Guest guest
Hello Liesha Nobody can tell how long it will take you to raise your ferritin. It depends on many things, including what else you are doing to help raise your ferritin (see the list of foods rich in iron below that you should be taking on a daily basis) Spatone is supposed to be the gentle way of taking iron and people often use it because they don't like the effect that tablets such as Ferrous sulphate causes. However, are you constipated at all - is there any bloating or distension? What other medication are you taking beside T3 and Cortef. Have you had any gastric problems in the past/ You should be taking high doses of vitamin C (4/5000mgs) or take to bowel tolerance, with any form of iron to help the body absorb iron. Yes, it is very important that you do whatever you can to raise your ferritin level to somewhere in the region of between 70 and 90, so you have a bit to go yet. You should be eating foods rich in iron and the following may help, but remember, drinking tea with your meal will reduce the amount of iron absorbed, so it is best to avoid it. Instead, have a Vitamin C-rich drink such as fruit juice, or fortified squashes. Also, if you are taking iron supplements it is important not to drink milk, or eat a milk-based product (e.g. milk puddings), for an hour before or after taking the tablets. This is because milk can interfere with the action of the tablet. Iron is available from both the food groups shown below, but is more easily absorbed from animal foods. Animal Foods Rich in Iron Eggs - especially the yolk Oily fish e.g. tuna, sardines, pilchards, cockles and mussels Kidney, liver, heart Lamb, game, beef Black pudding, corned beef, faggots Oxo, Bovril Vegetable Foods Rich in Iron Wholemeal bread and flour Iron-fortified cereals - Bran, Branflakes, Weetabix Beans and pulses e.g. lentils, chick peas, haricot, kidney, pinto, baked, butter, peas Nuts - almonds, cashews, Brazils, walnuts Dried fruit - apricots, figs, dates Green vegetables - watercress, spinach Rich fruit cake, gingerbread, ginger biscuits Curry powder Cocoa, chocolate, black treacle Luv - Sheila I wonder if anyone has had problems taking Spatone? I've only been taking it for a few days but each time I take it I get a really uncomfortable, heavy, leaden feeling in my stomach(no jokes about it being iron, please?! ha ha). I have tried taking it with food but it doesn't seem to make any difference. Does anyone know how long it takes to increase the ferritin level sufficiently? Sorry for so many questions but feeling pretty rubbish and frustrated right now. No virus found in this incoming message. Guest guest
You have surprised me that you are having trouble with Spatone. Are you mixing it with something like orange juice, or just water? I have tried the standard 14mg iron supplement and the spatone but neither raised my levels, in fact it went down from 30+ to 19. I persuaded the GP for a Ferrous Sulphate prescription for 3 months. I am approx half way into that and at the end of July I have to have a blood test. One way or another I feel better on it, my knees don't ache and I look a healthier colour! I was concerned my stomach may have been troubled with the ferrous sulphate as I had problems with the ordinary iron supplement, but it has been totally fine. Despite warnings about constipation, that side of things is even improved, so work that out ha-ha. I will be interested to see if my improvement in the above symptoms relates to the actual Ferritin result and if a full 3 months has been sufficient to increase it or not. What other iron supplements have you tried, or is Spatone the only one? Fiona
Guest guest
Hi Fiona Thanks for your reply. I haven't tried anything else, just Spatone, recommended by Dr P. I actually did take it with O/Juice last night and it felt much better than just with water. I'm concerned to hear that your ferritin didn't increase with it, though, and admit I'm a bit confused with the different iron stuff! In what way is what you are taking now different to the Spatone? Would you recommend it instead of the Spatone? I feel pretty rough at the moment and am maybe clutching at the straw of iron but my ferritin was only 32 when tested a year ago so I thought it couldn't do any harm. How do you feel better on it, Fiona? Love Liesha xx > > You have surprised me that you are having trouble with Spatone. I didn't feel any different with or without Spatone or the standard 14mg iron supplements. BUT with Ferrous Sulphate, I soon noticed a difference in 3 ways:

