I am sorry that you have to go through all of those test again. I think it is normal though, everyone wants " their " own tests done for some reason. Hope things improve for you very soon. You have so much in your record that I'm sure fifteen minutes wouldn't be long enough! When was your cholesterol alarmingly high last? How high? What med were you (or are you) taking for it and for how long? I know you don't want to go through an ERCP and ultrasound again, but I think this doctor is right not to trust the results of the previous procedures. He's got to start fresh and start there. I'm sorry, but at least you know that he is going to be thorough. What did he say about all the drugs and the possibility that they caused or contributed to your problem? So far, he sounds the most promising. I really hope that he can figure this out! Sorry about the receptionist. Guest guest Posted March 3, 2001 Report Share Posted March 3, 2001 Hello My Friend, My cholesterol was well over 300. Very high for someone who doesn't eat meat, dairy, fried foods. I found out about it three, three half years ago. I was on Zocor. I gave up soda to bring down the sugar factor. I was able to get it down to 160,170 which we were very happy about. When I got sick and couldn't eat it went too low. So probably when I am well it will go back up to over two hundred. It is a serious problem in my family. My son was only 19 and his was over 900. I change all my childrens diet because I knew it would only get worse for them. The goal was to try and teach them to eat right but eat the high cholesterol foods in moderation. It worked with all of them but the one with the diagnosed problem. He and his wife just eat and eat whatever. Even his-in-laws think I'm crazy. Last year for his b-day they gave him a sausage maker, this year a deluxe frier. They give it too him in front of me, but not one word leaves my mouth. He should be man enough to take care of his health problems, he is 31. I have done all I can do with him. So whatever happens I will there for him, but I will know it was out of my hands. His cholesterol was so bad, his liver was encased in it. There comes a time when you have to let go. On the other hand she married him knowing his health problems, she should help him with it, instead of letting her parents and her self encourage his bad habits. He was only mildly interested in the drug issues. He doesn't feel it play a part in any of it. I will not take the clinoril again, and I will do without the prilosec until something is settled. He wants me back on the fosamax, metho. I will ask the Rheumy again for it in injection. Plus the other drugs I take which I know I do need. Right now I don't need the blood pressure medicine. It is so crazy when I am in the hospital and for a week or two after I come my blood pressure is very low and then shoots up. Doctor this happens to a lot of people. The receptionist will be so angry on Monday, but I don't want to miss the mid-term. I think if I have another attack the best thing for me to do is go to the U. of P.. I'm happy with this doctor but still concerned. I will say one thing he listened to me and was willing to discuss what I was saying.\ Are ya ready for some more snow. I took my mom to the store, it is a zoo. We probably won't get anything. Sometimes I think the news shows (weather) and food stores are partners. Hope you are happy a good pain free day. I'm sorry you have to repeat all the tests, but try to have faith that these tests will tell your doctor what is going on. What is with the office staff at these doctor's offices? Your midterm is very important to you, and I don't understand why they can't understand that and schedule your appointment around them. I know you mentioned that it was a problem for you before, but I had no idea that it was that high. Your son worries me. That is some in-law problem, too. I just don't understand why some people act like that. Oh, well. You're right, he is an adult now. Not much you can do but try to support him when he needs you. It must be hard. Sorry. It will be interesting to see what this new doc can come up with. Try not to worry. So far, he sounds very good. Let him go through one step at a time. I would be so relieved if he actually finds a stone. I'm glad he isn't thinking that it is the drugs since he is putting you back on some! Don't worry about the receptionist. She is out of bounds if she is trying to give you a hard time about rescheduling. Brother! You could really write a book by now. We haven't had snow for a couple of weeks now (not much anyway). While I have not been able to post often, I have been following your horrible experience and have been very concerned about the way you have been treated. It sounds like you are on the right track with a good doctor now. I know that repeating procedures is difficult but it is standard in a situation like this and he just may find the stone that was missed before. I hope that you can now get answers, feel better and get back to school and living your life. