Re: Erythromycin for Infant Reflux Disease. Anyone...?

I just wanted to say that my baby had gastroparesis (delayed gastric emptying) and reflux. We were using first Reglan and Prevacid then added Erythromycin. Erythromycin works GREAT and really helped my daughter. It really helped her to digest her food quickly and reduced her vomiting. Plus Erythromycin does not have any CNS side effects like Reglan. The only motility drug I know of but is not available in the US is Domperidone. Betty Ann (Mom to Emma 11 months old with MDS)

Thanks, Betty Ann.

Did you give Erythromycin for a lengthy period of time or was it just a short-term therapy in addition to Prevacid?

's been on Prevacid for 9 months, but it doesn't seem to be doing the job 100 pro.

Hi ,

I posted this in response to a reflux question from someone on the

DSTNI chatboard:

Will has had reflux since birth. They put him

on reglan and zantac and his pediatrician kept him on it for 9

months. I researched it and knew of the potential side effects. It

scared me, but our pediatrician insisted it wasn't harmful (go

figure!) I didn't notice any side effects with him though, thank

goodness.

We went to a GI, who put Will on erythromycin (the anti-biotic) and

prevacid instead. THe " new theory " is that reflux could be caused by

bad bacteria in the stomach. After some initial loose stools, Will

has done great on the erythromycin! He was taking 1.5 ml three times

per day and we just cut him back to twice a day. He is just over 1

year old now. The GI also said that prevacid is preferred to

zantac. Evidently, the erythromycin is such a " weak " anti-biotic,

that its not a problem being on it long term. And except for

possible stomach cramps/loose stools initially, it has no bad side

effects.

You should also check out this website: www.parent-2-parent.com.

There is a chatboard there just for infant reflux issues. I found it

to be extremely informative.

Hi : We gave Emma Erythomycin for a long time. It was three times a day. Our schedule was like this: Prevacid twice a day Erythromycin twice a day. Reglan three times a day. What I found was that Emma needed something to help with digestion about every three hours so we broke the cycle up something like this: 6 AM Reglan and Prevacid 9 AM Erythromycin 12 PM Reglan 3 PM Erythromycin 6 PM Reglan and Prevacid 9 PM Erythromycin We found this schedule to really work great. She took these medications until she had her g-tube remove (this was placed due to failure to thrive because of her heart defect AVSD). After heart surgery and she got strong and was able to eat by mouth again we had the g-tube

removed and then once that balloon that held the tube in her stomach was removed she no longer had any problems. Also my daughter did not have any side effects from Reglan. I believe that it may occur at higher doses than a baby would take. The best thing is to take your child to a gastro doctor and try different things until something works. Our doctor said that once the child is mobile that gravity usually helps take care of the stomach issues. Betty Ann

Thank you, and also Betty Ann,

's been in hospital for 4 days now (no end in sight). His reflux

has flared up again and he has stopped eating and drinking. He was

given a barium meal yesterday, showing that he DOESN'T have reflux

(doctors can be nerds which was proved once more). They said his

intestinal motility is a trifle slow, at the low end of what's

considered normal.

Today he's in for a gastroscopy, so I hope they'll find something this

time. We think his upper GI must be inflamed again, but the doctors

insist it is impossible because he's on Prevacid. I hope he won't have

to get tube fed. We'll see.

Oh dear!!! I totally missed this!!! I am so sorry to hear he is in the hospital! YIKES I hope they find something and something that can be addressed. Did this happen all of a sudden? Not sure if this is related at all, but just in case- after had been SCD for a while she started getting what I thought was the stomach flu very frequently. She would just start vomiting and keep at it all night, then the next day would be OK. Finally dawned on me that perhaps it wasn't a bug and started experimenting. Turned out to be nuts! Her nut muffins and cookies, which she had been enjoying with out a problem for the better part of a year, were suddenly making her vomit. It was a pretty violent seize too. Noticing or developing a reaction to a previously tolerated food item seems 'common' on SCD, so maybe you want to try some elimating of foods

and see if anything improves? My first hunch would be the soy, it's a high allergy food on a good day and many people can not tolerate it. Let us know how he is doing, poor kid!! While you are there maybe the hospital has a good feeding therapist you can consult for ideas on getting him to eat other foods. And yes.. I have heard of people using antibiotics for GI issues. And there are some on the pecan list who have used them too. Here's praying no tubes and for succes in getting him out and back to eating.
