Guest guest
Hi, , you're only a very few days out. Protein is important, but in the first couple of weeks , many people can't get the 50-60 gm a day in that women need. I'd suggest getting some Osopure protein drinks from GNC - they are not bad-tasting, and have both good calories and good protein (you need decent calories to heal). The " Nectar " protein from online is also good. but milk and milk products are also good forms of protein - make puddings, drink the drinkable yogurt, eat regular yougurt, have some lower-cal ice cream. Are you on FULL liquids yet? If so, it's easy them - full loquids is ANY food blended smooth and thinned so you could get it through a straw. It's the CONSISTENCY that is impt, not the type of food. Blend and thin: -any meaty soup. those with beans too are ideal -any meaty spaghetti sauce - chili - refried beans - add some guacamole or salsa if you want, then blend - any canned meats (blend smooth, thin with broth - any canned or cooked fruit or veggie - any juice -any protein drink - put a tsp or 2 of creamu peanut butter into things - good protein (but high fat, so you'll want to have much less later) Just do the best you can. A few weeks of not entirely meeting the p;rotein needs is ok; you will do fine with it soon. Sandy R lots more! > > I had my lap-band done on the 18th. Guest guest
Forgot to say that I LOVE your optimism! :-) You said you were 290 the day of surgery 5 days ago, and 177 today! :-) :-) I know you probably meant 277 - but this is great! You'll get to 177 soon enough! Still, this is a pretty fasty drop, so dio be sure you're getting good calories in to heal A good goal for now would be about 2000 cal a day, but you may not be able to do that all quite yet. Guest guest
177 would be great. I forgot to mention heartburn. I seem to get this awhile after i eat, and also have a little at night. What do i take, i think it has to be liquid. also is " hi protein ensure good to drink " That probably does not taste to bad. Thanks Sandy <MoonshadowRN@...> wrote: Hi, , you're only a very few days out. Protein is important, but in the first couple of weeks , many people can't get the 50-60 gm a day in that women need. Guest guest
Ensure is not a very great choice. despite the TV ads, Ensure is geared toward medically ill people needing higher calories - so it is not meant for weight loss, and doesn't have great levels of protein. If you really need a protein drink (and you can easily get enough protein from the blended foods so you don't need protein drinks), GNC has several choices. And many of us - including me - think Unjury is the best-tastinf drink, plus good protein with lower-cals. you can get it online only at www.unjury.com The chocolate and valilla are excellent, haven't tried the fruit ones. The unflavored is also ok, but does not mix in hot things. Don't get a lot, becuase after you are back on soft foods, one of the most basic band rules is to AVOID all liquid calories - juices, protein drinks, milkshakes, sodas (diet or not), etc. No liquid works with the band-we want to use our " calorie quota " only for the foods that will fill us and meet nutrition needs. The only exception is nonfat milk - 1-2 glasses a day are ok, for the calcium. A bit of heartburn might be ok, but not much. Youi're still very new, and have a lot of stomach swelling that can cause the reflux thiat is heartburn. As you heal, the reflux should resolve completely. if it does not, it will need to be investigated. since the heartburn hurts the stomach and esophagus that are trying to heal, please call your band surfeon about it, and ask what med to use. common ones used for band reflux are nexium, prolosec, protonix, and OTC prevacid. All are good. These things are also impy, and some can ewncourage reflux, so stop them: - avoid citrus if you have reflux (OJ, tomato juice or sauces, coffee, tea, all caffeine). Coffee is not a great thing with the band (caffeine and acid) but most people can do ok with one cup a day. but since you have reflux, it would be good to stop it now, as it encourages reflux. - avoid drinking (or eating, later) within 2 hrs of bedtime. this encourages reflux. - avoid these foods that encourage reflux: mint, chocolate, spicy foods, - be sure to avpoid meds larger than an aspirin. They can get stuckk and csause damage and reflux. THis is a good rule forever, with the band. - avoid ANY meds at bedtime - take them one hour before with a glass of water to wash them completely thru the popuch , and rinse the pouch out. Did you get a fluoroscopy at the hospital after banding? This checks the band position. If you didn't, and the reflux consinues or worsens, a fluoro would e wise. A couple other thingd the docs sometimes forget to discuss: - VERY VERY good birth control. Any wt loss, even 10#, casues a big fertility increase, and there are lots of unexpected pregnancies that surely disrupt band loss for 12-18 mo. - a daily chewable multi vit - as all US adults need, banded or not. the chewable Centrums or generic forms are idea. chewable, so it is not too big. We don't need any other supplements if we are eating ok. And I meant ISOPURE, not OSIPURE. My typing is tererible, and my arthritis in my hands is bothersome and I can't type well. Please leet us know how you are doing - we care! Sandy R > > > > I had my lap-band done on the 18th. Guest guest
Hi, gang-- My 2 cents worth--Unjury has aspartame, which makes it a no-no in my book. Aspartame has been shown to increase insulin levels just like sugar does--or so I've been told ;-) I much preferred Wellements Pro Blend 55, as I could get almost all my protein in one shake. The chocolate fudge, blended with coffee, actually tastes decent (I'm not fond of Isopure either-0-another " delicate stomach, I'm afraid. I found the ProBlend on <VitaminShoppe.com> It comes either in a big container with 13 servings, or in handy single-serving bottles that you can add cold water to and shake. - > > Ensure is not a very great choice. despite the TV ads, Ensure is > geared toward medically ill people needing higher calories - so it is > not meant for weight loss, and doesn't have great levels of protein. > If you really need a protein drink (and you can easily get enough > protein from the blended foods so you don't need protein drinks), GNC > has several choices. The No comment on the aspartame or other artificial sweeteners. Don't know. However, if the product you describe has 55 grams of protein, it is probably a protein overdose. From what I've read and heard the body can't process more than 20-30 grams of protein at once, and the rest goes to the kidneys which aren't happy with that much excess. Besides, if you're on solid foods by now you should be getting all of your protein from solid foods, except for that coming from skim or lowfat milk. dan I'm thankful for those who are thankful for the things they've done....Arlington www.mylapband.tk or www.riverofdata.com Dan Lester, Boise, Idaho, USA Dr. Ortiz, Tijuana, 4/27/03 355/323/206/
Guest guest
Hi, Just thought I would share, that Lindora.com has cream soups with added protein (15g/per serving, I believe) and they taste OK. There is also a passion fruit drink that has 12 or 15g of protein that is actually very tasty. I put the protein infused soups in with my mashed potato's when I was on the full liquid and soft phases post op. Of course with the full liquid phase I thinned them down to the right consistency. I do get most of my protein, if not all from solid sources, but there are those odd days when I'm running around and need the extra protein, so I will have a cup of soup or a glass of passion fruit drink. I think if your having problems getting in enough protein it's better to supplement than not have enough. Of course you should also find out way you can't eat the protein and get it fixed (fill to tight, or your eating too fast, or too large of bites or could be too dry of food). Just my opinion.
