Re: Sensitivity to iodine -- nuts, goitrogens, thyroid swelling, dulse, detox

Anne, I'm still trying to understand. One comment that puzzled me is "I think it is affected by goitrogen foods, e.g. if I eat too many raw nuts or seeds." I was not aware that nuts and seed are goitrogens, except for peanuts and pine nuts. Do you have reason to believe that other raw nuts and seeds are goitrogenic?

I am aware that raw nuts and seeds have enzyme inhibitors (unless they have been soaked) that create problems with digestion, but I don't know that they are goitrogenic.

I can certainly imagine that your thyroid might swell up sometimes, and it seems logical that that would be associated with hypothyroid symptoms. It seems logical that goitrogens could be involved.

You say that dulse can be detoxifying. What specifically does it detoxify? My understanding is that the levels of iodine in dulse are pretty low.

Again, you say that the ionic mineral supplement is very detoxifying. What is it detoxing? Is it detoxing the thyroid specifically? If so, of what? How?

It makes a lot of sense to me that you could be iodine deficient, especially with mercury and hypo problems.

Zoe

I'm just aware from time to time and more so recently that I can feel my thyroid. Its not pain, maybe it swells up, its difficult to describe, I just get a sensation in that area. I also get an increase in hypo symptoms, eg feeling cold, depressed. It doesnt happen every time and doesnt usually happen when I take armour (though it did a bit when I first started taking it). I think it is affected by goitrogen foods, eg if I eat too many raw nuts or seeds. Otherwise I avoid foods that irritate the thyroid.More recently I noticed it when I ate some dulse one day and some fish the next, though again this doesnt always happen. I know dulse can be detoxifying, but not fish.I also noticed it as soon as I took the ionic mineral supplement which is very detoxifying so it could have been that. Maybe my thyroid couldnt cope with the overload of toxins. I have been able to tolerate this particular supp in the past but that was before I did any mercury chelation. My instinct is that I'm very deficient in iodine and that its contributed to my mercury retention and thyroid problems. I have just received Iodoral but very hesitant to take it! I'm not optimised on armour yet and I'm not on serious adrenal support. I'm waiting for my hydrocortisone to arrive. I dont know Abrahams research well enough but my first reaction would be to agree about the oxidative damage, goitrogens and iodine deficiency being the problem. I did have a TPO test several months back and the result was something like 34 which was below the ref range of 50-300. The NTH group said this indicates autoimmune hashis ie any antibodies means hashis.Anne

Hi Zoe, sorry yes you are right, this is what I meant, the enzyme

inhibitor factor affecting digestion. Plus with me, the high amount

of fat in these foods slows down my already slow metabolism, which

seems to end up irritating my thyroid.

> You say that dulse can be detoxifying. What specifically does it

pretty low.

Interesting. I guess it depends where it comes from, I dont know the

specific iodine content of the dulse I've been eating. I've always

been under the assumption that all seaweeds, due to their high

nutritional content esp iodine, detoxify to some extent chemicals in

the body. I sometimes get reactions when I eat foods like this eg

blood sugar drops, thyroid feeling irritated. Anyway, its ok, not

expecting you to solve this or anything. It will be interesting to

compare with when I start taking Iodoral.

> Again, you say that the ionic mineral supplement is very

specifically? If so, of what? How?

All I know is that I have quite a strong reaction to it, eg decreased

energy (initially, following my big increase in energy), mental

confusion/foggy head, irritability/crying, blood sugar drops,

increased metal taste in mouth and my urine turns a greenish shade!

So presumably its detoxing something, maybe not metals, as it wouldnt

be considered a chelator as such. I really can't say for sure, I'm

just guessing.

I thought it may contain iodine but found out it does not.

Its highly absorbable so I assume it's competing with or pushing

out 'acids' or 'toxins' of some sort from the cells. Its interesting

how my thyroid feels quite irritated when I take it.

Yes definitely.

Thanks Zoe. I'll report back when I start on the Iodoral.