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Guest guest Posted March 4, 2001 Report Share Posted March 4, 2001 Hi , You know since I have joined this board, I have been following your ordeal & I keep thinking back to what happened to me about 12 years ago. After I had my gallbladder removed 6 weeks after my first daughter was born, I continued to have problems with abdominal pain & abnormal lab tests. I was in & out of the hospital so much, with endoscopies, ercp's motility tests, nuclear tests, every test in the book & they would think they saw something, then the next time it happened, it wasn't there. This went on for 6 years. Finally it came to head & a change of doctors when one summer I couldn't keep anything on my stomach & I was at home receiving IV fluids to at least keep my hydrated. At that time, the doctors here in Florida were stumped & my GI doctor sent me to University of Chicago (this was after two visits to the University of Miami). While at U of C, they did all the same tests themselves to get their own results even though I came with a ton of my own records. It was then concluded that I was passing sludge thru the bile duct & it would not clear thru the duct. So they went via ERCP to the duct & did a sphincterotomy (sp) to keep this duct open. After which, like you, I promptly developed pancreatitis. But knock on wood, it did seem to help the problem. Now my only abdominal problems are scar tissue & ulcers, but that is another story. I don't think we have the same problem, but every time I read one of your posts, it takes me back to that time. I sure hope this is the end of a long hard road that you have traveled to get answers. The problem is that it can cause liver damage so I must take a blood test every three months to keep it checked. He was on a few different drugs and had to be tested for liver damage. His wife got him to go to another doctor. He should be on medicine. Actually, he had lost a lot of weight and his cholesterol was doing good. By true to form he went off the medicine and gained all the weight back. There is nothing I can do, I had hoped his wife would have taken better care of him. She is extremely heavy girl, I'm talking 300 pounds, so she is not going to work with him. Regardless, he should take care of himself, I always had to force him to stay on his diet. I hate it, my son told no doctor would take another doctors work and that is just how it is. I am going to postpone the procedure for Thursday, so I guess next week it will be done. I just know I will be made to stay in the hospital. What I don't understand is I have had three ERCPS and an endoscopic untrasound, and no one found any stones. I guess I will just have to wait and see. How are you feeling? I can't remember where you live. Are you getting this snow storm? Right now it has just started and it is ice. Schools are already closing. Hope you have a nice pain free night. I will have to call tomorrow to cancel the procedure for Thursday, hope I don't get her. What an attitude!!!!!!!!!!!! We are getting sleet here and the schools have already closed for tomorrow. I am so glad. If the doctor doesn't find anything with his ERCP, he told me he will run them every 6 months. I'm not happy but we will see. It is also the best place in the world to live. Right now, out weather is better than most of you are having but that is unusual. They have looked for stones and gravel, so far nothing. I note is so good, it sounds so like me. They tell me my gallbladder is fine, very small and slow but nothing wrong with it. My problem is scar tissue in the bile duct. I think if he doesn't find anything he will put the stent back in. Please tell more about this and the bile duct. All along I have been asking about an ulcer, they say there isn't one. My aunt told me sometimes they can not find them. You have brought me some relief, it is always interesting to find someone, who may have something similar. I am very interested what has happened to you. Do you still have a stent? They told me a lot of people live with stents being put in and taken out. My best friend lives in Montana, and she told me, we have more snow than she does. I use to love the winter before Ra. Sometimes though I feel that the humidity is worse than cold. I also mentioned how the receptionist treated me. She wanted her name but I don't like to do that, she said fine and does she look like this. She did and they have been having complaints about her, so I guess she is in a little trouble. Isn't bad enough that you don't feel well, I see no reason you have to put up with someone being rude too. If people were not sick she wouldn't have a job. Now being me, I feel bad that I reported her. Since I stopped the prilosec the heartburn is awful. I can put up with this, I just don't want to go back to the hospital. Are you taking any courses on line? I think is all that keeps my sanity. I have taken summer classes and that is a challenge. I wish I could do it but I know what