First symtoms at the age of 19 (1981). Yes, this was related to

aspirin - although at first I just thought I could tell an asthma

attack was on its way because I'd get a bad headache (leading me to

take aspirin!)

I remember suspecting at the time that I was sensitive to the urea

formaldahyde spray insulation that had been put into the house in

limited quantities. Other than that, there was nothing unusual about

the environment.

Absolutely, especially wine and beer. Lots of nasal congestion and

violent sneezing.

after having nasal polyps removed and also after the birth of each of

My first symptom was an asthma attack about seven or eight years ago

in my mid thirties. Progressively over next few months I developed

nasal polyps and the last symptom to emerge was about five years ago

was the aspirin sensitivity.

I had moved into a new job in a new building and a new home in the

months prior to the asthma attack, but the actual inital attack

happened while on a business trip to Phoenix, I live in Michigan.

Beer and especially wine trigger nasal congestion. Spirits (scotch)

to a lessor extent.

Yes, prednisone restores some of the function but the period of

relief is progressively becoming shorter. Occasionally, vigourous

physical exertion leads to a brief (minutes) periods of partial

function.

I have broken my nose 3 separate times in my life. The first time in

my teens, almost 20 years prior to the first asthma attack, The

second a year or so before the asthma and the most recent 3 years ago.

Systemic Steriods have an impact but as reference above the effect is

diminishing. For the past five or six years I have taken a prednisone

prescription (the 5 day pack that starts at 40mg - I think - and

steps down) about every 6 - 8 months. Earlier this year my ENT

suggest that I try a 5mg daily dose. I did for 30 days, saw no

improvement and discontinued. Yesterday, I had my first shot of

Kenalog. I also take Singulair, Claritin, Flovent and Serevent. The

comination of those 4 has kept me asthma symptom free for the past

three years.

I experienced an asthma attach at age 32 (26 years ago). Over the

years, I have become a servere asthmatic. There is a history of

asthma and nasal polyps in my fathers family. Did not detect any

aspirin reaction at the time, but was told to avoid it it by MD. The

asthma attack followed a severe bout with a sinus infection which was

handled by antibiotics. Later in life, only ten years ago I found

that my max. sinuses were blocked off - probably since the orginal

attack.

No environmental issues at the time

My current MD is recommending that I go through an aspirin

have polyps etc. in my sinsus and MD wants me to try the aspirin

thing before surgery. Has anyone heard of these programs and their

outcome on nasal polyps/asthma

I have talked to my doctor about this and he advised me not to go through

with it. He said that it is a program where they overload your system with

aspirin and that you have to continue to do this on a daily basis, if you

miss one day then you have to start all over again. I have read several

articles and statements, when I did my research on the web about this, that

stated that many people have had successful outcomes with the program. I

did not find anything that stated that aspirin desensitization helped

control the polyps. I would suggest that you do some research yourself and

then make a decision. Good luck.

Thanks for the input.

I am proceeding with more research. The program in California is a controlled study where I would be "locked up" in a clinic for 8 days as they overload me with aspirin. I have not yet discussed the program with anyone from the clinic - waiting for a contact.

My Dr. has been watching the program for the past year and says results are good. He has had one patient go through it with excellent results (with regards to asthma).

An improvement in my asthma, would be a big leap forward even if I still had to deal with the polyps.

I believe it is possible to carry out this proceedure personally, but

I have looked at this site before but I have not tried to do the procedure

personally. Even if I knew how, I would not use this procedure, I would

hate to have to start all over again. Now, if there was just a treatment

that you had to take for a period of time and then it was over then I would

consider it.

Hi again Rob

I would not try this procedure without medical support either, as my

broncho-spasm reactions to aspirin were life threatening and required

hospital admission.

Although I do not see why you would have to re-start if you missed a

dose.

As I understand it, you are given a gradually increasing dose and are

observed for adverse reaction.

You are then held at the dose below your reaction level for a fixed

period. If you have no further reaction, the increase continues until

the testers consider that you can tolerate aspirin.

