Guest guest Posted June 26, 2006 Report Posted June 26, 2006 Something like this: http://wwwchem.csustan.edu/chem1112/1112VITC.HTM The amount of ascorbic acid can be determined by a redox titration with a standardized solution of iodine. The iodine is reduced by the ascorbic acid to form iodide. As shown in the other half of this redox equation. Iodine and Iodide are different colors. Course if I'm reading this right, it might also mean your ascorbic acid isn't doing you any good with the iodine in it. http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives/dec96/850885099.Ch.r.html To test for ascorbic acid you will need iodine, cornstarch, and water. Put 1/2 teaspoon of starch and 1 cup water in a pan and heat and stir it until it is dissolved. Put one teaspoon of this solution, 1 cup of water, and four drops of iodine solution in a jar. This final solution should be blue in color. Put two tablespoons of this solution into a cup or bowl. Then add 1 drop of juice to the bowl. If the solution becomes clear, ascorbic acid is present. If the solution is still blue, it is not. To test for various concentrations of ascorbic acid, vary the amount of juice or solution. The reason why this works is the following: Iodine binds to starch. When it binds to starch, the complex is purple. Iodine binds to ascorbic acid. When it binds to vitamin C, it is colorless. Iodine binds more strongly to ascorbic acid than it binds to starch. The iodine, therefore, would leave the starch and bind to ascorbic acid, which would make the blue solution become clear. Quote
Guest guest Posted June 26, 2006 Report Posted June 26, 2006 So if I'm getting this right, the iodine was changed to iodide which I should still be able to digest and absorb. That's great, Thanks Heidi! > > Something like this: > > http://wwwchem.csustan.edu/chem1112/1112VITC.HTM > > The amount of ascorbic acid can be determined by a redox titration with > a standardized solution of iodine. Guest guest Posted June 26, 2006 Report Posted June 26, 2006 But if this is true, it negates the I2 and all the values of iodine vs. iodide. This is not good.... Zoe So if I'm getting this right, the iodine was changed to iodide which Ishould still be able to digest and absorb. That's great, Thanks Heidi! Quote
Guest guest Posted June 26, 2006 Report Posted June 26, 2006 Yes, I agree. I won't be doing it again but nice to know it was not a wasted iodine day... Guest guest Posted June 26, 2006 Report Posted June 26, 2006 So, is it my understanding we shouldn't take vitamin C with our Lugol's? Love, Pamelasharflin <sharflin@...> wrote: Yes, I agree. Guest guest Posted June 26, 2006 Report Posted June 26, 2006 Yes, Sharon, it was fun to stumble onto a science experiment. But this may have a lot of ramifications for all of us. But I am wondering what happened to all the Iodoral I took for four months. I always add Vit C to my water, and I took the Iodoral with that water. Did I negate all the benefits from the I2??? What about people who are taking their I2 with supplements that include Vit C? What about with foods? This seems like a very important issue for all of us -- especially those who are taking I2 for breast issues. I have written to Jack Kessler to ask him more about this. I'll let you know if I learn anything. We should probably check with Abraham, too. Zoe Yes, I agree. I won't be doing it again but nice to know it was not a wasted iodine day... Guest guest Posted June 27, 2006 Report Posted June 27, 2006 Dr. Brownstein has me taking 4,600 mg of Buffered Vit C Powder with my 50 mg of Iodoral. I would think that if there was an issue he would not have me taking them together. B.My Ebay Auctions: http://tinyurl.com/o9nqvLIKE SOY CANDLES? Guest guest Posted June 27, 2006 Report Posted June 27, 2006 Since Iodoral is a pill and is supposed to supposed to stay intact through the stomach, I think this would be less of a risk for the effect I observed. Those of us using liquids though may need to be more careful. Sharon > Dr. Brownstein has me taking 4,600 mg of Buffered Vit C Powder with my 50 mg of Iodoral. I always add Vit C to my water, and I took the Iodoral with that water. Did I negate all the benefits from the I2??? Sounds like hydrochloric acid will also dissociate I2. I recall Dr. Kessler saying that when I talked with him. That's why he only using his method of iodide delivery as it somehow keeps the I2 intact in the stomach. Keeping it intact was the goal for fibrocystic breast women. The coating on iodoral keeps it intact through the stomach so I guess keeping I2 bonded together was one of Abrahams goals. Iodoral in too large doses seems to wipe out my intestinal flora after a few days though. Lugol's doesn't do that. I'm only using 1 tab iodoral nowdays and drops of lugols for the rest. Anymore iodoral than that and constipation starts as I suspect my gut flora gets outa wack. Lynn Quote
Guest guest Posted July 2, 2006 Report Posted July 2, 2006 I have asked my biochemically sophisticated friends about taking Vitamin C and Iodine at the same time. Sounds like the two shouldn't be mixed in water before taking, but otherwise there is not a major problem. Here are some of the comments I received back. I especially appreciated the following comment: "I2 is like the juvenile delinquent of the iodine species; it never behaves." [Zoe] What happens when you consume I2 and ascorbic acid at the same time? [Answers] I can’t see any effect really. Supplements contain iodide. Iodide and ascorbic acid in water could interact to facilitate the oxidation of iodide into I2. Considering that the stomach is at a pH of 1.0 I don’t see any issue with taking both of these simultaneously. I don’t think there could be much of an issue with taking I2 and ascorbic acid at the same time. Ascorbic acid could react to some degree with I2 by iodination across the double bond or substitution of a hydroxyl but such reactions would have to compete with all of the other reactions in the stomach. [Zoe] If you mix together the I2 supplement and the ascorbic acid in water before consuming, there is still no problem? [Answer] I would not do that. If you want to take I2 then take it alone. I2 will react will most things and the mere exercise of mixing it in water without a cover will cause the loss of some I2 due to it’s vapor pressure. I2 is like the juvenile delinquent of the iodine species; it never behaves. Zoe Quote

He has his proprietary method . That's what the patent was for. I just posted my problem with iodine and my increasing breast pain using just lugols. I'm assuming my stomach acid is not allowing the I2 for in. Iodoral does work but another problems (constipation) results. Lynn Quote

Guest guest Posted July 2, 2006 Report Posted July 2, 2006 - > then you might combine Iodoral with Armour Hi Gracia....I do use armour or nature-thyroid. Just upped my dose by 1/2 grain with my last doc visit on Thurs. It's possible my breast pain was related to something else...these things are so difficult to tell. I've upped my levels of supplements and added zeolites so prehaps the iodoral has very little to do with the pain disappearance. I've been feeling really good on my new plan....until I got constipated! Thanks Lynn Quote