Guest guest
Hi Sheila I could certainly try ! Last night I took it again with O/Juice & it felt fine. What do you think I should increase it to? Also, could you remind me, please - should I not take it within an hour, or is it 4 hours, after T3? Sorry, I know this has probably been said many times before but a message search hasn't come up with the info. Guest guest
Read about Spatone here http://www.nelsonsnaturalworld.com/en-gb/uk/our-brands/spatone/spatone/how-to-take-spatone and look at all the information. Never take any form of iron 3 to 4 hours anywhere near to taking thyroid hormones. They recommend one to two sachets but up to 3 sachets for those pregnant. How much are you taking right now, and are you taking it on an empty tummy? luv - Sheila I could certainly try ! Last night I took it again with O/Juice & it felt fine. Guest guest
Ooops - I am SO sorry. I was approving messages and I deleted the rest of Fliss's message because I thought the top message (which was yours) was the message I was approving and that Fliss's message was what you were responding to. I am so used to reading messages with responses at the top of the page. I have smacked my own hand, and sincerely hope Fliss will forgive me. I remember the first point she made was that she had knee pains before starting Ferrous Sulphate which got better and forgotten the rest. Boo Hoo! Guest guest
Thanks for that link, Sheila. I started Spatone 5 days ago and take one sachet in the evening, about an hour or two after dinner. This is as far away from my T3 as I can get it. I do find it a bit awkward though as, due to hypoglycaemia, I need to eat a little something every 2 hours or so. But I will be careful with all the things that affect absorbancy. I think I will wait a couple of days to get my (sensitive) stomach used to it and then increase to two sachets. Guest guest
> Did you miss a bit at the end of your message? > Dunno what happened there, because I typed the three ways Ferrous Sulphate helped LOL! Perhaps I deleted it, when I snipped the old message: * Knees don't ache (had aching knees for a long time before) * Look a healthier colour and people comment I look better (used to dismiss the prison pallor as you don't get people whiter than me...) * Feeling a bit better in myself (a bit subjective and incremental). It is possible to take two Spatone a day, in fact I did this to use them up. Making the assumption you take thyroid tablets first thing and noon, I take the iron tablet with my dinner, and another one later on in the evening (didn't want to risk two together for the stomach). Guest guest
Hi Fiona The mystery of the missing message is solved LOL! Thanks for that info, Fiona. Just another quick question, if you don't mind - is there a certain dosage/type or just any Ferrous Sulphate tablets that I should get? I might think about buying them myself, otherwise I will have to stop the Spatone, wait for appointment for a blood test, wait for results, see GP, etc etc, you get the picture........! Love Liesha xx ps Sorry for not snipping before, Sheila, guilty as charged xx > Dunno what happened there, because I typed the three ways Ferrous Sulphate helped LOL! Please don't stop the Spatone supplements. Just explain that as advised you have been taking an iron supplement but you are worried it's not doing the job. Therefore you need a blood test in the here and now, with whatever iron you are using, rather than none at all. The GP told me to take two Ferrous Sulphate a day by the way. Ferrous Sulphate are not expensive tablets approx £4-6 per pot of 100. However if you have medical exemption certificate due to thyroid it makes sense to try and get it prescribed, you know on principle... Guest guest
Hi Fiona Thanks very much for all your help - I really appreciate it. I'm not really sure what I'll do but I'll still keep taking the Spatone at the moment anyway. (I've increased to 2 sachets today.) I mentioned Ferrous Sulphate tablets in passing, whilst on the phone to Dr P today and he thinks I am a bit mad to consider taking the tablets instead of Spatone as the absorpancy is so much better with the Spatone but said it was up to me, he didn't mind, whatever makes me feel better. Thanks again Love Liesha xx > Liesha. Please don't stop the Spatone supplements. Just explain that as advised you have been taking an iron supplement but you are worried it's not doing the job.
