Guest guest Posted August 22, 2005 Report Posted August 22, 2005 That is true I read somewhere that using any kind of mint flavor causes reactions. I haven't had any kind of reaction to my toothpaste, but I have had reactions to any kind of mint gum or mints so now I usually try to avoid them.jbsjbs21 <evacub@...> wrote: Hello everyone, I have some questions for all of you out there. My ENT scared me and told me that if I do ASA densens and I miss even one dose os ASA afterwards then I wold have to do it all over again. Is this true? My doctors also told me that there is no wa that Tylenol could cause a reaction but it does with me and seems to with some of you. Do many of you also have bad allergies? And also a few years ago I started having a reaction to normal toothpaste nad would have to use my inhaler or nebulizer after every time i brushed my teeth. I know that mint has a lot of salicytes but now i can only use all natural fruit flavored toothpast, and i cannot chew minty gum when i think my breath is bad so i am sure i have bad breath alot! Has this happened to anyone else? Quote
Guest guest Posted August 22, 2005 Report Posted August 22, 2005 Supposedly you can miss 48 hours before you lose the desens. Guest guest Posted August 22, 2005 Report Posted August 22, 2005 Your doctor is patently wrong about the Tylenol. If anything, my reaction to the Tylenol was quicker and more severe than the one to the aspirin. I'm not sure why. It also appeared completely out of the blue, a few months after my last aspirin reaction. Both are anaphylactic reactions for me, so, yes, Tylenol can be really dangerous if you've ever experienced any sort of problem with it at all. I also had mint issues and I switched over to Whitening Expressions Cinnamon. It seems to work okay for me. They make vanilla and citrus too, but the thought of those grossed me out. I use Listerine cinnamon breath strips during the day. Not everyone can tolerate cinnamon, but you might want to give it a shot if you haven't. It's the next best thing to mint, I think. I know that lots of other people do citrus everything and they have citrus non-mint mints. Like, altoids makes a tangerine and so forth. Lots of choices. Hope you find something that works for you. > Hello everyone, > I have some questions for all of you out there. Guest guest Posted August 22, 2005 Report Posted August 22, 2005 Dr. son's info on surgery says to take one aspirin 2 days before, none on the day before and none on the day of surgery but to start up again after surgery. That would equate to around 48 hours. I know I have missed at least a full day(24 hours) and probably a little longer and have not had any problems. Guest guest Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 Hi again , If your doctor does not believe you about the Tylenol, maybe you could look for some articles on it, because there are some written that show that some people do cross-react. Samters patients could have bad allergies (I do) or many do not have any allergies to speak of. I don't know if anyone answered the aspirin dose question, but missing one dose will not have an effect on the desensitization. I don't know exactly how many doses you can miss before you become desensitized, but as an example, many people take 650 a day, although I took 1300. So they're taking half the dose that I took, and they are still desensitized. I think the most I ever went was missing three doses, but I'm not sure. I use a toothpaste called Biotene that is also great for many people with polyps and nasal symptoms because it is specifically for dry mouth and seems to have completely reversed my early gum disease. My gums don't bleed at all anymore. I don't think the original flavor has any mint. I do not have that problem with mint, but I know others here cannot have mint. Guest guest Posted February 13, 2006 Report Posted February 13, 2006 ; It's not fatal it will just revert to the way it was. Basically you have about 48 hours off asa before you become 'undesensitized' so to speak. Your doc is being a bit dramatic. Guest guest Posted February 14, 2006 Report Posted February 14, 2006 he's definitely right about the polyps coming back. i was doing great after i did my own desens but slowly but surely my stomach started to give me problems even with the enteric aspirin so i decided to lay off for a while. after a couple of days the polyps came back with avengence. i decided i better get back on the aspirin so i started eating a chewable childrens 81 mg aspirin with my meals and so far no problems with my stomach and the polyps are starting to shrink again. i dont recommend self desens for everybody but i knew i could probably get away with it cause i use to take a baby aspirin every day back in the early 90's when tim johnson on 20/20 said it would be good for my heart. i had no problems with it at all but for some reason i decided to stop taking them. i think that's when this disease started for me. i just did'nt know it at the time. maybe if i had gone back to the aspirin, back then, i could have avoided two polyp surgerys and close calls in the emergency room with asthma. i could be completely wrong about that but i guess i'll never know . > > Hello > It has been awhile since i have written but i have a very important question that i hope > someone can answer. i did the aspirin desens in oct and have had great results with my > polyps not coming back. however. my dr recently said something to scare me. before i > did the desens he told me i have to always tkae the aspirin or if i did not my nose could go > back to how it was. well, when i had a check up a few weeks ago he kept stressing to me > that i cannot miss more than couple days if i ever forget to take it. then he told me that if > i forgot for a few days in a row it could be fatal. has anyone heard of this or has anyone > done the desens and then just stopped taking th aspirin. needless to say that scared me. > any thoughts on this would be great because i am scared. thanks > > laura > Quote
Guest guest Posted February 15, 2006 Report Posted February 15, 2006 For some people the aspirin reactions are worse after you are desensitized and then go off aspirin. Why don't you ask him what he meant? Lori Quote
Guest guest Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 Hi People I think the Dr ment if you stopped for a few days then started up again with the usual dose it could cause a huge reaction. I you stop for more than a few days you would need to be desened in hospital again.. just in case of a reaction.. i have had to stop the asprin a few weeks before ops and its not the stopping that gets you its the starting up.. Guest guest Posted March 28, 2006 Report Posted March 28, 2006 > I find taking 20 mg pepcid in the morning works well most of the time. I also tend to drink more coffie in the morning. If I am under stress I will take 20 mg bid. Pepcid is an H 2 blocker that is available over the counter. A sidelight. My office staff gave me some flowers today and I had a wonderful day. Between patients, I kept sticking my nose in the flowers to smell them. This is the first time since 1986 that I can remember smelling flowers and that was only on a super high dose of prednisone. > what do you take to counter act the upset stomach you get from taking > the aspirin after desensitation? can you get it over the counter? > thanks. > Quote
Guest guest Posted March 29, 2006 Report Posted March 29, 2006 so it will keep the aspirin from burning a hole through my stomach? also will continued use of the pepcid create any health problems? > > > I find taking 20 mg pepcid in the morning works well most of the time. > I also tend to drink more coffie in the morning. Guest guest Posted March 29, 2006 Report Posted March 29, 2006 I got around this by switching to Ecotrin or generic enteric coated aspirin. It dissolves (or is supposed to do so) in your intestines instead of your stomach. When I took Ascriptin I could only go a few days before my stomach rebelled. - > > what do you take to counter act the upset stomach you get from taking > the aspirin after desensitation? can you get it over the counter? > thanks. > Quote
