Absolutely Lynne. No one wants to admit we've poisoned ourselves with chemicals in the air and water since before WW2, so they will continue to write pieces designed to confuse and scare people away from the very thing that might cure them. Lawsuits would be everywhere. Naturally inclined physicians noticed after WW2 that many had mineral deficiencies from all the excess radiation floating around the world from the A-bomb. Books like Silent Spring by Carlson were snubbed. Now the evidence is overwhelming as many of these persistent chemicals are in everybody's blood born on the planet. Our overall health is declining.

So what's an intelligent person to do....?

This is not to frighten anyone, but to state that all these "side-effects" of Iodine are really detox reactions that are to some degree unavoidable in a toxic individual. (I knew with my dental history that some facial swelling was going to be part of it. The same thing happened on herbals.) Knowing this, we could alleviate many of them by adding things that help the process along, rather than dragging out the inevitable misery. Lowering the dose and easing into more, so the body is not stressed, is one way, and for those not really sick, a wise way imo, as you have to function every day. Dr. Flechas told somebody with fibrocystic breasts it would take 2-3 years. People like me, already chronically suffering, .... moving things wisely forward is kinder. Someone with cancer may not have the luxury of 3 years. And I believe certain products are more appropriate than others for specific conditions. These are the issues that need defined, and why we are all here. Some things I've collected ..... tls

Iodine Allergy...?

www.radiology.ucsf.edu/instruction/abdominal/ab_handbook/04-IodineAllergy.html

Our purpose is to show that iodine does not confer a specific cross-reactivity between iodine-rich substances, that the cross-reactivity that does exist is nonspecific, and that the concept of iodine allergy is fallacious and may result in the inappropriate nonuse of IV contrast material in patients intolerant of antiseptics or seafood that contain iodine.

From a review of the published data, it soon became evident that medical textbooks contain several vital pieces of misinformation about the essential element iodine, which may have caused more human misery and death than both world wars combined... The authors concluded: "These data lead us to question the view that iodide and iodine are essentially interchangeable." ... The toxic side effects of organic iodine containing drugs are caused by inorganic iodide. There is a lot of misinformation in the medical literature concerning the safety of the different forms of the element Iodine. The inorganic forms are blamed for the severe side effects of the organic iodine-containing drugs... the cytotoxic effect of amiodarone is due to the entire molecule and not to the iodine present in it... The organic iodine-containing compounds, whether occurring naturally or manmade, have properties distinctly different from inorganic iodine/iodates/iodides... Diatomic iodine (I2) can be absorbed through the lungs and through the skin.18, 19 However, ingested food, drinks and iodine/iodide supplementation, are the most common means of supplying iodine to the human body. Without interfering substances present in the gastrointestinal tract, inorganic iodine, iodates, and iodides are quantitatively absorbed. The elimination of peripheral inorganic iodide occurs almost exclusively through renal clearance.20 Organic and inorganic iodine are not cleared by the kidneys... evidence that the iodine present in the food and drink of these subjects is highly bioavailable.... "These data indicate that iodine supplementation is the causal therapy for iodine-deficient goiter because it abolishes not only hypertrophy, but also hyperplasia of the glands and restores normal function and regulation." ...Recent investigations on this autoregulatory effect of iodine on cell proliferation suggest that it is due to iodinated lipids... reported a better response from patients with fibrocystic disease of the breast when inorganic iodine was used, compared with organic iodine and inorganic iodide... that the thyroid gland preferentially concentrates iodide whereas the mammary gland favors iodine. ... skin, like the thyroid gland, has a preference for iodide. ...Iodotherapy in thyroidectomized rats reversed the effect of hypothyroidism on growth, on the adrenal glands, the ovaries, testicles, and thymus. ... Extrathyroidal hyperthyroidism with exophthalmia has been reported in patients with leukemia.... The essential element iodine modulates the adrenal response to stress44 and improves immune functions.... Certain roles of iodine in well-being and protection against infections, degenerative diseases, and cancer may not involve its action on specific organs and tissues. Instead, such properties, affecting every cell in the human body, may depend on iodine/iodide concentrations in biological fluids.... The DNA repair mechanisms are efficient in preserving biological activity but highly mutagenic in mammalian cells.48 Intake of iodine/iodide at 50 mg/day would decrease the oxidative burden and DNA damage. ... An overview of the available data suggests that, for optimal function of the human body, peripheral inorganic iodide levels between 10-6M to 10-5M are required -- levels two to three orders of magnitude greater than the level of 10-8M observed in the US population... sufficiency was not achieved in some subjects even after two years of iodine supplementation at 1-2 tablets/day. To achieve sufficiency within three months, most subjects required 3-4 tablets/day (37.5-50 mg). ... Whole body sufficiency for iodine correlated well with overall well-being, and some subjects could tell when they achieved sufficiency even before knowing the results of the test. Iodine sufficiency was associated with a sense of overall well-being, lifting of a brain fog, feeling warmer in cold environments, increased energy, needing less sleep, achieving more in less time, experiencing regular bowel movements, and improved skin complexion. In some overweight or obese subjects, orthoiodosupplementation resulted in weight loss, decreased percent body fat, and increased muscle mass. ... The goal of orthoiodosupplementation is not the treatment of disease, but the supply of optimal amounts of an essential nutrient for whole body sufficiency and for optimal mental and physical performance.

