Dear Carol - this nurse MUST be reported. This is an appalling

situation. First, if you look in our FILES SECTION (accessible from the Home

Page of this forum web site) - scroll down until you see the FILE 'NHS

COMPLAINTS PROCEDURE' and follow the information there http://f1.grp.fs.com/v1/EBebTIL33GXi8QH34FskDwgtcWFEYcOvTSJXtS6P-Fkw_w1uxqm8F03peLigPM4o43fbtj9j5G-OONMUyjxhXA/NHS%20COMPLAINTS%20PROCEDURE%20/NHS%20COMPLAINTS%20PROCEDURE.doc

Please ensure that every letter you write, you keep a copy, and

insist on written responses. If anybody at any time telephone's you with

information regarding this complaint, ask them to put the information in

writing and send it to you, and keep a copy of the time, date and the caller as

you may need these at a later date should that person deny such a call was

made. If you keep in mind that should this case go as far as it should, then it

is absolutely essential you have copies of everything. I would also get your

Mother's consent for you to read her medical notes and take copies of anything

that is relevant.

Our mother was diagnosed as having COPD by Dr

Pallav Shah at the Chelsea and Westminster hospital, London. She was doing

quite well with the treatment he prescribed, we got her moved here to Maidstone

from London, so that I could look after her as she is 73 years old. She was

asked to attend an appointment at her new doctors surgery with the nurse who

did some tests and told her that she in-fact did not have COPD and she withdrew

one of her inhalers, over the next few months my mother struggled on getting

worse and worse. When my mother asked well why can i not breath the nurse

replied i dont know dont you know why?? ( the impication was her weight). The

nurse had a wry smile on her face as she said it. This upset my mother very

much.

In the end my sister and I made an appointment with the GP. who has now told us

that Dr Pallav Shah at the Chelsea and Westminster did diagnose this condition.

We are very very angry the the NURSE is allowed to withdraw medication from

patients that has been prescribed by a top consultant in the condition she has.

HI CAROL

It seems that you too have a problem with getting your Mum referred back to

Chelsea and Westminster.

I too had surgery done in the same hospital, but when things went wrong in 2005

they refused to send me back there. Despite the fact that we are supposed to

have the choice of any hospital this is a lot of rubbish. After going through

many complaints I have been told that I am to be referred back, but when is the

question, and how long it will take to get funding is the question, but due to

having to wait for so long my health has got much worse that surgery may not

even be an option.

I know that they do have a lot of royalty treated in Chelsea and Westminster, so

I wonder if their costs are higher, and so the PCT's are not prepared to fund

treatment.

If they think your Mother has cancer are they not bound by the two week ruling

for referring patients and was perhaps the GP trying to get your Mum referred

quickly under this ruling.

COPD is a group name that can have a number of different causes which usually

smokers get, but not limited to smokers.

If you get no joy from the surgery sending your Mum's referral, and they only

have to fax them now I would ask to see the practice manager to enquire why. If

they do get the referral sent off enquire with the hospital if it has been

received and how long the waiting list will be.

If your Mother has thyroid problem then her weight is not her fault, but to

deprive her of inhalers that helped her breath so that she could do more and be

more active in turn keeping her healthier is like cutting her access to good

health.

Hi Kathleen

You have the same name as my mother :-), My sister has been pestering the

doctors surgery for information they are now saying that they cannot discuss our

mother without her consent.

This is an email she recieved today

I have spoken to Dr **** and as you are asking for confidential information we

need to obtain permission from your mother to pass on this information to you.

I have been unable to contact your mother by telephone would you please contact

her and ask her to telephone the surgery to give verbal consent which will need

to be followed up in writing for our records.

Thank you

J**** ****

So I got my mother to telephone them she could not hear what was being said, but

I think they said they want consent in writing so i quickly wrote this, and she

signed it.

Dear Dr ****

Please send copies of any correspondence regarding my health to my two

daughters, electronic mail and hard copy to be sent to **** and **** .

We would also like copies of any recent tests plus the reference ranges, and

copies of all tests in the future.

Hard copies to ****

Yours sincerely

They obviously do not want us to know when it was sent out if it has yet even.

So far it has taken them a week, but thats not including the wait for the

hospital X-ray which she was then told to phone for an appointment with her GP

after 10 days, so much time has been lost already.

My poor mother has been suffering and they are not interested in my opinion.

When she saw another nurse at the surgery after they stopped the inhaler she

told her she could not breath no action was taken. We know think she may have

had a hole appeared in her lung she kept saying she had pain in her back that

moved around apparently her lung looks like its been partially collapsed and

that would make sense, as this can happen to copd patients, but they still need

to rule out cancer as the xray is not diffinitve. sorry for spelling mistakes i

do my best.

My mother is still worried about upsetting her GP she does not understand what

they have done to her. They have not offered to send her back to the chelsea and

westminster only a local hospital, but i looked up on choose and book and found

another with less time wait and better outcome, so i had to write to gp and ask

for her to be referd there. I do feel we are being given the run around, this gp

surgery is in a poor area of our town and not being horrid but I think most of

the patients just do as they are told, they know no better.

Thank you for listening

Hi Shiela

Thank you for your reply, the link is not working. I have asked for all test

results and she has signed a consent letter. There are 2 nurses at the practice

the one that took her off her medication is one thats allowed to prescribe, how

short sighted is that, she should not be allowed to stop medication that a

consultant prescribed.

