For horse pills, you can crush them between 2 spoons and they're easier to

swallow. As far as water, because I take diuretics, I have to drink water with

anything I take or eat or the pills/capsules will stick to my throat like a

wet sucker to a wool sweater.

Depends on the supplement, that's why you get confusing messages:

If the supplement is a food (Vitamins and minerals), then yes it works

well with food, and can even matter what food. For example calcium needs

fat present to absorb but magnesium needs absence of fat to absorb. Oil

soluble vitamins need fat present to absorb (Vit A, D, E, K).

Water-soluble vitamins need liquid to absorb. Magnesium and Vit B6 have

a relationship and each helps absorb the other. So it would be good to

take Vit B6 and Mg together - in the nonfat meal.

Vit C only lasts 4 hours before excretion so it is better to take it

often than all at once.

So for vits and minerals, in summary it's good with food, and A,D,E,K

and calcium need fat present - that's a good rule of thumb for vits and

mins.

For non-food supplements they often absorb better on an empty stomach to

avoid getting digested by digestive juices. For example the supplement

Moducare contains plant sterols and sterolins easily destroyed by the

wrong digestive juices. And if you take slippery elm syrup to avoid

indigestion it needs to coat the intestine before you eat, so 20 mins

before eating is a good time to take it to give it a head start over the

food.

So for non-food supplements, each has its own needs and you are wise to

check the bottle. What I do is have a supplement shelf, and I put the

items in groups. One group for eating with fatty food, one for eating

with nonfat food or tea, and one for between meals. Makes it easier as I

don't have to think :-) In my case I take 45 electrolyte pills on

prescription and my supplements start after that so anything I can

devise to make it easier is good :-) I am trying to perfect the art of

pilling, and it seems they need a lube job :-) When I have a lot to

swallow, I start with a teaspoon of olive oil for some advance lube.

I also like my pills with food preferably. The ones not with food slip

down better if you lubricate them with butter or some such and swallow

with something liquid. Also I find it helps to put liquid in the mouth

first then add the pill. (Personally I find warm tea better than cold

water.) It's that dry sticky gelatin cap that does the sucker on a wool

sweater thing Max describes so very well, as soon as the moisture in

your mouth hits it :-))

Irene
