ... it has been mentioned more than once ... sometimes people feel poorly (ie detox symptoms that are uncomfortable) at lower doses and higher doses actually seem to work better - perhaps do a better job of pushing the bromides out? So Ariel it could be 130 mg was the optimal for you, and 40 or 50 is just enough to stir up the system but not enough to shift it - so you feel badly. 20 mg probably is too low and may just be getting passed through because it isn't enough to shift the bromides. Just a theory but I am betting it is probably right. Jaxi On Thu, May 19, 2011 at 1:48 PM, Ariel Monserrat <wolvenwood@...> wrote: OK, I'm confused and I do want to understand this. No you can't overdose, but you can have too much in your system. At least that's what I have found to be true for myself. The word 'overdoes' is not a correct term for what happens when the body has trouble moving out the toxins. Let's be careful what terms we use for detox. Thanks. Kathleen Re: Why does my throat hurt? Yes, I understand about overdose and that you can't do that unless you drink a gallon of it. But some of us do reach a point where it's too much iodine and our bodies don't like it. I am glad you brought up that you can't OD on it unless you drink an ocean of it, since most folks don't know that. Wish the folks who set the MDR of it knew that. Guest guest
It's not an overdose. It's a common sign of bromide toxicity - look at the list on www.breastcancerchoices.org . She has it listed as a symptom. We have not identified anything that signals "too much" iodine. It takes some people a lot to get to the detox point. That is probably where you hit. It took me until I hit 100 mgs before I had symptoms. Buist, ND Re: Why does my throat hurt? I do know that a sore throat is one of the symptoms of too much iodine. Guest guest
I have found that I can never say that "I have detoxed". There is always more to be pushed out. We are bombarded on all sides by halides and most of us don't have good elimination systems to keep up. If you are still dealing with health issues then you probably still have toxicity. Guest guest
Iodine does not sit on the receptors. The receptors are just that "receiving docs for iodine". We take iodine into the cells. We use iodine and then we supply more and they pass into the cells again. If you have bromides in your system you can easily block the receptors again. Buist, ND Re: Why does my throat hurt? Guest guest
You can be done with the symptoms when your elimination pathways are able to keep up with the toxins that are being released and those you are exposed to. When you have too much stored and are releasing too quickly and / or are being exposed to too much you will have symptoms. Buist, ND Re: Why does my throat hurt?