What is not clear to me is, If you get to the point where you can

tolerate aspirin, do your polyps slow thier growth, or stop? The

test reports are not conclusive.

In my case, if I was carefull to avoid aspirin, my asthma was

tolerable. Sampter sufferers have fast growing polyps. slowing down

the wee ******s is my main interest.

It seems like a dangerous, and time consuming procedure, if the only

outcome is that you can use aspirin.

It was just a year ago, I had a severe allergic reaction to

Advil. My tongue swelled, my throat swelled and I was given epi and a

breathing treatment in the ER. By February, I couldn't breathe

through my nose, and CTscan showed lots of inflammation.Long story

short, 8 months later I'm diagnosed with Samters. I've had 3 courses

of Prednisone, and 3 of Medrol since February.

No. Everything was the same as always.

I cannot see how that would happen. Your Body reacts to the

aspirin " challenges " which are prescribed, by building a resistance.

I understood that when a reaction occurred, you backed off to

stabilise. Then continued until the body was used to the " challenge " .

1985 - Took an excedrin tablet- got rushed to emergency room. Age-

mid 30's

alcohol as it has a very bad effect.

No, unfortunately my sense of smell has well and truly gone!! Which in some

cases CAN be a good thing.

1. I had the my first asthma attack after taking an Alka Seltzer

plus. I was sick with a bad cold. I did not know what was going on at

the time. Had to go to the ER. They told me I had an asthma attack

and to go to the doctor. I was 30.Has anyone else had so much trouble

convincing any of your doctors that you have a problem with aspirin

and ibuprofen? Some have acted like they think its' all in my

imagination. I tell them it makes me wheeze.Even after bad experience

with Naproxen. My doctor now says just because one thing did that

another might not.Like I said in another post I don't want to play

guinea pig. I almost died.

2.I have no idea where I had been or was previously.

3.I got really sick after drinking a beer once. I mean bad headache

and feeling dizzy. I did not make the connection to my other

problems. I have drank a beer or two since then and no problems. I am

not a drinker. I don't really indulge. I have had some wine recently

and it did not seem to bother me. My doctor said wine was good for my

asthma. He also said eating olives was good.

4.I have never heard of it.I will do a check on the net after I

finish this.

5.I had severe nose bleeds as a child. I had to have my nose packed a

few times. I mean I lost a LOT of blood when I had one.After a really

bad one in my late teens an ENT cauterized the inside of my nose and

my nosebleeds stopped.I also was in a bad auto accident and had my

nose broke right before I developed asthma.

6.I have occasional tinnitus.I also have pressure and vertigo. I have

had to be on Antivert at times for extreme dizziness and feeling off

balance so bad.

7.I tested for a slight reaction to milk and vanilla of all things.

8.STEROIDS make me feel like a new person. I get my smell back and

can breathe. They are so bad for you though. After surgery I improve

greatly.I have had eight of them. I hate to say it but I think my

polyps are coming back. Here is a list of meds I am on.

Flovent inhaler

Serevent inhaler

Singulair (pill)

Beconase AQ nasal spray

Combivent inhaler

Allegra (pill)

I also have a nebulizer at home to give myself breathing treatments

if I need it. I got that after being in the hospital with pneumonia

for four days last September.

read all. So, belatedly, I'll answer your questions if that's

My first symptom WAS an aspiring reaction. Before the first

reaction, I'd been able to take aspiring with no problems. Didn't

find out about the polyps for years after the first aspirin reaction,

though.

How old were you? first aspiring reaction: about 48 years old (am

56 now)

Was commuting between Los Angeles and San Diego. Home environment,

now that you ask, had a water problem in the basement so probably

lots of mold down there. But it wasn't a new problem; had been

dealing with it periodically for several years.

Alcohol does not cause an asthma attack, but I do, now that you ask,

get horrible hangovers and so have cut 'way back. Also, no

real " buzz " from a drink or two (the mostI ever take), unlike before

YES. Hardly any taste, and literally no smell. It's the worst

symptom of all.

