Do NOT feel like a lousy mom! You are doing much more than alot of moms!!!

Just go on from here.

Now, in OUR district, the school does not get funding if the child is not

there AND a child with an IEP gets double the $$ that a reg ed child does.

So, when we were having problems with the aide, we kept him home until they

hired and trained an appropriate aide. We had a meeting and put this in

writing and they KNEW they were under the gun. We also made sure that the

school board was aware of this. (I cannot stress this ENOUGH!! The school

boark knows only what is told to them and they only here the GOOD from the

school so YOU need to let them know otherwise. Our school board took and

interest and to this day if I have a problem, follow the channels, and my

last stop is the school board and it is fixed IMMEDIATELY!)

Have you filed complaints with the state dept of education? They need to

know what is going on also. It seems to me that he is NOT in the reg ed

class 75% of the time.

I would also keep him home but I would call an IEP meeting and get things

straightened out NOW.

His IEP says 70% of school time in regular education and he is

in the ROOM....I don't know what they call it but it has a TV,

VCR and a sink and no regular kids go in there that I know of.

He is in there because....I don't have a good answer. I thought it

was very temporary - like ONE day until they could get someone

from the county in there to do another evaluation and provide a

behavior plan for Ted. They use this ~hold~ when they don't like

what he is doing or if he is not complying. I say NO holding him

for any reason! That was wed. the 4th of this month and a week

later on Tues. they did this hold twice, so I kept him home the next

day and that was the day the county finally made it there to observe.

So then she calls me and says they will next go in another week!

What I saw today was so pitiful and I feel they are detrimental to Ted's

well being and I won't be sending him.

Gail, this is good advice. I was thinking too that they wouldn't get their

money if he wasn't there. Otherwise they would probably be glad to have you

keep him home. And I agree you ARE being a good mother. We are all behind

I am really sorry to here all about this crap... This blatant disrespect of

the law, Ted & you!

Wish I could come up there & kick some booty. We Parent Panthers enjoy a good

Hi

I spent a whole day in my sons 7th grade classes observing everthing. I

learned that no 2 people knew what the other was doing!!!!!!!! Aides and

teachers did not know he was deaf in one ear. Guess which one they always

spoke into!! Mrs. marchand did you bring in Grants papers today?? " No " I

said they are in the book on the table that you never sent back home

yeasterday and they are all filled out. " oh " someoneelse must have gotten

them(no 2 know the same thing remember). So I am told to sit wherever I want

to observe 1st pewriod. Guess who stands in front of me with her least

desireable part in my fface??? me i just move after she does.

Gym day, Mrs marchand where are his gym clothes?? Well they are here at

school they have never come home. Oh I see you sent new clothes " He can not

where jeans " . Hmmm these are his in case of a bathroom accident clothes not

gym. So where are the gym clothes?? well maybe the person with him in gym

yesterday put them in his locker. Off to gym they go. He is outside in his

gym clothes. I said " oh you found his clothes " yes they were in the room.

yep the room that did not have them 5 minutes ago. Differnt aide was asked

this time. Now why would mom want to have 1 aide only when we can play these

games!!!! I mean 7 aides makes for an interesting learning style. I even got

to eat lunch in the caferteria withmy son. Gag choke. next time we will brown

bag it!!!

The principle stopped me on the way out and asked about my day. I was nice

but he got an earful!!! My son now has spelling words and I never even

talked to the language teacherjust the principal!!.

I could go on but seems I already did LOL.

My sons IEP says Parents WILL be visiting on and off. NO one with me. I just

sit and watch.

In the good state of Wisconsin they will gladly give up the money if you keep

your kid at home. Since the feds only pay a tiny portion of what they are

suppose to and the state is getting tighter also they are better off here if

the higher need kids are kept home rather than attend school.

I know what you mean about the glasses. Karrie's are usually filthy when

I pick her up from daycare. Luckily, her pre-K teacher was an optician

before she got her teaching certificate and she keeps Karrie's glasses

clean.

How 'bout you and Ted move here? It's not the best, but it sure beats

where you are at!!

Kate loved the note, stickers and picture of Ted. But once Karrie got

the picture of Ted, it became HER picture Had to hang it high on the

refrigerator for protection! Thanks!! Soon as I get their pictures, I'll

be sending them on to you!

