Guest guest
The Center for Health and Gender Equity announces a new publication, Health, Rights, and Realities: An Analysis of the Reprosalud Project in Peru, by -Britt Coe. ReproSalud is an innovative reproductive health project funded by USAID, the single largest bilateral donor to the Peruvian family planning program. The project, begun in 1996, pursues conventional objectivessuch as reducing unmet need for reproductive health servicesby using unconventional strategies that promote reproductive health and rights through individual and community empowerment. It is run by a Peruvian feminist organization, Movimiento a Ramos (MMR), which has worked to advance the rights of low-income and marginalized women in Peru for over 20 years. This paper analyzes the effectiveness of ReproSalud's strategies and assesses the political and programmatic challenges that still impede the achievement of health and rights objectives in Peru. Coe's analysis of the project pinpoints the critical lessons that can be used to improve ReproSalud, and to guide similar efforts in other settings. The paper is free to colleagues in Africa, Asia, and Latin America (a Spanish version is forthcoming), and costs $5.00 per copy for colleagues in the United States and Europe. Copies can be obtained by writing Ronda Logan at rlogan@..., at the Center for Health and Gender Equity, 6930 Carroll Avenue, Takoma Park, land, USA, 20912, or by calling (301) 270-1182.
