Stay out of the dark -- it's bad for your health. Going into it also

annoys friends and coworkers.

But if you do go, order the cheese blintzes -- I've heard they're

excellent.

No more e-mail about darkness, PLEASE.

Anybody cure anything lately?

I think you are absolutely right, . Darkness that you are aware of, you

can keep in check. It's when we are unaware that it can easily take over and

make us do things we later regret. Especially when we delude ourselves that

it's not darkness at all; that we are doing something good by warring

against this or that - the recent suicide bombings being a typical example.

Causing pain, suffering or death to others (or ourselves, for that matter)

is almost always bad (though, as always, there may be rare exceptions to

this general rule).

Okay, I can understand that, I think - but is it more dangerous for

someone to deny they even have a dark side?

Surely it is safer to admit to it and have the choice - like you

mentioned choice - I believe everyone has choices to some extent -

but some deny that even parts of themselves exsist or can exsist

(sp?) - if this makes sense?

Well described. I agree.

Re: True fai...

We all have a dark side and that is why most religions exist, to help us contain it. While it is best to cultivate the light side, we still need the dark side.

Dark side is also something of a nebulous term. There are many aspectsof ourselves that could be both light or dark, and I think the problem is one of semantics, specifically the lack of precise definitions. Take anger. Anger can be constructive. If you use anger to overcome a problem without say resorting to violence or harming others but yet achieving a positive outcome: like the families who fought to get something done about the "Love Canal" pollution incident. On the other hand, bad use of anger would be attacking someone over a ridiculous point, like who's sports team was better.

Selfishness is another. If you were to help others out of a selfish desire to feel good about yourself, that is still a positive outcome. On the other hand, if you indulged your seflishness by defrauding others out of their money, then that would be a bad thing.

Also, I think the dark side can help in other ways. It can help us as a sounding board for ideas and options for problems. That way we can see both the good and the bad options and make a choice. The dark side can also help in tough situations. It can help us protect ourselves if we are attacked, or to abandon others in a survival situations (like leaving a trapped stranger or even friend in a burning building if we could escape but that windown was about to close.) We wouldn't like doing it, but it was that or die ourselves.
