Hi Kellie!! Welcome to the group. I'm in Oklahoma so I don't have any

experience with CT in Burbank, however, the DOCband is an excellent product

and it is very, very rare that you will hear anyone say anything but good

things about it. We do have a number of members who have used or are using

the CT in Burbank so hopefully one of them will respond.

do deny coverage, my advice is to appeal & appeal. Don't give up! A

lot of our members are currently fighting with their ins. companies.

Hi Sara,

It's not to late if your interested in banding/helmet therapy. Many members have had good results after one year- Cranial Tech bands up to two years old as that is when the skull has finished hardening. I will attach their web site for you, although there are many different local places, as well as the STARband products to choose from- I'm sure you'll get tons of info from everyone on these! Hi & welcome to our group!

We're glad you have found us! Unfortunately, SO many pediatricians

give us all the " their head will round out on it's own " story. Some

babies heads might, but not all will.

You definitely still have time to get correction for your daughter's

head shape! My daughter, Abby, didn't begin her DOCband therapy

until she was 11.5 mos old. Abby's plagio was considered severe, but

we were still able to get good correction with one band in 4.5 mos

time! We are thrilled with Abby's results. Where abouts do you

live? You can visit Cranial Technology's webpage at

www.cranialtech.net . If you are near any of their locations, most

offices offer free evaluations of children's plagio.

Has your pediatrician referred you to a specialist yet? Most of us

in the group have been referred to a specialist for an evaluation

from them prior to receiving a band/helmet.

You still have time for treatment, We have other moms that have used helmet therapy at 12 months and have seen improvement although it is slower it can still be effective. After only a little over a week we see some slight changes!!! I say

definitely there is still time to do something about it. Have your

ped. refer you to a neurosurgeon or a Cranial facial surgeon. They

really good results. Where are you located? You might check out

www.cranialtech.com to see if there is a CT clinic near you (they make the

DOCband) or www.orthomerica.com (they make the STARband). An active band like

one of those would best for your " older " baby.

I'm sorry...I think I may have misled you. My two and a half year old is a DOC band graduate (yay) but my six week old is now looking like she may need one too. I probably sound like a paranoid mom, but my pediatrician actually brought it up to me at Abigail's last visit. The funny thing is, she was very cavalier about my first daughter's lopsided head. I think she's probably seeing more of it and it has really opened her eyes.

Maybe I should take this time to properly introduce myself ...My name is and my husband Pat and I have two girls - Madison is 2 1/2 and is the DOC Band grad. Abigail is 6 weeks and it's her head I'm worried about. I'm trying all kinds of repositioning and really appreciated the website with all the tips. I'm trying to be so militant about this, but it's hard. Hey, by the way, I'm sitting here watching the news (as I type) and they are doing a story on DOC Bands! How wild is that??? (I'm in Tucson - Channel 13 KOLD)

Well, that's about it. I must say that all the info is amazing. What a community this has become. I was a member of this e-list two years ago when Maddie was wearing her Band and it was great then, but wow! It's amazing now. Hi . Welcome to the group. You are going to get some awesome advice, I know, but I just wanted to chime in and say hello and maybe a few pointers.

Flat heads in babies is happening everywhere now due to babies sleeping on their backs to prevent SIDS. I noticed my son's flatness on the right side of his head when he was a little over two months. I noticed it while looking in the mirror at him. Unfortunately, I listened to the advice of his pediatrician, who told me that it is normal, that they're seeing it all the time due to back-sleeping, and not to worry. It will round out on its own. So at the time, being a 22-year-old first time mom, I listened, because I figured they would know better than I. Never a mention about repositioning, nothing about tummy time. So I continued to let him sleep on his right side like he preferred. My son did not like to turn his head to left, which we later found out was due to mild torticollis, which is a tightening in a muscle in the side of the neck they seem to be avoiding. That requires PT or some exercises you can do at home to get them trained to turn their head to the other side. My son seemed to work his own out once he reached the age of being able to sit up and crawl.

