Guest guest
Hi , What dose of Gleevec are you taking? Have you ever tried splitting up the dose throughout the day? Say, if you were on 400 mg.. taking 200 at lunch and 200 at dinner. It's very important that you eat a well balanced meal with Gleevec. Some people can get away with a light meal, but I always feel crummy unless I take it with my largest meal of the day. I always drink a lot of water with it too. Hope this helps. You might ask your doctor about switching to Sprycel (approved now) and see if that is a better drug for you. Some folks who had a lot of problems on Gleevec are doing much better on Sprycel. Did the GI doctor do an endoscopy to look at your esophagus, stomach, etc. to see if Gleevec has caused any damage. I had a lot of acid reflux when I was on Gleevec but did overcome it (with lots of juicing to offset the acid in the drug).........now I am on Sprycel and it is much easier to take and easier on the stomach. Guest guest
I have asked my Dr. about the new drug but she really didn't say much about it. I do have an appointment for a follow up consult with the Gi Dr. They are looking at doing a scope sometime soon but I don't when. Hopefully i will have some answers soon. Guest guest
It's funny I have the exact opposite problem! Before being diagnosed last summer I had dropped 35 pounds in about a month and a half but once I started taking gleevec the weight came right back no problem, and then some. Trust me, I needed to keep that 35 pounds off, I'm 5'3 and my last weigh in in I was 176 pounds. I have not reached zero on my FISH yet. I was at 3.4% last November after being 98% at diagnosis in August 2005. My local onc started messing with my dose because my white count was always so low. So by February 2006 my white count looked pretty good but my platelets were getting real high again then my Mayo doc got concerned scheduled me for another bmb and Fish and my FISH had showed 28% in March, by the end of May it was 68%. I had gone from 300 mgs of gleevec a day back to 400 mgs in March then to 600 mgs in May then to 800 mgs in June. My last FISH showed 3.8%. I have noticed that I have more bouts with diarreha but definitely no weight loss. I guess I should just be happy that the gleevec is working for me even though I seem to still get monthly neulasta shots because I become neutropenic, but what I wouldn't give to be a size 6 again! My husband and kids say they'd rather have me fat and alive than the other! Take care, Sheila leukican <leukican@...> wrote: I am a lurker to this group, I read post and I don't question very often but I have a concern. I have been on gleevec since 2002 and have had a wonderful response. Last fish and quantative pcr has been negative. The difficutly is that I struggle with nausea, vomiting and and other side effects of gleevec, somedays it is so bad I can barely eat or I have to force myself to eat something. This past year I have dropped 35 + pounds without trying. My Dr. feels that gleevec is not the cause and that other things are causing it. Has anyone else expereinced this? I have seen a GI dr and everything is always normal, they have no explanation for any of this. I don't feel depressed, nor do I think it is psychological. I just fell so ill somedays and it is hard. Any one have any comments or suggestions that could help me? I am at a loss and really fustrated with the whole bit.
