Do you think it would cost them more to provide segregated education for

children with disabilities since your school system is so small? Do you

think they are supported all because of philosophy or is there some financial

benefit to them when they practice inclusion?

Cheryl,

Money is a motivating factor. To send Sheila out of the district for a 6 week

ESY program the cost was $5000. To run an in district program (that was much

better!!!) the cost was about the same--but covered 10-12 children. Out of

district placements cost between $20-30K per year. Sheila's in district cost

is not nearly as high even though she has a one-on-one para ($7-8K/year). The

biggest motivating factor was the superintendent did not want the district

taken to court, because legal fees would break our district. He told me he

would support a parents wishes in order to stay out of court. But I put him

on the Aim High mailing list when I was editing the newsletter and several

years later he told me that reading my articles really helped him to

understand why we wanted inclusion and this made him want to do it because it

was right for children.

Thank you for the explanation , the price comparisons go along with our

discussions about whether it cost more for inclusion. So much better when

they do it for the right reasons and save money too! ;-)

HI I wouldn't say we were rural, really a suburb with many elementary schools

and they are still building more. The Max in classes here are 24 kids, Sara's

have always been 21, and 6 for Resource. Isn't Clinton enforcing lower class

ratios? something titled ahhhhhhhh " Basic Education Program " well our area is

enforcing it this year (it was the last year for them to file an extensions

of time)

Copied from : <A HREF= " http://www.state.tn.us/education/glstime.htm " >TN:Educ:G

The Education Improvement Act calls for reductions in class sizes by an

average of five students at every grade level by the school year 2001-02,

which is four years after the new funding formula was fully funded. In

addition to the lower school-wide class-size averages, the EIA also

established maximum sizes for individual classes.

1992............Class size maximums are established through the legislature.

Timelines are set for meeting the maximums with no waivers allowed.

2001........... Maximum class size mandates are met in all schools.

This is why new schools are popping up everywhere now lolol

Im searching this now ........The Education Improvement Act