Anyway, my point is, there is a 99.9 percent chance that upon seeing your child's ped, you will be told what many here have been told: "You are overreacting. No one's head is perfect. It will round out on its own." The fact is that many pediatricians are not educated enough about this subject, and that is why we have many members, like myself, not getting treatment started until close to 12 months of age, which, although still effective, is not as effective as it would be if the child had been treated earlier.

If you see a dr about your son's head, be prepared to stick to your guns if your gut is telling you that it isn't right. It all comes down to what you want for your son. Don't let a dr dismiss you the way I was. It is unfortunate that at the time I didn't realize that drs are not perfect and are in no way gods.

I would continue to give your son supervised tummy time during the day. Most babies don't like it at first. There are Boppy tummy time products you can buy that will help them prop up and look at things and have little rattle-like toys attached. Also, try repositioning him at night when he sleeps. There are several techniques. I used a big rolled up towel wrapped in a blanket and propped it under his right shoulder, the plagio side, which caused his head to roll to the other side. You may receive great results at your son's age with repositioning, but by the time a doctor with a clue told me to reposition, my son was almost seven months and he had a mind of his own when it came to sleeping.

So with that, welcome again, and I know you're going to get some great advice that isn't all jumbled up like mine. it's hard to organize so many different thoughts without rambling for pages! : ) Good luck to you! You are in the best time right now to fix this!

Kellie (awesome post!) and I would just like to add that sometimes plagio is

caused or progressed by torticollis (a tight neck muscle). I have found in

talking with several moms here and at pt, that a lot of Doctors don't spot

torticollis right away, they may even diagnose the plagio (flatness) first,

although the torticollis may be the underlying cause of the plagio. Has your

child shown any signs of favoring one side? Is he able to rotate his head

fully to both sides? Does his head tilt to one side? Some of these

questions may apply even to a child without tort, and I only bring it up to

make you aware of this condition. In the event these answers are yes, tort

is usually muscular and can be treated with physical therapy. Address any

concerns you have with your ped at the 4 month check up- and sooner if you

really think this is an issue.

You have lots of time on your side for repositioning to work for you- and it

has for some parents- and not for others (myself included in the latter). If

your son's case is mild and there is no facial asymmetry, its my opinion that

respositioning can really work for you. Its not always easy to keep them off

that flat spot though, and Kellie gave you some really good tips for that.

You can also check the database as well. You can try using a mirror, or

putting him on the bed while your on the floor looking up at him- my son

seemed to tolerate tummy time better this way too. Good luck and please keep

us posted on how your repositioning efforts are going!

Have you tried the Boppy Tummy Time Mat? My son refused to be on

his tummy unless he was on that. With the mat, he would tolerate it

for about 5 minutes (5 minutes better than nothing!) I would suggest

carrying your son around in a sling or a baby carrier to keep him

off the flat spot. I recommend a maya wrap (mayawrap.com).

Repositioning can help a ton at his age. We saw repositioning

improvement with my son's flat spot, but his facial asymmetry was

quite stubborn

Welcome to the group! We're glad to have you.

Your son is at a good younger age for you to have noticed his plagio

& to increase supervised tummy time as well as repositioning to keep

him off his flat side.

Most infants don't like tummy time at all! It can be such a stuggle

to keep your child happy while on their tummy. Hopefully though,

with every day of tummy time, your child will get more & more used to

Hi all,

just has a small flat spot on the back of his head...it's kinda off

to his right side. I have been giving him more tummy time, lay him on

his side for sleeping, and got a pillow type of thing that is supposed to

help with plagiocephaly. At least it's supposed to help prevent it. I'm

not sure about correcting it.

I am definitelyy going to mention it to his doctor (though we see her in

a month!).

Hello all, I am Angel, joyful wife to Jim, and mother to 9 blessings. I

heard of this group many times from Lynn R. and finally came over to see

what it is about. I have a small farm, 4 milch cows, and 3 goats in

milch, pigs, calves, chickens, etc.....and we try to eat healthy, I have

been browsing NT for a while now, cannot seem to find enough time to

read it through, so just try to glean what I can at present. I have not

gotten to the eating of raw meat, but do consume lots of raw dairy,

yogurts, cheeses, etc. and lots of fresh veges. I am thankful to be able
