Guest guest
I wasn't sure if this had been posted here yet (as one of the things I lost in the computer crash was my link to the escribe site, which is how I have always skimmed/read this list. : / ) Amy This Nike ad is running in the current issue (October 2000) of Backpacker Magazine. It is shocking in its offensiveness and insensitivity. I have already written to express my outrage, to tell them that they have lost my business and to demand both an apology and a clear indication of the depth of their regret... a sizable donation to the National Spinal Cord Injury Association for starters. Please write them on their website www.nike.com or send email directly to swoosh@.... Please forward. Marcie ======================================================= FROM ANOTHER LIST: An advertisement in Backpacker Magazine (October, 2000). It is an ad for Nike ACG (All Conditions Gear) extreme sports trail running shoe: And I quote: " ...Fortunately the Air Dri-Goat features a patented goat-like outer sole for increased traction so you can taunt mortal injury without actually experiencing it. Right about now you're probably asking yourself 'How can a trail running shoe with an outer sole designed like a goat's hoof help me avoid compressing my spinal cord into a Slinky on the side of some unsuspecting conifer, thereby rendering me a drooling, misshapen non-extreme-trail-running husk of my former self, forced to roam the earth in a motorized wheelchair with my name embossed on one of those cute little license plates you get at carnivals or state fairs, fastened to the back?'... " Nike has a web site www.nike.com On that site they have a " talk to us " area to send messages. I believe an apology should be printed, not just the ad withdrawn. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Marcie Roth Director of Advocacy and Public Policy National Council on Independent Living (NCIL) 1916 Blvd. Suite 209 Arlington, VA 22201 (703) 525-3406 (Voice) (703) 525-4153 (TTY) (703) 525-3409 (Fax) marcie@...(Email) www.ncil.org (Website) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Have you registered to vote? Guest guest
looks like they heard from lots of us-- I'll copy and paste my reply in case some of you did not write to them Thanks for your e-mail. We have heard from a number of people who took offense to a particular paragraph within an ad for the Nike ACG Air Dri-Goat trail running shoe currently running in several outdoor magazines. We offer a sincere apology to those people, their family and friends. Clearly, disabilities of any form are no laughing matter and that paragraph should not have been included in the ad. We are immediately pulling this offensive ad from future publication. The intent of the print ad for the Air Dri-Goat trail running shoe was to communicate the benefits of using the right equipment to prevent injuries. We certainly did not mean to offend, or make light of any form of disability. Nike has a long and proud history of supporting the athletic goals of people of all levels of ability. We firmly believe in the philosophy of our late co-founder, legendary track coach Bill Bowerman, who said, & #8220;If you have a body, you are an athlete. & #8221; Nike has a strong record on employing people with different abilities, and has included athletes as diverse as Craig Blanchette, Casey , Ric Munoz and others in its advertising. Nike also outfitted the 2000 Australian Paralympic Team. A former Nike president, Bob Woodell, suffered a spinal cord injury and is confined to a wheelchair, and we have a Disabled Employee Network. For more information about Nike and our dedication to corporate responsibility we invite people to check out our web site at nikebiz.com. Guest guest
Sounds really interesting. I need some new shoes anyway. ( I would like to know how many miles I walk each day?) A great way to start back is to walk/run. Walk a block, run a block, or count steps if that works for you. Walk 50 steps, run 50 steps. Then tomorrow or the next day increase it to run 60 steps. You will be amazed at the progress you make. And write it down. How long you ran. Walk/run ratio if you want. It will make you feel like an athlete, guaranteed, and you will be sooo proud of your progress. Guest guest
Just FYI-you don't need to buy new Nike shoes-you can use the Ipod/Iphone/Nike Sport Kit to keep track of your pace, distance, calories, miles, etc as long as you have either an Ipod Nano or an Iphone 3GS (and don't mind using them to run/walk with). The kit is only about $30-it is meant to coordinate with Nike shoes-but there are several inexpensive holders you can use to just attach the tracker to your normal shoes. The kit has really made a difference in motivating my running! > > From: Wayne and Wynn Schneider <mrfreezeagt (DOT) net> > Subject: Re: [insideoutweightlos s] itunes > weightloss @groups. com > Date: Friday, April 9, 2010, 10:36 AM > >  > > Ellie! > Congrats on your run today! Guest guest
Morning, Constance; Wondering about your steps etc. there are two solutions. Of course you could use a pedometer. They can be very inexpensive and will help you to get a handle on how much you are doing and how much you can really do if you try your best. I am hooked on my Nike+ system. I transmitter in your runners sends info to a receiver which you attach to your i-pod and this gives you all the info you could ever want. It can be expensive to get set up. You need an i-pod, special runners and the transmitter/receiver system. I would certainly recommend it, tho. It is the best motivator I have ever found, because you can join challenges all over the world. You can start considering yourself a runner as opposed to an overweight, lazy lump (my description of myself) Even a running log works beautifully. Get a notebook and write down what you ran or walked each day. You can use time or distance or steps or whatever works for you. But seeing it in black and white will give you a feeling of accomplishment and probably a motivation to improve. To add a little more or go a little faster. Come join us! Take good care, Wynn [insideoutweightlos s] itunes > > , I read your post and panicked. Guest guest
Adidas has a new one, too.. It's a little more.. but it's a lot cooler than the Nike one. I own a Garmin, which I love.. as ugly as it is. Corinna
Guest guest
Omron (folks who make blood pressure monitors & other 'medical' type devices) make great pedometers and I wear mine all the time. They can be 'hooked' to your computer and will upload all the info (steps per day, aerobic steps, miles, calories burned, etc.) every month (they hold 42 days of data). I find having a pedometer on very motivating in keeping me going!  ________________________________ From: Wayne and Wynn Schneider <mrfreeze@...> weightloss Sent: Mon, April 12, 2010 6:56:04 AM Subject: Re: Nike  Morning, Constance; Wondering about your steps etc. there are two solutions. Guest guest
I did 3 miles this afternoon after waking up, but ran only one mile of it. So I'm still building up. What I use is a stop watch and put it in an excel spreadsheet. I need to catch up to today's technology. It sure feels good getting out! I have premeasured distances in my neighborhood from 2 to 12 miles. I used google maps to measure them. Most are out and back on city streets. - Dennis Elya > > > > > > From: Wayne and Wynn Schneider <mrfreezeagt (DOT) net> > > > Subject: Re: [insideoutweightlos s] itunes > > > weightloss @groups. com > > > Date: Friday, April 9, 2010, 10:36 AM > > > > > > Â > > > > > > Ellie! > > > Congrats on your run today! Guest guest
Vicky - I have dropped 20 lbs in the past year but haven't gotten any faster.. I keep waiting! Maybe I need to get closer to being not obese to see that. *sigh* One day.. I'll get there. Maybe not sub 50 minutes.. but that isn't MY goal. Mine is a sub-55mins 10K for this year.. and to complete at least 1 try-a-tri.

Guest guest
Yay for the tri! I have registered for my first sprint triathlon. It will be Aug 22 and I am still building a base but slowly gearing up training intensity- now that it's getting warmer, I can run and bike outside which is so much more fun!!! Good luck on your 10 k and let me know how your triathlon plans are coming along! Jantje > > Vicky - I have dropped 20 lbs in the past year but haven't gotten any > faster.. I keep waiting! Guest guest
Wynn - I completely agree. I wish there were other sloooooow runners in my area is all. I am a pack animal. Running is the first " sport " where I am not at par with everyone else. It's a huge challenge for me to get there. (I am a stubborn woman)
