I heard about this some time ago and was shocked and disappointed to hear

that he has sold out. So much for being our fearless leader. One million

babies a year die from formula companies pitching their wares in countries

without clean water to make the formulas and without money to buy the noxious

stuff. Too bad.

No I am not kidding. There are some people who cannot breastfeed for their reasons and to have the LLL want to pull their banner which may attract future or new parents to their organization to learn about BF and it's advantages over a silly formula banner is nuts. So a formula banner is there, big deal. They should keep in mind why they advertised on his web site to begin with and hope that parents turn to them for information and support. There are far worse crimes parents can commit than to formula feed.

I never said BF was silly, I said them pulling out due to a formula add was.

Then it was explained to me further and now I understand why they are pulling out.

All I know is one statistic regarding formula. My firstborn would have been dead should I have tried to continue to BF. She was starving and on the brink of dehydration. Within three days on formula she was gaining, thriving and happy. Most of all she was full. I am very glad there was formula for her. Not one sniffle until age 15 months. I could go on but I won't. Yes BF is best, but not in my case it wasn't. There is a lot more that goes into it for "most" moms. I am not going to wage the BF vs. formula war. Everyone has to do what is right for them. I was just confused about the uproar on the web site and now I am set straight.

I think he takes a reasonable stance, actually. I think it is far more

productive for child health advocates to promote the need for healthier

formula than to outright condemn it-, not because it is or ever will ever be

a good alternative to breastfeeding but because some people really CANT bf

and need to have alternatives (myself being one of these people).

these are interesting statistics--do you have the references for them? if so, pass them on, i'd like to use these figures, but would need to know where they are from...

The crimes parents choose to or have to commit against their children have

nothing to do with the fact that the formula companies now have yet another

place to promote their product - and the Sears are richer for it. Unfortunately,

mothers will fail to breastfeed (many without ever trying) with or without

the formula ad banners (plural, read: many) on this site. It really

comes down to ethics; do the Sears want to promote breasfeeding, or the

failure of breasfeeding. You really can't have it both ways, and the LLL

is wise to disassociate from them. It's hard to learn the benefits of breasfeeding

(I know this is incorrect terminology) when there are formula ads beckoning

you to "SALES" and GREAT DEALS". Every wants to "SAVE", maybe I'll just

buy a little to have on hand, just in case...

LLL has a policy about not being associated with anyone who takes money

from formula companies. The advertisements on Dr. Sears' site do not

meet the WHO codes for formula advertisements. They even go against Dr.

Sears' stance on advertising formula. It would one thing if he just said

in the bottlefeeding section that there is no need to pay the money for

big brands because the cheap stuff is just as good. But that is not what

is happening. He says right in his letter that he is in it for the

money. Plain and simple. He is Dr. Sears for goodness sakes. He sells

millions of books, everyone likes him, he could have gotten anyone to

advertise in those spots, but he chose the formula company. He chose

them over LLL (I am sure this was not a desicion made lightly on thier

part) They must have paid a fortune to get thier adds there. And Dr.

Sears was seduced by the money and sold out. End of story.

Please tell me where these stats came from so I can pass them on. They are

great. I don't know if any of you read the Mothering Magazine article a few

months back about formula called " Profits Before People " but it exposed the

formula companies, and their sitcom manipulating and influencing marketing

dept. as being just as evil and profit driven as the tobacco companies are.

Good article. Also, is this one of those discussions we should take to

another onelist before it goes on too much longer? It's a good one, but I

don't want to tick off anyone...

I think Dr. Sears makes several good points. Maybe he CAN reach more parents

that bottle feed, and help convince them to do otherwise. Not everyone can

be right about all things all the time...I believe that he is sincere in his

intentions, and think it is a shame that LLL is removing their link. Think

of all of the people that they will be missing the chance to reach and

educate, and the people who could use their help and knowledge that won't be

able to find their link there. Until I was pregnant and decided to

breastfeed, I never even heard of LLL. I'm sure there are other women out

there that haven't heard of them either, but will check out Dr. Sears site,

and miss the opportunity to find out about them...Sharon

There ARE some women who cannot breastfeed, and think they have no other alternative besides formula. If LLL were there to tell them differently, wouldn't that be really cool?...Sharon

This isn't about promoting or condemning formula. It's about marketing which

is a whole different ball game. Very few women cannot breastfed.

Unfortunately huge numbers of women have no support and or get bad advice and

thus quit. I don't know whether this is true for you but I think it's

important that we remember as a culture that breastfeeding is possible for

almost everyone. As a bottlefeeding culture we are however much more

supportive of bottlefeeding. We as a culture convey the message that it is

difficult and only possible for a select group.