would happen. I am getting very nervous about Tuesday. I am hoping for a blizzard or something. I just hate going through all that again. I wish there was an easier way. I don't know if he will put in another stent or not. The heart burn has been so bad, I just couldn't get rid of it. It was all day, so I went against my better judgement and took the prilosec. So far everything is okay. They told me I could take that it had nothing to do with what was happening. Tomorrow I see the primary and I am taking all that lynn found about the drugs. How are you and doing? I hope rested up from your trip. I am dreading Friday for the knee surgery & the rehab that goes along with that all over again. Now about my GI trouble, it all began when I had my gallbladder removed 6 weeks after my oldest daughter was born. When they went to remove the gallbladder from my body through the old 10 inch incision, they spilt the contents of the gallbladder in the abdominal cavity. After that, it caused all sorts of trouble including pancreatitis, hepatitis inability to hold food down. I could go a few weeks & then it would get so bad that I would be put in the hospital for IV fluids & more tests. This went on for a number of years. They would do numerous endoscopies & ERCP's & would find the usual ulcers & occasionally bile but the lab tests could never " catch " the phenonomen. My gallbladder was seriously inflamed when I went to surgery & they felt that they should have removed the bile duct with the gallbladder but this wasn't determined until after the surgery. In fact, the surgeon said he should not have operated until the gallbladder had " cooled " down. I went to several GI specialists throughout south Florida & even the University of Miami. They all said the same thing, the ERCP showed some bile but they could not document this with any lab tests. So I was always sent home with their hands thrown in the air---I don't know......Finally, the one GI doc said that I needed to go somewhere they really do research on this & he suggested Mayo Clinic. My two youngest daughters were only 2 at the time & I would have had to stop in Chicago to leave my daughters with my family, when the doc heard this, he said that the University of Chicago had an excellent GI department & he was more than happy to send me there for further work-up. This was after a whole summer of IV fluids at home to avoid dehydration & the frequent hospital trips. I had a nurse who would come in & do the IV set up & give me Tigan 200mg IM every 8 hours. This was performed while my oldest daughter was 8 & the two young ones were 2. A young Mom with an IV pump toting around the house with a baby on each hip was a pretty sad sight!!!!!!!! When we got to the University of Chicago,I was seen by the chief, Dr ph Kirsner who was a year older than dirt, but the best in the country. In fact, he trained Dr Hanauer who treated I think 's sister in law. He ran every test that could possibly be thought of & after reviewing all the data presented, the decision was made to do the endoscopic sphincterotomy so that as the bile & sludge would come through,it would not be stopped at the sphincter. Once the spincter was kept open all the time, the nausea & vomiting should stop & my stomach should settle down was their theory. I was told at that time that this kind of procedure is only done at a major University. So I never did have a stent, just this procedure which made the problem better, not gone completely, but to a point where I could keep food down & continue somewhat of a normal life. I am once again having similar problems with my GI tract & they think that perhaps the sphincter has closed with scar tissue & needs to be reopened again, but I am trying to talk myself out of this scenario. I am trying to convince myself that the GI trouble is due to the medication that I am taking for the other conditions. God, , I sure hope that Tuesday's visit gives you the solution to your problem that you so desperately need. This is no way for anyone to have to live. I will keep you in my prayers & thoughts & God's blessings. Hang in there, honey...... I really think this doc is going to be your light at the end of this lousy GI tunnel. My docs never should have let me so many years with that problem. I even went thru a pregnancy with it. I was hospitalized twice because I had dehydrated & was kept 23 hours for IV fluids for the protection of the pregnancy. Then at 6 mos gestation, my adopted daughter had a flu virus of some type that I caught & it settle in my appendix & I had to have an appendectomy with no guarantees to the health of the baby. So even then,my immune system was not quite right. My youngest daughter was born healthy but what a pregnancy. My two youngest daughters are 8 mos apart. We adopted the one at 3 weeks old & then I found out I was pregnant with twins. I lost the one twin at 7 weeks gestation & the other one I was able to carry to term after all those complications........So ya see, we have been thru it all....lousy