Guest guest
My 13 year old is going to have surgery this year, but I I had major surgery a couple of years ago. I would strongly suggest you rent a hospital bed for a few weeks, or if that is impossible, sleep on a comfortable couch or a guest bed without your hubbie. You will not be able to tolerate his tossing and turning, an a small bed that's easier to get out of will be MUCH easier for you. Best of luck. na More surgery planning questions Hello everyone. That haircut thing has made me start thinking about all the other little things one should consider before undergoing major back surgery. One thing I have thought of is about coming home and sleeping in bed with my husband - he is heavy, and even now when he tosses & turns at night, my back sometimes smarts a bit from the bouncing (maybe " bouncing " is an exaggeration, but he is big enough that if he flops around, I feel it thru the mattress). Would any of you who were married or otherwise partnered with a bigger-type person at the time of your surgery have any comments about sleeping arrangements immediately post-surgery? Also, speaking of husbands, I'm not picturing mine as being much of a home health aide during my recuperation, and I am wondering if any of you found it necessary to use any type of after-care facility after discharge from the hospital after surgery? Or is one's physical condition upon discharge from flatback revision such that you can putter around and do basic things for yourself if no one else is around? thanks, mary b
Guest guest
Hi B, After my revision surgery I stayed in a hospital bed for about 4-6 weeks. Don't really remember how long. My husband is not a big guy but the surgeon thought it was necessary making it easier for you to get in and out of bed. Remember you will be pretty weak for a while. As far as help goes, I had my mom and my husband. My mom stayed for about 5 weeks. If your husband can't help to much, you will need to look to have someone to help you for a while. Kathy H. Wow! What health plan let you stay in the hospital that long? Sign me up! I got booted out after a week, and they wouldn't even let me go to a rehab/nursing home place. I had only my teenage son to help, and I finally had to stay with my mom, who had a home health aide, since she had Parkinson's, and could help me. Actually, you can get out of bed fairly quickly, they want you to, so you don't get pneumonia, but you need help getting in and out of the bathtub, changing clothes, etc. in Oakland > >
Guest guest
Dear , You misunderstood what I said. I had a hospital bed at home. I didn't stay in the hospital for 4 to 6 weeks. Most insurance plans will pay for a hospital bed if ordered by your doctor. By the way for my revision surgery I was in the hospital for 2 weeks, didn't go to rehab because I had help at home. Guest guest
OIC. I had a hospital bed in the 60's, when they put casts on you and made you stay in bed for several months. But in 2000 and this year, I was sent home to my regular bed, with no help, no rehab. My individual Kaiser plan doesn't offer much coverage, they didn't cover the brace, or a cane, or anything like that. And my co-payments were 200 a month. I " m paying $400 a month, and have to pay $25 per office visit. When ran out of Cobra, this was the only plan I could get, because every broker I called asked if I had had surgery in the past 5 years. Unfortunately, I have to answer yes. They told me the premiums would be much higher than $400 a month. I sure wish they would let you buy into Medicare at age 50 or whatever that plan Kerry referred to, or the one where you could get the same great care that Senators and Legislators in Wash.