Gail, This is Pam Mom to 8. I so wish I could come there and give that

teacher a piece of my mind. She sounds as if she is just putting in her time

with Ted. loves library and would never behave if he knew he was being

left behind. I just do not understand where they are coming from. What is

this school hiding? If ever got a taste of TV and lounging in beanbag

chairs he would never do his work. How is Ted going to learn appropriate

behaviors if he is restricted to a room and not let out with the other

children? Shame on them. I also cannot believe that a trained teacher could

behave so badly in front of a parent (with her questions and ans. for

herself). What is she like when she is not being observed? I always tell

's teachers....I mean remind them to leave a long enough pause for

to formulate an ans. and give one. He won't if not given the time to.

I know I am not helping but my thoughts will be with you. I will be

Gail, You are NOT a lousy mom. A lousy mom doesn't care what happens to

their child. A lousy mom would not continually fight city hall for her son.

I do think it's high time you took legal action. I'm not sure I wouldn't be

on a plane to another state. I have had to threaten things (which I had

every intention of doing) to get what needed. They obviously

changed Ted's placement without an the IEP team changing the IEP, correct??

Sounds like you're ready for the fight.

Hi Gail

I am soooo appalled at the behavior of the school team. I feel so bad for you

too. I don't remember if Ted has had a FBA yet? was a BIP drawn up? If not

this needs to be done ASAP (request it in writing) and you can be a

participating member on how that Behavior Plan is drawn up. As far as the way

the instruction is presented to Ted, it is sooo boring. Sara would develop

sooo many behaviors being taught in that manner. They would have lost her on

the 3rd question Heehee I know in Sara's psychological summary it states she

struggles with instruction like Ted's. Go back and look at all of his

summaries and throw it in their faces. They must teach him using his

strengths. Know we are all with you

In this case, sounds like you might be right! It also sounds like there are

people here who aren't trained very well, or who aren't credentialed special

ed teachers. We all make mistakes, but this is getting beyond human error!

I'll be interested to see what happens next!

Did they provide a prior written notice of a change of placement?

Why is that if they did neither, they are massively out of compliance and

you can pursue as a non-complaince issue. (but if you hear of any really

good place to move, let me know. I am considering an any port in the storm

scenerio)

I've been mulling over your post and it is a depresing one for sure. The

one recomendation i would make is for some videotaping to be done. It

would be helpful with regard to the development of an appropriate

functional assessment and intervention especially, with regard to the lack

of meaningfulness in Ted's program and how their interactions with Ted are

an integral component of this deficiency. Anything you say to them about

your obs will be met w/Skeptecism. With video, you will be able to make

these same points in a much more convincing manner.

Anyway, them my thoughts. :-)

Oooh yes, videos don't lie and it may reveal other kids behaviors Heehee

I suggested this too for Sara's school. Sometimes they are so busy watching

Sara they miss the kid next to her flinging milk cartons at the lunch table

Gail,

From what I have witnessed in person, you are an excellent mom. Don't allow

yourself to question the decisions you have made, you have always done what

you thought best. Your situation with Ted reminds me of what I went through

with . He was separated from the others all the time, negative

behaviors increased, and he learned absolutely nothing that year. My

decision, remove him to a better learning environment for him. I proved

that the public school system could not meet his needs and he is now

attending a private special needs school. I know that this is not always

accepted by others as the " right " thing to do. I felt like I was giving in.

HOWEVER, until can speak well enough to tell me when something is wrong

I was overcome by fear that any anger toward me would be taken out on him

that I just couldn't take any more. He nor the other students were

benefiting at all by him being there. His progress in his new school is

absolutely AMAZING!!!!!!! well, except the bus I, at this time, know I

did what was best for . You know Ted. You know what is best for him so

fight to get it. We are all sorry that you are going through this but do

know, that there is light at the end of the tunnel and that we are all here

for you.

Boy, you are so right with this comment. I find it to be scary at the

very

least. funny thing..Ted was observed by persons able to do a functional

behavior assessment and then write a plan....well...Ted had a GREAT day!

They were very pleased with him and his behavior. (He is very

personable)

but...I believe it is because the teacher was being watched...she was

probably

very energetic up front and tried to do more of the appropriate things.

When

I observed I heard her say things like .. " Don't do that! " rather than a

more

positive directive.
