Guest guest
Hi Loriann, Yes, the internet is very intriguing, to the point where I can get pretty carried away by checking a site that leads me to another site, etc., etc.! But, I think we are all a bit smarter by virtue of our internet, don't you? I am glad that you found what you needed! I wish you and yours a very Happy Thanksgiving! Sincerely, Carole M. Guest guest
Hi Carole M., I did a Google search for " Pain Foundation " and found there seems to be quite a few interesting groups with those words in their name, and a search for " Pain Diary " found more good stuff. Since I can't even remember what it was I particularly liked about the one I mentioned, I'm sure one of the other ones I found will do just fine. Thanks for prompting me to search around a bit. The internet is SO fascinating, isn't it?? Take care, loriann > Loriann, > > If you can't find that one, the Pain Foundation has some that I think can be > printed out.Are you aware of them? > > Carole M. Guest guest
Loriann, Yes, the Internet is quite fascinating! I'm very involved as a patient advocate for Pain Management. I got involved shortly after I visited a 4th physician trying to find SOMEONE, ANYONE to help me learn to live with the residual pain ...the key word here being " learn to live with the pain " ...I have since my revision in 2000. I was shocked, dare say I was APPALLED, to realize how varied and often bizarre (not to mention degrading and Dis respectful) the methods were to treat chronic pain!! After being called a " hypocondriac and menopausal housewife " by one so-called " Pain Management specialist " (and I use that term very loosely here!!) and being so drugged and gorked that I couldn't even remember my own name by another, I finally fell apart in my Primary Care physician's office one day. By that time I was darn near suicidal and was beginning to believe I was crazy. Unbeknownst to me, my P.C. doc just happens to be quite knowledgeable in the latest GOOD methods of Pain Management ! He explained that he had been getting more and more patients coming into his practice who were suffering from chronic pain and decided to start taking continuing education courses to become certified as a Pain doc. He started me on a wonderful Pain Management regime that day and has been treating me ever since. I had to sign a " Pain Management Contract " which at it 's basic level says that I will follow the regime to the letter, will not seek meds from any other physician, will not attempt to self medicate, etc. He has me on OxyContin CR (the long acting form of Oxy), Oxy IR ( for breakthrough pain...which I rarely have because the long acting pretty much keeps the pain to a livable level), Neurontin and Soma. Occasionally, depending on my symptoms, he will alter the med regime but it's pretty much remained the same over the past 3 years. I am one of the lucky ones...I found someone who is not only well educated in Pain Managment but compassionate, em pathetic and kind as well. I am one of the lucky ones! I found a physician who has helped me " learn to live with the pain " ...sadly, many people are not that fortunate. According to Dr. Stacher, former Surgeon General of the US Public Health Service, " nearly 50 million Americans, almost one quarter of our adult population, suffer from persistent pain. It is one of the most common reasons why people go to a doctor " . I'm quoting Dr. Satcher here from a press conference I attended with him and several other pain specialists where a new virtual teaching program was introduced that will be used in medical schools as part of a med students' curriculum in Pain Management. Chronic pain is THAT prevalent in this country that it will soon (2005) be a regular course of study for medical students!! Here are some excellent, on-line sources for Pain Management: American Pain Foundation: www.painfoundation.org American Academy of Pain Medicine: www.painmed.org American Pain Society: www.ampainsoc.org/advocacy/opiods.htm National Foundation for the Treatment of Pain: www.paincare.org/pain_management/perpectives/patients/reluctance:html Pain & Policy Studies Group: www.medsch.edu/painpolicy/publicat/90jpsmf.htm I hope this gives you a place to start. Good luck with your searchch!
