Has anyone done a study on unvaccinated children and the incidence of

disease? I'd like to know if unvaccinated children experience frequent ear

infections, fevers, etc.

My daughter rec'd one Hep B vaccine that she reacted to. None since. NO

EAR INFECTIONS....a little excessive wax. My homeopath prescribes 1 tsp.

of flaxseed oil daily....amazing every say 6 weeks or so a chunk of wax

just " falls " out. My husband, to this day has many ear problems. I had

many, many ear infections as a child (even had tubes). Definately a link

in my mind between vaccinated & unvaccinated.

Tyler is unvaccinated, and he is a very sick baby. He's had numerous ear

infections, (4 that I believe existed, and 7 diagnosed by doctors) (none of

which he had antibiotics for..) has pollen allerges, and is now so sick they

want to admit him to the hospital. I am so thankful I stopped his vaccs at

2 months. Can you imagine what more damage they'd do?

No, they just say he has them and they are very common in babies. I don't

do anything for them unless I can TELL he is sick, and acting like a grump.

Then he gets Nutribiotic. But now he has a tummy sickness. Don't know

what, though...

He gets to see an allergist soon, he already has pollen allergies, (and he's

only 11 months!) so food is a possibility. I don't give him milk at all, he

gets soy milk. The only dairy he gets is occational cheese, and I haven't

given that to him lately, either, because I know dairy is bad (or shall I

say " worse " ) when you are sick. Thank you for the caring and advice!!

I also have a 3 month old girl who also reacted awfully to the first dose

of HEP B (at 3 weeks of age). We also said NO MORE. Does your daughter

take the flax seed oil via mouth with a dropper? And does she take it

okay? My daugheter seems to have quite a bit of ear wax herself and I am

interested in trying the flax seed.

My sister had several sets of tubes put in her ears as a child and she

was fully vaccinated. Finally, an allergist diagnosed food allergies

(milk, citrus, food coloring..just to name a few). Once my mother

changed my sister's diet her ear infections virtually ceased. Is this a

possibility with Tyler? There are allergy tests that can test the blood

for confirmation of food allergies. I have also heard of many kids

Jack has been having them over and over again since he was 12 months. We

just keep using antibiotics and of course they work only temporarily. I am

curious about how you got through the ear infections without using

antibiotics. I know that you wrote about using Nutribiotic and am familiar

with that but was wondering if there was anything else you did. I mean did

you just comfort your son through all the pain until it was over? How long

did his ear infections last?

Jack just really seems to be suffering with them and I guess I am too afraid

to wait it out. We have started chiropractic treatment and are hoping for

the best with that. However, he has been sick with a cold with heavy

congestion for about a week so I am sure an ear infection is brewing. In

fact we were up all last night with little or no sleep because of congestion

and probably ear pain.

Please help if you can. I truly appreciate it.

I tend to disagree with the theory of non-vacc getting no ear infections. No

doubt it weakens the immune response, but both of my kids were breast fed

exclusively and no doubt experienced fewer than most, both got ear infections

(or so that's what we were told at the time) I think the cause could be more

of an allergy thing and then exacerbated by constant use of antibiotics. We

did not use antibiotics with our two and they came through fine. We did,

however, change MY diet b/c felt that they were reacting to something I was

eating and sent our second to a chiropractor. All the difference in the

Robin, I know you addressed Shalia, but I couldn't help but feel for your

situation and wanted to put in my 2 cents...When either of my two had ear

infections, I decided against antibiotics b/c my feeling was that it did more

harm than good. We were also given the stats by our pediatrician that more

than 75% of ear infections were viral but they prescribed antibiotics just

IN CASE. Yes, we had a couple of sleepless nights. We used garlic oil and

warm compresses. Had them sleep with me propped up in our bed. Let the

fever do it's job and they always ran their course. My 6 year old son

recently had the flu ( a VERY bad case of it) in the end he ended up with an

ear infection. All of the sudden he said " Mom, there's something in my ear "

and two hours later he was screaming with pain. I was afraid he had put

something in there!!! I rushed him to the doctor and, on the way there, had

him chew a piece of gum. That usually helps with draining. Not, of course,

if your child is too young for gum. Sure enough, he had a blaring infection.

The very next day, his ear drum ruptured. There is no pain when that

happens, actually relieves the pressure. It heals up in about two days, and

according to the doctor, you can't even tell with an earscope that it

happened ..usually just a little dot. I did put him on antibiotics when that

happened b/c I was afraid with him having the opening in his drum that IT

could get infected. But, made sure he had PLENTY of acidopholus(powder and

in his yogurt) and he was fine afterwards. Both of my children also see a

chiropractor. My 2.6 year old started with ear infections (both of our

children are not vaccinated) at about 6 months and she was exclusively

breastfed. Our doctor suggested an allergy to something in my diet. Turned

out it was wheat. I stopped eating wheat and started her with the

Chiropractor and 2 days later, I had a new baby. The difference was amazing.