docs, tummy trouble, RA, etc, etc, etc. we can do this too !!!!! Tuesday you will have so many people with you in heart & spirit, that you will wonder what all the fuss was about. BUT you listen to those docs, if they tell you to stay, STAY, that is final !!!!!!!!!! Love ya, honey & hand in hand & heart to heart we can conquer anything!!!!!!! I read your note over and over, because it sounds like me. I have the stricture you are talking about. I feel so awful when I eat, that I don't eat bother a lot of the time. My son told me to be prepared for them putting in another stent. At least this doctor is listening to me, and kept me on the anti-biotics. They have checked my gall-bladder three times and it is fine. They said it is very small but not diseased. That is good but not an answer. I can't tell you how much relief there is in knowing someone else has the same or similar thing. When I first joined this group, I felt so isolated. No one in my family has RA, I don't even know anyone with it. I came here and found people with the same problems, but I also found the nicest, caring, and understand people anyone could ever meet. You will be in my prayers on Friday. I will let you know how I make out on Tuesday. If I don't chicken out by then. I have told my son he is not to leave me at the hospital. However, if the doctor says stay he will leave me. My arms are so sore from all the IV. I have three veins that are all swollen up, I guess they were blown. I can't thank you enough for your note. How long do you have to take physical therapy? Physical therapy is a bad point for me. I had a therapist who I know did me in. She was working on the original problem with my neck. I don't think she knew what she was doing, when I started having problem opening and closing my hand she ignored it. It was the start of the RA, she should have realized what was going on. I am dreading tomorrow so much, I get chills thinking about it. If he doesn't find anything that is good, but it leaves me with getting a stent put in and out all the time. I don't know how many more ERCPS I can do. Your notes have been a big help or is always easier to deal with all this when you find someone who has had the same problems. I was weaned to a lower dose of prednisone from up to 80mg to 5mg. I was also on a higher dose of Azathioprine (generic for Imuran) from 75mg to 50mg. Now I'm also on Neoral (cyclosporine) & urso for PBC. I'm on a lot of other meds for other systemic autoimmune diseases. I developed adverse effects from prednisone. I've been on it since May'94 . There is no reasom for this type of treatment and Tzakis the treansplant head would be horrified if he felt one of his patients felt treated badly...there staff there is not allowed to treat people that way (not that it doesn't happen) Based on how you feel I wouldn't mind excerpting your statement without your name and sending it to them so they can see how we perceive the experience... What do you think? You deserve better and I know they are capeable of it! Patty (also transplant Miami 4 years ago) [ ] Saw the " specialist " I finally got to see my doc. in Miami. You know, the one that's supposed to know everything. I'm irritated because he made me feel like I'm crazy and even asked me if I was seeing a psychiatrist. I wanted to smack him. I told him I was still feeling a lot of fatigue and flu like symptoms. Especially when I lower my prednisone. He told me it was impossible. Did you know that you can't feel bad while lowering your prednisone? I know I'm not the only one here that has felt that way. All my blood work is in the normal range which I'm extremely grateful for but I still don't feel good. When the assistant pressed on my liver I about went throught the roof. I got nauseaus and it hurt the rest of the day. When the doc was told that he did decide that maybe he should go ahead and do a laproscopic liver biopsy. The thing I really don't want to do. He said a may have a fatty liver. Why did I practically have to throw up on him to make him realize I'm not making this stuff up. He said that the fatigue could be related to my diabetes which I know is true. He was just so condescending to begin with. I hate it when they do that. He thinks I should be back to work. Meanwhile my endocronologist and rheumatologist say I have no business trying to work right now. I would love to be able to work. God knows I could use the money. I feel like I'm being a load. I hear people here talking about still working and they seem to be much sicker than I am. My blood sugars are also go crazy sometimes. He tried to tell me that I needed a new endo. if she can't keep me regulated because lowering the pred. wouldn't cause that. BULL SH*T. Maybe what I need is a new hep. doc. He's not like this normally. Maybe he was just having a bad life. I'm really scared about the lap. biopsy. I'm lowering my pred. to 2.5 mg. one day and 5 mg. the next for a couple of weeks and then down to just 2.5 mg. Then he will do it. He said 5 or 6 wks. BLAH!
