Guest guest
HI My husband had dermatitis herpetiformis pretty badly at one time-he was put on a gluten free diet-but doctors said that wouldnt even help his particular type of dermatitis.. their usual protocol for this is a drug used for treatment of leprosy and its very dangerous. He opted not to take it-and his pharmacist agreed. We found something that helped get rid of it-castor oil. He very rarely has a breakout now and usually only if he is under stress. But I wasnt aware of the link to iodine-thanks for the info..its good to know. The breakouts are intensely itchy and burn - he said it feels like poison ivy.mwm1glm <mwm1glm@...> wrote: Is anyone here familiar with this or have this? I found this today:The rash is caused when gluten in the diet combines with IgA, andtogether they enter the blood stream and circulate. They eventuallyclog up the small blood vessels in the skin. This attracts white bloodcells (neutrophils), and releases powerful chemicals calledcomplements. They actually create the rash. Iodine is required for thereaction, so people with DH should avoid using Iodized salt.I developed a rash earlier in the week on my leg that was intenselyitchy. I do have gluten problems and have been on a GF diet sincethis past summer. I hadn't read anything about iodine and Celiac orgluten problems (or at least that I can remember offhand). Guest guest
Yeah, the IgA deposits that cause DH get triggered by iodine. They also get triggered by gluten ... which drove me nuts at first because I'd get DH outbreaks from foods I KNEW didn't have gluten. But they did have iodised salt. So I avoided iodine for years ... which caused other problems and eventually led me here! Sometimes I wonder though, if eating iodine finally causes the DH to get cleaned out. I don't react any more, even though I do eat a fair bit of iodine. Caladryl, BTW, which is a topical lotion with benadryl in it, killed the itching nicely for me. It's not dangerous at all AFAIK, plus it's good for mosquito bites. -- On 2/14/07, mwm1glm <mwm1glm@...> wrote: Is anyone here familiar with this or have this? Guest guest
I used some coconut cream that I had on hand from Tropical Traditions and it stopped the itching and it's starting to heal. I do think this may have been from gluten. I would think if iodine was going to trigger it, I would have seen it show up before now.