Anyway, just wanted to share my experience. Hope it wasn't too long winded.

In the cases of ear infections, I have a few theories.

My sons are 2 and 4 and were both breastfed and I gave them occassional

bottles of formula. They neither have EVER had an ear infection. My 2 year

old son has never been sick and never had to use antibiotics, although my

older has been sick a few times.

In some cases, do you think heredity plays a part? I was never ill as a

child and neither was DH. My children are never sick.

My sister in law, on the other hand, was constantly ill all her life and

continues to be as an adult. Her son, age 3, is also constantly sick. It

is one ailment after another, ear, nose, throat infection, cold, bronchitis,

he has even had pneumonia when he was 1! He was also breastfed for about 3

months.

Just something to think about...

I am very curious about the possiblity of allergies. I spent an hour today

trying to find an allergist who would see Jack and could not find one that

Robin, Forgive me, but I forget, how old is Jack? Hannah Lyn was only 8 mos

old, so we narrowed it down to what I was eating...she was exclusively breast

fed at the time. Dairy is the number one culprit but seeing as Im not big on

dairy, the next was wheat. That was about 85% of my diet!!! So, we took

wheat out of my diet and she was better. If he is breast fed, look at your

diet. The third most common allergen is eggs and nuts. Just a thought, let

It is a natural antibiotic made from grapefruit extract. Works really well,

faster than the amoxcicillin (sp?). I am allergic to almost all

antibiotics, and I'm fine with this. I get it from Good Earth, a

neighborhood health food store. The drops are really good, and Tyler only

objects a bit when he needs to take them! LOL

Have you ever been to Parent Soup? There is a board on there called

Alternative Health Care. They have ALOT of good earache remedies. Tyler

doesn't usually get grumpy, and seems to be OK (he's still to young to tell

me if he is!)and so when he isn't a grouch, I don't treat him. When he is a

grouch and obviously sick, he gets the nutribiotic. But I know there are

alot of people on Parent Soup http://www.parentsoup.com/boards on that Alt.

Health care board with ideas. I've heard things about garlic, and candles,

and other things I don't remember off the top of my head. I wonder what

others know?

Also, someone else posted here something about how antibiotics clear an ear

infection in 7 to 10 days, and if you don't do anything they go away in 7 to

10 days. When I DON'T give him the antibiotics, and go back for his follow

up appointment 2 weeks later, they always say the ear infection is gone, so

why use them when they go away. The only time I even give him nutribiotic

is when he is a grouch, because it makes him happier faster. Don't really

know why.

Does anyone have that article that was posted a couple months ago about the

antibiotics?

Dear Robin,

I have two sensitive or 'allergic' children. In my experience with

conventional allergists and naturopaths who use muscle testing and

elimination diets to detect allergies, a child may react to many foods

without these reactions showing up in traditional scratch tests done by

allergists. These tests only show histimine reactions (e.g. anaphylaxis and

hives) and not digestive or nervous system reactions.

Our daughter has celiac disease and sensitivities to non organic foods and

our son has allergies to bananas and wheat.

Using elimination diets, muscle testing and careful charting of what I (in

the case of our then exclusively breastfed son) or my child ate and their

behaviour patterns, symptoms (diarreah, constipation, vomitting, tummy

aches, etc.), I could often track down the culprit. Dr. Rapp's books on

hidden allergies are helpful too.

I don't have tha article but I have read the same thing in several

mainstream magazines and heard the same thing on the news. I also use

the nutrabiotic nasal spray when I get congested due to sinuses.

Someone had wrote about the ear candles. My mom has used them a couple

times and it helped her. I can't imagine using with a young child

because they absolutely have to stay still because the end of the candle

that is not in the ear has a flame...thus no moving around can occur. My

mom personally swears by them.

For ear problems I have used a combination remedy of garlic, olive and

mullein oil.

And again, homeopathic stuff works great. That book Smart Medicine for a

Healthier Child is great. It lists what to use based on very, VERY

specific symptoms.

Wheat is the majority of my diet and his as well. How did you get rid of the

Dear Robin,

If you find that eliminating wheat helps, and need recipe and cookbook

ideas, let me know. With Kaisha off all gluten and off wheat, I've

done a lot of digging in this area. Our family uses whole organic foods

only and I make everything from scratch for our health and to ensure that I

know what goes into everything. Gluten is especially problematic to

eliminate if you use packaged foods.
