Guest guest
The injections are given where the nerves exit the spinal cord, and/or directly into an inflamed area. You do not go numb below the waist, like epidurals on pregnant women. The shots are given to reduce or eliminate nerve, muscle and tissue inflammation and pain that cannot be treated with meds. All they do is lay you on your stomach and stick you with as needle. It hurts a little if they hit a hot nerve, but the possible relief is well worth the trouble. I've had several injections in my upper and lower back. They worked very well for me. And they have lasted 2 years so far. Well worth it for what ails your Mom (possibly). I had pain and numbness in my lower back, leg, and foot, and it went away after injections. Bed rest did not help me. I also had searing pain between my shoulder blades for 10 years. Nothing worked. Injections cured the pain. But mine was from a back injury. You mom should see a specialist to be properly evaluated. -Brent Epidurals Hi everyone, I have a question regarding epidurals for pain. I know gets them, but when I tried to email her separately, it came back to me as user unknown. My mother has mixed connective tissue disease and has been in severe pain in her lower back and buttock area. I suggested to her that she speak to the doctor about an epidural (remembering that it helped ). She asked me what they do (specifics). Is it anything like the epidurals they give for c-sections? How long do they " typically " (as if one can give a " normal " response) last? Do you have ANY feeling from the waist down afterwards? Do you have to be referred to an anesthesiologist who then does it in the hospital? You know, basic info. about it. Is there anyone out there who either gets them -OR- has any info on the process? Is there anyplace I can get the info on the internet? I appreciate any info. Speaking of , has anyone heard from her lately?? Thanks, Chris Howells, NY greywolf70@... Guest guest
Hi all Well after tests, xrays and a intravenous urogram (that felt weird) i have kidney stones and cysts on both kidneys - probably gonna have to be removed with surgery. I have a question though the consultant said he would prefer keyhole surgery and if possible just with spinal anesthetic so im not under properly and thus having and need resp support..but this may sound dumb but can we have epidurals if we have spinal rods???? thanks xx

I can't because I have no epidural space. That'll be a major complication when it comes time to deliver my baby.
Guest guest
I saw the anaesthetists last week to see if an epidural or general would be best for my caesarean. After looking at the x-rays of my rods and examining my back they decided it would be extremely awkward to get an epidural in because of the wires between my vertebrae and the bone that has fused around my spine, so I will have a general anaesthetic. Also, because of my scoliosis, my lungs are closer to the epidural area than the average person with a straight back, and as epidurals can also travel upwards slightly, it may cause breathing difficulties. It really depends on the individual. I would imagine the anaesthetists will do a consultation with you first to see which would suit you. . Guest guest
Dear All, I have heard that epidurals may not necessarily be good for us because the stuff is injected to the same place where the problem with SMA lies - that is to the spinal cord. Therefore we might not recover of the epidural as easily. But I'm not a doctor.... Taya Taija Heinonen Kyyhkysmaki 22 A 1 02600 Espoo Finland tel. +358 (0400 911 686 e-mail: taija.heinonen@... Guest guest
I don't believe so because usually epidural spaces are fused together in spinal surgery. At least mine were when I had surgery in 86. This made having babies via epidural & c-section a non-possibility for me. I'm assuming this would apply to other surgeries as well. Guest guest
you didn't have a c-section?
Guest guest
I'm guessing you are asking me? Yes, I had a c-section, but I had to have a general anesthetic instead of an epidural. Sorry if my previous post was confusing. Jenn > you didn't have a c-section?
Guest guest
Which kind of doctor gave you the epidurals? Having them without anesthesia makes me think you didn't get the right kind of shots. Hi lie, Looks like the surgery was a success, right? I am beginning to look to buying a condo in Fla.Maybe we will be neighbors one day. Incidentally I have had 6 epidurals without any anesthesia wasnt a big deal except didnt really help me one day I will probably follow your lead and have the surgery ,but I have to find the right surgeon meanwhile I still swim a mile a day and that does help me Re:Shanna I had pain -steroid shots two years in a row. The first year the group of 3 lasted for a whole year. The second year they did not work as well and I ended up with a laminectomy. I was put in a twilight sleep for all shots and felt almost nothing. I would definitely find a doctor that puts you to sleep. The only thing is that you need someone to drive you home because of the anesthesia. I had a milegram without anything and that was terrible plus I got the migraine headaces afterwards. lie No virus found in this incoming message.Checked by AVG - www.avg.com Version: 8.5.287 / Virus Database: 270.12.1/2071 - Release Date: 04/21/09 08:30:

Guest guest
I've had two rounds of epidurals (three injections each), both times without anesthesia. I can't remember if that was my choice or the doctor's. There was no problem having them that way. It does hurt, but only for about twenty minutes each time. You need to hold still, of course.www.OldElmTree.com - Right Where You Belong.
