Dearest friend:

I went through much the same thing after my band was placed. My GERD was so

bad and I had heard many others saying that they stopped taking their

medication immediately after banding. I got a fill, then an unfill so often

I felt like I was on a VERY expensive roller coaster. You sound like you

need at least a small unfill and then stay on liquids for a few days. This

too will pass. It will get better, but you will have to use quite a bit of

will NOT power. I know it is crazy, but if you are too tight, you will gain

weight. If it is not full enough, you have to rely on yourself to watch your

diet. Only when it is perfect for you will it be the great help that we all

want.

Hang in there,

Lynn

Subject: not looseing weight

I have had my band since April 2007, at first I lost 24 lbs. Since Oct.

2007 I have put on 10 lbs. I am so discourage. I've excerise, I've

watch what I ate, and I have even tryed the band diet. I got so hungary

I started eating every thing in site. I have had 6 fills, since the

last fill, I am throwing up , food is getting stuck, and a burning

sencation when eating, plus my chest hurts all the time. I wished I

had gotten the gastric by pass, may be I would had kept the weight off,

who knows.I beat my self up every day this isn't working for me, or I

am doing something wrong.

Lynda, i'm sorry you're having trouble, but there is always a solution,

The first thing you need - and in the next 24-48 hrs MAX, please - is

an unfill. your band is too tight, and it is dangerous. The burning is

reflux, and it means your esophagus is being burned by the caustic

somach acid, and this is quite dangerous in several ways.

I'd like you to call your doc first thing in the morning and get an

unfill tomorrow.

In the meantime, please have only full liquids - no solid foods at all.

That is only making everything worse. Tonight, raise the head of your

bed 6 inches on blocks before you go to bed. This will reduce the

reflux at night, and help prevent the terrible aspiration pneumonia

that can occur. Do this until you get your unfill - which I really want

you to get tomnorrow, for safety.

After the unfill, have full lquids for 2 more days, to allow the stoma

to rest and heal; from the traumsa it's had.

then, we can suggest what to do at that point on.

The number of fills does not matter at all, but only if they are good

or not - and yours is too much at this point.

The bypass and all it's short- and longterm problems is really not the

solution, as most do not keep the weight off. The band has a much

better track record, as we learn the behaviors, eating, and lifestyle

changes that allow weight to stay off. I'm afraid the bypass people

don't, often, and then the weight comes back yet again. But i can sure

understand your disappointment at the moment. I'm sure we can help you

improve, once you're healed.

Let's have you get that unfill, heal, and then we can start to work

woith you on the things needed to do well again.

Can you tell us who your doc is, and how experienced he/she is with the

band? That will be a starting point for our teaching.

Good luck - please do be seen and unfilled tomorrow, before you get

into even worse trouble.

I agree, if sounds like you are too tight. The band should not be that

difficult to live with. I had a problem where I was too tight and let it go too

long due to some financial issues we were having. When I finally went to the

doctor, I had been overfilled for too long and caused a great amount of

irritation in my esophagus. Plus, I gained about 15 pounds because the only

thing I could keep down was ice cream. So, even though pre-band I was not an

ice cream eater, it soon became my best friend. I had to have a complete unfill

for six weeks. I went back last week finally and got a fill and now things are

back on track.

You definitely need to visit your doctor and make sure he/she really understands

all the problems you are having so the two of you can work together to resolve

them. Maybe you need to visit with a nutrionist as well to have your diet

assessed and see if it can be determined what areas can be improved on.

Have a great day!

So WHAT are you eating? It is still calories in vs calories out. You

must be eating " bad things " or lots of liquid calories if you're not

losing when you're that tight, possibly too tight. Or else you're

forcing yourself to eat after you should stop. If your food is

getting stuck, you're eating too large of bites, things that aren't

recommended, or eating too fast or too much (my bet on the last).

Glad you found out it is " just you " . Of course that's the toughest

part to fix. If you can let us know what you eat, when, how, why,

etc, we may be able to help more. Many of us have been " mindless

eaters " for years. Others eat because of stress or other emotional

issues. And many other reasons. I think I represent all of them.

You'll make it, and you'll help yourself by writing down ALL that you

eat and ALWAYS writing down what you were feeling/thinking/doing at

the time.

i think that the holidays are tough times for all of us. i had a

party to go to on sunday. i made a veggie platter with dip, but also

my favorite appetizer, wonderful cheese balls (with a grape inside)

-- that i love. of course i had to try them while i was making them.

i left the extras at my neighbors. my hope is that my lapses are

minimal....i know that they will always be there...just hope to get

over it fast and back on the track. sorry for my philosophizing today!!