About the Author Guy E. Abraham, MD, is a former Professor of obstetrics, Gynecology and Endocrinology at the UCLA School of Medicine. Some 35 years ago, he pioneered the development of assays to measure minute quantities of steroid hormones in biological fluids. He has been honored as follows: General Diagnostic Award from the Canadian Association of Clinical Chemists, 1974; the "Medaille d'Honneur" from the University of Liege, Belgium, 1976; the Senior Investigator Award of Pharmacia, Sweden, 1980. The applications of Dr. Abraham's techniques to a variety of female disorders have brought a notable improvement to the understanding and management of these disorders. Twenty-five years ago, Dr. Abraham developed nutritional programs for women with premenstrual tension syndrome and post menopausal osteoporosis. They are now the most commonly used dietary programs by American obstetricians and gynecologists. Dr. Abraham's current research interests include the development of assays for the measurement of iodide and the other halides in biological fluids and their applications to the implementation of orthoiodosupplementation in medical practice.

The principals in the iodine movement as well as user groups such as this are reexamining the concept of "Iodism" as it has been historically recorded in the source you cite. Please look up Guy Abraham's work on the Wolff-Chaikoff effect. And his notion of "iodophobia" which developed in the recent years post Wolff-Chaikoff.

A new paradigm about iodine is developing which questions the existence and extent of iodism. For some reason, that which would be called "dose-related adverse effects" from other forms of nutritional supplementation, is called "iodism" with iodine. It conjures up images of a permanent kind of "zombieism."

The doctors I have spoken to about the adverse effects all say cutting the iodine dose back will reverse the symptoms within 24-48 hours. That has been my personal experience and that of my colleagues as well. Since the theory is, it may take months if not years, for iodine to saturate the tissues through build-up, stopping temporarily then restarting has been a common practice among users if the adverse effects become troublesome.

Of course, none of us can advise, recommend or make suggestions to you about your iodine dosage, but it's clear you are concerned that you are taking too much to feel confident around your young child.

Please let us know how you proceed.

I think you may have been referring to me since I was complaining

about the headaches and trying to deal with a one year old...

I did email my doc (blends traditional and alternative), and he

replied to stop the iodoral immediately and see if the headaches stop,

and email him back in a few days.

I had already took one this morning, and the headache is coming right

on the 3 hour mark. I'll keep you posted.

I'm afraid you have me confused with Lynn to whom I was replying.

I do not have a child. Although I do get the frontal headaches

like her, I am not taking nearly as much iodine as the rest of you.

I only take 550 mcg from kelp over and above the 75% RDA in my multi.

I have also, as mentioned, had a few parotid gland " stones. "
