Carolyn - thanks for that input

The medical establishment has not accepted the notion of a familial

component in CLL.

Personally, I am very convinced of it.

My mother had mult myeloma, and two of my great aunts had leukemia. (In

those days diagnosis was not so specific.)

Since I seem to be a genetic copy of my mother (I have literally everything

that she had, physical and psychological) I cannot believe that her myeloma

and my CLL are a coincidence.

I received somewhat different info about the familial component at Dana

Farber when Dr. Gribben was there. I was told that since my mother has

it (now 86), the chances were greater for me getting it, which became

reality and was diagnosed in 12/2001. My concern was for my son and I

was told that statistically he has a greater chance than the general

population to also develop cll. They also were really excited to have

blood samples from my mother to look at the similarities.

I just joined the Dana Farber study too because my mom had it, I have it

and I'm worried about my son and nephew. The hospital that biopsied my

mom still had the tissue and other than that I understand it just is

necessary to fill out a survey and get a blood test. If there is anyone

else out there that has a first degree relative with cll/sll please join

the study. They are trying to find out which genes are turned off or

turned on in people with the genetic component. It may help all of our

kids. Carole from Vermont