I have been struggling this christmas with all the food around. For some reason

I thought I could make the massive amounts of chocolates I always do without

eating any of them. Why does my brain think this way, I have not been able to

withstand them in the past, what makes me think this year will be different,

they do after all go right through the band. I have given most of them away,

but there is still quite a few left. I am trying to get up the courage to just

throw them away, becuase noone in our family needs them.

I have decided not to bake this year, thats a step in the right direction. It

doesn't help that I need a fill, I have been able to eat things I know I

shouldn't like bread. Its not like I have gone hog wild eating stuff I

shouldn't, but the difference between losing weight and gaining weight is very

small, and I have gained weight this past month. By the way, cheese balls with

grapes sounds good. Its so easy to get caught up in all the partying and food

of Christmas, guess I just need to take a step back and remember the reason for

the season.

Here is what I do - don't know if it is 'right' or not but it seems

to work for me.

At my small office we get LOTS of gourmet food baskets from vendors.

There are only a handful of us in the office so our food baskets last

a very long time - lots of temptation. The entrance to the bathroom

is right off the kitchen and the food is all on the counter within

eyeball view. Since I know these are temptations that will plague me

the rest of my life I know I must find a way to incorporate these

times into my life.

1. I try not to eat ordinary treats like a hershey bar or birthday

cake. I save my 'treats' for the gourmet stuff. Every day I go to

the gourmet food on the counter and I 'plan' which piece of gourmet

chocolate I can have that day (knowing this is only holiday

indulgence's). When I REALLY REALLY want that piece of chocolate I

go and get it - pause for a moment while I truly enjoy that piece of

chocolate (or whatever food). I chew ooh so slowly, sucking the

deliciousness out of my little treat.

In the past I would wolf down a handful of chocolate (any kind) and

ponder wether I'd eaten anything cause I didn't really enjoy it or

remember it.

2. Yes I confess I'm an everyday weigher but it helps me keep my

treats in line. If I've gained a pound (yes I know its dependant on

hydration - time of day - clothes etc) I don't get my little holiday

gourmet treat that day.

3. I normally eat three small meals (small of course cause of the

band) and two snacks (just cause I like to eat) totally around 1200-

1300 calories a day. I omit one of the snacks to allow for at least

some of the calories in the holiday treat.

4. I know my little treat is empty calories and empty nutrition so I

make sure I'm eating the best I possibly can (ie every day with a

treat is day I absolutely cannot deviate from lots of protein and

vegetables and no other 'icky' carbs like potatoes or white crackers.

This might not be the 'right' way, but believe me - I enjoy looking

for - pondering the taste of - and savoring the flavor of any little

gourmet treat every day of the holiday season. It makes me feel like

I'm not deprived (well not food anyway) and it makes me extra mindful

of what I'm eating.

Oh....and I NEVER keep that stuff in the house - nor can I cook it or

bake it till I'm stronger mentally (maybe not even then) - I simply

don't have THAT MUCH willpower : )

Everything you're doing sounds fantastic to me. And as to will power,

don't count on ever having it perfectly. Because you're not perfect

ooh cookies!!!! i once brought home some wonderful cookies which i

knew my son loved. (at that time he was a body builder and personal

trainer and university student) he looked at them and me and

said, " Dad, those are the devil " .

they go down without resistance and are wonderful with ice cream.

That said, is that really where we want to go? IMO keep the

irresistables out of the house. or make up an acceptable portion for

yourself and keep it separate from the rest and commit to eating only

those. and pace yourself so you don't gobble them up too quickly

without savouring them.

since my banding (and believe me, i also have a snacking agenda) i

have found that savouring each bite goes a long way to helping me

achieve satisfaction. in the past, i vacuum'd what i was eating so

fast, i missed most of the pleasure, which always sent me back for

more. so now, a shortbread cookie, for instance, is eaten in very

small bites, chewed, rolled around in the mouth and i generally try

to extract as much taste out of each morsel as possible. it really

works to help limit the quantities i had become accustomed to

consuming.

i'm going again on a new year's bridge cruise to the caribean. i'm

really looking forward to it for a variety of reasons. but one

really good one is that when i'm away from home, i always lose weight

(since banding) because evening snack accessibility is dramatically

reduced. i think if i religiously stopped eating anything after 8

pm. i'd eventually disappear. (which i guess i'm going to do anyway,

but hopefully not for a long time. LOL)

Diane,

i'm a proponent of not denying yourself things you like to eat,

providing they aren't unfriendly to your band and that you won't lose

control over them.

this is the first time i've ever lost weight and not been on a diet.

so i eat everything that i feel is safe, but listen to my soft

signs. sometimes, i catch myself mindlessly putting something in my

mouth. i almost always catch myself and out it goes.

without beating a dead horse, this journey represents a lifestyle

change . it isn't a diet. and it requires constant vigilance (at

least for me, it does)
