I can't say for sure that I've had reactions to anything on your list,

but,

every time in the past when I started on a multi-vitamin regime, I have had

unpleasant reactions shortly thereafter.

Some people in this group have questioned the contentent not of the pill

itself, but of the coating, eg., tartrazine, as in

http://www.practicalhippie.com/tartrazine.htm

I don't really know, but I don't bother with vitamins any more.

Subject: Calcium and Co-Q 10 ?

To All,

I just had a very bad asthma attack. I'm wondering if it may be the new

vitamins I just added to my daily routine. I have been taking Omega-3 fish

oil, Vitamin A (from fish oil), Vitamin C (pure Ascorbic Acid only), Vitamin

E and glucosamine/chondroitin for two months without noticable problems.

Today I added Calcium (calcium carbonate) with Vitamin D (cholecalciferol)

and hypoallergenic Co-Q 10. Has anyone had bad reactions from either of

these? The attack happened about two hours after taking the vitamins.

I had just finished sweeping out my garage. I live in Anchorage and we have

very fine glacial silt and other standard city particulates which build up

on the garage floor over winter. So I am sure that didn't help. But I had

noticed the congestion building up and had taken albuterol. I was wearing a

mask, but those aren't perfect either.

Thanks,

Kiker

I check the labels to make sure there are no artificial colorings in the vitamins. I also look for yeast products because I know those are bad and many vitamins contain them. I try to get them as pure as possible and try to look for the hypoallergenic varieties. However, even those can have substances that are bad for sampter's sufferers. And, since vitamins are not regulated as drugs it's not clear that the makers are required to display all contents on the label. I've seen some multivitamins that had no mention of yellow dye but were bright yellow. Could be natural I suppose, but I gave them away to a friend.

Thanks,

Kiker

Hi ,

What brand of of Calcuim w/D and Co-Q-10? I am learning that brands of supplements have a big play in this Samter's stuff.

I just recently got my packet I purchased from Feingold's and will check the brands with the supplement sheet I have if you send them back.

I have been really impressed with this Feingold's. I know you go to Dr. Demain too and he probably gave us both the same packet of information, but this Feingold's is so much more precise than Dr. D's. They have brands of food that you can eat that Dr. D's list says you can't have. So some brands are okay and this organization has been doing research for 50 years.

I would guess it would be your Calcium. I just read something about calcium carbonate and either Samter's or asthma. Of course I can't find it to reference you to it. It could have been on 's "asthma" list. I remember it cause I got up from the computer to make sure I was not taking that kind of calcium.

Yes the glacier silt is awful and you will have some kind of reaction maybe, but you did have on the dust mask so I am more inclined to believe it was the new vitamins added, just cause my husband is always sleeping the garage floor while I am down there and I don't have a mask on and we too have lots of glacier silt. (hubby does tire changes so we have lots of dust)

check out www.feingold.org

It's a bit spendy, but so far worth every penny. Every time I read the books I learn something new and learn what brands I can and can't eat.

Good luck

The calcium is by Schiff and the Co-Q 10 is by Country Life.

At this point I've stopped all vitamins. I read something in a recent post about vitamin C being a problem because it and salicylates compete for the same chemical pathway in the liver. So if you have more vitamins C in your system, your liver is less able to eliminate salicylates. This was apparently for the Royal Alfred (or Albert) Hospital in Australia.

This may have been why I have another bout of sinusitis and why the asthjma flared up this weekend.

What specific books would you recommend from Feingold's. I checked them out once but didn't really see anything interesting, but I didn't spend a lot of time there.

Thanks,

Dear ,

I was allergic to calcium and I got treated for it by NAET. I think someone

asked for the websight for this - it is www.naet.com.

Dear ,

I have actually have used ester c with great success to clear up

infections. Maybe the brand I use is OK. I take Natrol Ester C for two

weeks. I also use a netti pot to rinse my sinuses twice a day with 1/4 tsp

sea salt in warm water and this works wonders when my sinuses feel

congested and blocked.

This is exactly the vitamin C I take, in the powdered form. But then I've read that vitamin C can compete for excretion with salicylate in the kidney so I cut back to just a small amount. I never get colds or the flu, maybe because I eat large amounts of fresh fruit & veggies. Now I see that a lot of the fruit I eat contains high amounts of salicyltes.

,

I too rinse my sinuses twice a day with saline soultion and take Singulair which generally controls my asthma well. I recently read some information from one of the postings that seemed to explain the problem with vitamin C. The information indicated that according to the Royal Alfred (Albert?) Hospital in Australia, vitamin c and salicylates are both expelled from the body via the same chemical pathway in the liver. So, if you have high concentrations of vitamin C in your body, the liver can't expel salicylates as quickly becuase it's expelling the vitamin C.

If true, that could explain why vitamin is no good for us.

I am not familiar with ester C? Is ester the company name or is it a particular form of C?

Thanks,

Kiker

Dear ,

Ester C is a type of vitamin c that is absorbed better in the body. I just

had an infection on my vacation. I didn't have my netti pot so I suffered

with very congested sinuses. I used my ester c and began to feel better.

After I used my netti pot I felt even better. I try to get over

infections with this plan because antibiotics have so many side effects.

My ears had gotten stuffed up again but now they are fine and I feel

almost totally well. If you react to ester c you could try another vitamin

c - I know there is an allergy c made from sago palm that I used to take.

Maybe I've never noticed a problem with vitamin c since I only take it for

two weeks or so or until all signs of the infection are gone. I was

thinking of taking it all the time but after your e-mail I guess it won't

be a good idea.

Do you have problems from the ester c that you can tell or the salicylate

foods? I think lots of fruits and vegies are really so healthy. They are

the super foods it seems. I always take the capsule form of any vitamin c

I take - less exposure to fillers, ect. How much of the powdered ester c

did you take?

I'm not sure if I have problems or not from the ester C. I just read the C competes with salicylates for excretion in the kidneys in a post. I've tried cutting back but it seems to not make a difference.