Am very angry.

Carol, you need to report this matter as a matter of urgency to

your local Primary Care Trust. You should find the number and address in your

telephone directory. They will then take this matter up with the doctors on

your behalf. You cannot carry on like this.

Hi Sheila

I plan on taking my mother out shopping today, and will try and get her to

agree. I shall tell her that if i went to the drs for say a sore toe and they

decided it was just that a sore toe and kept telling me i was making a fuss

about nothing and after sometime it turned out to be cancer and i had to have my

leg off, would she not be angry then and want the person reported, if not they

could do it again to the next person. She is fiercly protective of me and my

sister and I know what she would say.

I shall get my sister to do the reporting as she is more articulate than I.

Thank you for your support.

I also have a letter for the GP and wondered if you would look at it as i cannot

remember the level they keep your TSH at when on thyroxine and want to make sure

my letter is correct as he told my sister the thyroxine was only a trial.

Will open a new post for that

Thank you

I took my mother out today and tried to explain whats been going on to her. in

the meantime it turns out her gp has been to her home and phoning her, trying to

get her to agree to go to our local hospital and see a dr there whos second is

respiritory. I told her just tell him no, but of course he talked her into

seeing the dr we told them we didnt want her to see and that, we wanted to use

the choose and book system. He has accused me and my sister of bullying our

mother which is not true. She is getting very upset and so am i and my sister.

Why would he go to her home to convince her not to have choose and book? My

sister and i are wondering if he is trying to hide something. I phoned the

Chelsea and Westminster where she was going, and a lovely lady dr rang me back

later. She understood exactly what we were doing and said infact her GP was

bullying her. She is going to speak to her old consultant as she last saw him

just before the nurse removed her inhaler.

I hope she can convince him to somehow call her back.

We want to complain about this GP and Nurse but I cannot at the moment i am just

to upset.

HI CAROL

Your Mum is lucky that she has two Daughters to fight for her, as neither of my

Daughters even keep in touch in turn depriving me of knowing my Grandchildren.

They would want your Mothers consent it writing to discuss her condition.

I had this problem with my former Husband, and we were making each other ill. I

also left a surgery due to how pills were misused by GP there, and suffered

from cancer which I am sure was caused by a drug, and after that I suffered a

water imbalance again caused by miss management, and I felt like I was going to

die, so I vowed I was not going back. I changed surgeries to a female GP, but

the former Husband refused to leave the surgery even though they told him he had

to (he did not want a female GP).

I think that from word go If you are man and wife both should be informed of

each other's health while in the room together. I am afraid that it is due to

GP'S that marriages fall apart. Today I also think you should be able to know

each othes sexual history, as this in turn would prevent much illness.

It is my belief that the NHS has pulled our marriage and family apart.

I suffered badly with my lungs in childhood, and I am not sure if the thyroid

problem caused it, but there is widening of part of my left lower lobe called

BRONCHIECTASIS and before antibiotics quite a few children suffered through it.

The problem is that this area can get infected, so two people in a family with

lung illness with one refusing to go to a DR causes things to be worse, and what

with children bringing home infections as well was not good.

With this condition it can cause a collapsed lung which I suffered from twice,

and at one point here I must have been too ill to remember they had to drain the

lungs of either air or fluid, so I do not know if it might be a problem with you

Mum.

I also must have survived childhood without antibiotics, but today I am not able

to take them. In turn no older person can take the same dose as ones parts are

wearing out, so be wary of this, as a Doctor will say that it was correct

recomended dose for an adult, and when I mention to young Doctors about

treatment with a hot poultice which used to be in a tin and possibly had some

herbal remedies which had to be heated and placed on ones chest over some gauze.

They were not stupid as the heat got rid of inflammation in turn infection. Ask

your Mum if she can remember anything about this treatment.

It looks to me also like there have been delaying tactics like they have done to

me I should have been referred back in 2005 but now my health has got so bad I

do not think I could get up to London let alone what surgery could do now.

Luv to all

that would make sense, as this can happen to copd patients, but they still need

to rule out cancer as the xray is not diffinitve. sorry for spelling mistakes i

do my best.

You need to ask the Nurse WHY you cannot complain about this GP

at the moment. As far as I am concerned, the sooner you start a complaint, the

sooner your Mum will be seen by somebody who actually cares. This GP has no

right to call on your Mother without her specific request for him to do so, and

this could be reported to the GMC. Start first by contacting your local Primary

Care Trust and they will help you.

I took my mother out today and tried to explain

whats been going on to her. in the meantime it turns out her gp has been to her

home and phoning her, trying to get her to agree to go to our local hospital

and see a dr there whos second is respiritory. I told her just tell him no, but

of course he talked her into seeing the dr we told them we didnt want her to

see and that, we wanted to use the choose and book system. He has accused me

and my sister of bullying our mother which is not true. She is getting very

upset and so am i and my sister. Why would he go to her home to convince her

not to have choose and book? My sister and i are wondering if he is trying to

hide something. I phoned the Chelsea and Westminster where she was going, and a

lovely lady dr rang me back later. She understood exactly what we were doing

and said infact her GP was bullying her. She is going to speak to her old

consultant as she last saw him just before the nurse removed her inhaler.

I hope she can convince him to somehow call her back.

We want to complain about this GP and Nurse but I cannot at the moment i am

just to upset.
