At the back of the 2nd edition of Iodine, Brownstein has a number of new case studies. One of them involves "Shirley", a 69-year-old woman who is very sensitive to medications and supplements. He starts her on a low dose of Iodoral (6.25 mg = 1/2 tab). Eventually, even that is too much and he changes her to microgram doses of iodine in the form of Atomidine three days per week. Quote follows. Zoe

"Shirley, at 69-years-old, is very sensitive to medications and supplements. She also happens to be my mother-in-law.

"Shirley was on 6.25 mg/day of iodine/iodide (Iodoral) to help treat many hypothyroid symptoms including cold extremities, hair loss, dry skin, and fatigue. All of her symptoms improved significantly with taking thyroid hormone due to the positive effects of the iodine.

"Approximately four months after starting the iodine regimen, Shirley developed palpitations. Now, having your mother-in-law develop palpitations is not a good thing. The palpitations ceased after two days without the iodine.

"Shirley was instructed to take microgram doses of iodine in the form of Atomidine (Edgar Cayce's iodine formulation) three days per week. Since reducing her dose, all of her hypothyroid symptoms have improved and she is not having palpitations.

"Shirley's case is very rare. I have only had to use microgram amounts of iodine three times over the last 3.5 years. This has only occurred in patients extremely sensitive to nearly everything."

----------- end of case study

"The above cases illustrate that every patient needs to have an individualized treatment plan. Those that are sensitive to medications may need a lowered dose, and may need to titrate their dose of iodine. If one is deficient in iodine, it is rare not to be able to find an appropriate dose to improve the clinical condition."
