Guest guest
Hey Barbara: I have been in the Atlanta area almost three years also. I was diagnosed with CML in April 2005. It took almost a year to get to hematological remission with the Gleevec. I got associated with Northside Hospital and was set up to do a BMT if it went that direction. I was very fortunate to find an unrelated 10/10 match through the pool. I also had some heart issues after starting the Gleevec. I had to have an Angioplasty done in July of 2005. I had not had any issues with my heart up to that point in my life. I was pretty sick last year but being a single parent, I had to keep working everyday while I worked through my medical issues. I am still not sure how I kept going. I am glad that I now am being monitored by my heart doctor also. Keep an eye on that for sure. I live on the southside of town in Stockbridge and I really like the area overall. We came from the San Francisco bay area. It took a while to find a doctor that was qualified to treat CML. Some to the Dr's claimed to know the disease but the treatment I recieved was not right with the Gleevec. I kept looking and found the right Doctor. Glad to hear from someone in the ATL and don't give up hope with this. Therese Stone Barbara <barbdig@...> wrote: Hello, my name is Barbara and I live in the metro Atlanta area. I was diagnosed with CML last month. Of course, it was a complete shock as I had a CBC to check my thyroid because I had started gaining weight for no reason. I had my first blood test today after 1 week of medicication. Very excited, WBC was down and spleen unltrasound not enlarged. I have a son getting married on the 26th and hope the fluid retention problem doesn't kick in, if it's going to, until after the wedding. I moved my parents (80 & 85) to this area 3 years ago because my Father has Alzheimers(in a home since Sept) and my Mother's health is also not good. Since she doesn't drive any longer, I have to do all the driving, going to check on Dad, doctor, groceries, etc. I'm very concerned as to the long term effect this medicine/illness will have on my energy level. I have spent many hours on the internet learning about this type of cancer. I look forward to getting to know everyone. Anyone in this group in the Atlanta area? Guest guest
I live in Locust Grove, so we are close to each other. I was referred to Dr. Sidhu in Stockbridge. She basically said because I was 61 I probably wouldn't be a candidate for BMT. I hope I don't have to deal with heart problems in addition to this. I have to go to Emory for a consultation because the FISH test shows Chmse #22 is now playing with #1 as well as #9. Not a good sign I'm told. Just have to take it 1 day at a time. Thanks for the reply.
