So perhaps it is not out of place to look at this issue from the vantage point of the cow. There's a book called " Factory Farming: The Experiment That Failed " (1987: Animal Welfare Institute). It shows how animals such as cows are treated. Apparently, there is a strong emotional bond between a cow and her calf, and cows can be heard crying all night after their calves are taken from them. I don't want to sound too doctrinaire, but I don't think that it is unreasonable to state that just like the issue of mother's milk vs. cow's milk, nature could not have intended that the product from another species could be superior to that which can be derived from a human mother. This is not finger pointing. We all still use animal products in the form of leather, gellatin, etc, etc. But an ethical and humane society should look for ways to break away from our dependancy on animal suffering. If anyone believes that one such product is personally helpful, then use it. But the least you could do is stop touting it. I'm sure the people who sell the stuff could do a much better job of it. Guest guest Posted November 17, 1999 Report Share Posted November 17, 1999 Colostrum is produced by cows AND humans for weeks, even months, before the babies are born and can safely be " harvested " . I'm 31 weeks pregnant now and have been leaking colostrum for about 14 weeks now whenever a baby around me cries or when I lean on my breasts without thinking about it. I'm sure if I went ahead and bought a breastpump right now, I'd be able to produce measurable amounts of colostrum for whatever use. I'm going to ask my midwife if she thinks it's worth it to do just that; pump some now and freeze it for use by my baby after those first three days of natural colostrum production, for instance, when she's sick, though I will be breastfeeding for at least two years. I'll let you know what she says.