Nasonex, Flonase -- spray twice a day, seems to control the

obstruction problems so probably easing the size of the polyps,

especially on left side. Doctor who diagnosed Samter's also recently

(about September '02) added Singular to my prior regimen for asthma,

and that has helped with the obstruction.

Nothing has helped the anosmia.

Beconase is also sometimes prescribed, and does not work very well.

I treat at a free clinnic, so have to take what I can get some

months. For Singulair, they enrolled me in a special program so I

can get that regularly.

I first began experiencing symptoms at the age of 32 (14 years

ago). I have had no noticable reaction to aspirin.

I cannot recall any environmental triggers. I was living in Phoenix

Arizona at the time and was not in a wet or moldy environment.

1.I had my first reactions reactions a year after I was diagnosed with

asthma, in 2000. I wasn't an aspirin fan before that, so I can't tell

if I had any previous attacks. I might have had. Soon after I had my

first polypose surgery. Since then I had 3 surgeries, tomorrow at 10

a.m., I'll have my fourth one. I am 26 years old, so I was 19 when all

this ordeal started.

I had anaphylactic shocks several times from aspirin. I was trying to

relive symptoms that my hypertrophic rhinitis gave me: migrenes,

rhinorrhea etc, so I took aspirin. All stopped when my ENT told me

that I had Widal's triad (Samter's) with aspirin intolerance. Since

then I had only problems when taking Ibuprofen, Algocalmin and some

other NAIDS, by accident, because not knowing that they were similar

in composition with aspirin.

2. I was at my home where I grew up. I can't tell if changing

environment had an influence. My home town is actually in a valley

surrounded by small mountains. Due to that pollution is kind of at

it's peak there.

3. No alcohol reaction. None that I can tell. Of course NOT as similar

as aspirin attacks.

4. Complete. I wish I'd smell bathroom odor sometimes.)

5. Not tinnitus. Just a slight hear change in my left ear. Clogged ear.

the most, but again only as the polyps were small enough.

Surgery is the key. Tomorrow morning it'll be my 4th one in 8 years.

Soon I will start aspirin desensitization. Let's see how my suregery

will go.

1) I had a reaction to Advil 2 years ago which was fairly mild. Sneeezing and runny nose for around 20-30 minutes. This has happened a few times since then.

2) Before this happened I wasn't anywhere unusual...home, work, the usual places.

3) I can have alcohol although sometimes I get stuffed up from it. Beer seems to be the worst. I CAN take aspirin. In fact, I have been taking a baby aspirin twice a day with no symptoms whatsoever (this was my idea--based on what I hear from other Samterites I don't recommend that anyone else try this). I think it actually makes me feel better.

4)I have total anosmia which started around 4 years ago.

5) no trauma to nose, although I've had allergies (hay fever) for most of my life.

6)No ear symptoms

7) No particular food sensitivities although I suspect that eating sugar and white aggravates my condition.

8) Rinsing with salt water does help although no more than twice a day. Singulair DOES NOT seem to help me at all. Nasarel (2 puff in each nostril once a day) seems to help also. The only thing that helps me get my sense of smell back is Prednisone, but it didn't help very much when I took it this past July.

1. When did you first experience symptoms, and do you remember an

life, When I was about 8 years old I would get nose bleeds from asa

but then it seemed to go away. Then when I was about 14 or 15 I

started having anaphalacics reactions but we only knew it was an

allergic reaction to something. Back in those days they brought out

the cardiac cart with the huge needle (cardiac needle like in the

movie Pulp Fiction) to inject epehedrine directly into the heart

should it start. I think sometimes that's why I'm so heart heathy

now. A couple of Dr's have told me I have a heart like a race horse.

Sometimes I will get very bad sneezing and runny nose but not always.

Beer and red wine seem to be the worse but generally I avoid alcohol

for this reason.

sympoms? No but have had it broken in fights. This past surgery the

Dr. was really surprised, seems few people have a perfect septum and

mine is picture perfect.

yellow food dye, my mom thought that meant I couldn't eat corn,

squash etc but it was the dye they used back in the 80's they don't

showers but now I use my Neil Rinse, havn't started back on nasonex

but it helped for a couple of years.
