Yes i agree Gracia, they are just covering their backsides legally,

Take anything out of your medicine cabinet and read the potential

side affects, but it doesn't stop most people popping a pill does it.

Look at the possible horrendous side affects on birth control inserts.

Iodine side affects seem mild in comparsion. Just to get some

prospective on this.

do well on 50mg/day. I also figured that some of the wording on the

insert protected them legally, considering the conventional view of

iodine.

Hi Sharon

Sometimes things get worse before they get better.

So a runny nose could be a good sign but on the other hand could mean

you are getting too much iodine. I'm a lot of help aren't i (lol).

See how it goes, i've got bad throat this morning, which could be

detox symptom or could be just the fact i'm going down with cold.

I get sinus and catarhal problems too but haven't noticed a

difference one way or another. Except if i eat cheese, which i love

or cows milk, which i do occassionally but makes problem worse.

LOL

this is just my theory but I think if a person is very deficient, the lower doses will just be aggravating. Higher doses will have better results.

I am waiting for Shomon to deal with this.

Gracia

No iodine for me. I feel ill within 2-3 days of supplementing any iodine. in fact I tried it again just recently with Lugol's...and no thank you...never again. I react like shoman has described...and CarolWillis here also has the same negative iodine reaction. Of course this is no surprise given the medical literature about possible adverse reaction to iodine for hashimoto's folks. But interestingly, I have none of the symptoms that folks talk about here that have been relieved with iodine. i sleep great...have good energy...and have no brain fog, etc. Cindi---

cindi,I seem to have most of the symptoms you mention, can you explain more about the "lump in throat?" is it an actual lump or a feeling of stress.achiness. What brought about your present acceptable stage? my worst complaint is being unmotivated and unproductive, I can barely move, everything is such an effort. are you on the NTH group as well? sandra cindi22595 <cindi22595@...> wrote: hmm...good question. a

brief background on me would say that my Hashi's really presented itself after childbirth at age 23...a few years of problems like lump in throat/sore throat, impetigo, allergies, leaking breasts, etc...then things settled down for a while. I was probably in that percentage of women who go on to experience full blown hypothyroidism (whatever that is) in the 10 years following a postpartum thyroid episode. Around my early 30s, my hashi's/hypo symptoms increased...and what I would say was that I was less productive than others my age. I used lots of coffee and No-Doz to get through the days during a lot of my 30s. I actually realized I was different than others and thought I had CFS. But no cure according to the info I was reading, so I didn't pursue the diagnosis. I did pursue a hypo diagnosis at this time...but alas, TSH was Normal at 2. something. I quit work at age 41 and by age 44-45, I would say I was

Unable to work outside the home. I was able to maintain my home okay...but I had lots of physical and psychological problems due to the undiagnosed hashi's/hypo. Things worsened over the next couple of years to where by the time I was diagnosed/treated at age 48, I was pretty much a couch ornament. Couldn't remember what happened from day to the next. A blob. So yes, I became unproductive until being diagnosed with Hashi's/hypo at age 48. I often say now that mentally/psychologically I'm better than I've been since my 20s. Physically, there's been natural aging of course...and it's been rather odd to reconcile having lost so many years of my life to undiagnosed hashi's/hypo...and to feel so much better physically than I have since my early 30s yet also have the natural effects of age (like creaky knees and wrinkles that had been hidden by myxedema). I feel like I'm quite productive

now...although I don't work outside the home. But I'm busy all day long with something or other...and neve think about naps. :-)cindi>> cindi,> does yr post here mean that you were unproductive before reaching the point where u r now? sandra

yes it says forever and ever, or use as embalming fluid, whichever comes first.

I did think it was understood here that after 3 months one would do another test for saturation. As I have said here, at 3 month mark I went down to 12.5mg/day and had a nightmarish day. Went back to 50mg which I have been on for a year. would love to do the test, don't know where the $$ would come from right now.

Gracia

does it say "do well on 50mg/day" forever? or is the info there about most needing that amount for 3 months for saturation per iodine loading test?cindi>> > I think you left something out. The insert says that most peeps do well on 50mg/day.

I'm not sure why you think I wouldn't.

However...my experience has mostly been with new hypo folks

on " thyroid " group. And I do not think I'm in error when I say that

many hypo ladies when they initially present on thyroid forums are

desperate for help. They are brain fogged and tired and with all

sorts of other symptoms. Many times the doctors have just handed

them an anti-depressant and said " TSH normal " , etc.

So, when these ladies ask for advice and are told " you need to take

50 mg. Iodoral " they often just do it. No information is given to

tell them that if they are Hashi's, they may have some problems and

could in fact, get worse. And I've seen some who start with 12.5

and have problems and then they are told to just take more. I could

go on, but perhaps you get the picture.

So I would say that any assumption that new members of thyroid

forums are all are doing iodine loading tests and monitoring thyroid

function and have full information about Iodoral dosing is

incorrect. I'm no longer at " thyroid " group....I got tired of being

told I was scared of iodine just because i provided some information

to folks.

And i think this raises a critical issue that and I got

involved in...is it detox? is it sensitivity to iodine? The answer

is somewhat unclear imo.

but i've clearly stated before that it is my decision...given my

situation...and given my own history....to not force the iodine

issue on myself...because I have no health issues that i feel need

addressing.

And my advice to others when they are feeling ill with iodine..is to

stop...recover...and then start back on a lower dose to see if they

can tolerate it. I always remind them that 12.5 is considered a

good maintenance dose.

The " lump in throat " feeling...I would describe as a vague pressure

in the throat/thyroid area. I would also have trouble swallowing,

like with vitamins. This throat thing is a pretty classic

Hashimoto's symptom. and I think it often shows itself during an

autoimmune flare-up too.

My present acceptable stage was achieved with Armour (4 1/2 grains)

and about 18 months of recovery.

The unmotivated thing is probably one of the last things to go for a

hypo person imo. I think " lack of motivation " and depression and

fleeting fatigue are symptoms that can plague the hypo person even

when they are fuly optimized. imo, it just can go with the hypo

territory. However it was in my 2nd year of recovery when

motivation really picked up...and was no longer the major problem it

had been for me.

No, I'm not at NTH now...but it was a good group when I was

there...and hopefully they're helping you along. I'm sure you've

also read at www.stopthethryoidmadness.com.

It is understood here.

i think folks need that info.

thanks for replying, I think we corresponded a few times on NTH, I remember getting totally overwhelmed with so many digests, that I stopped even opening them, just looking in on it now and again and that is how I found this group mentioned there. Regarding the throat symptoms being a classic of hypoT, do you get it now and did you ever associate it with an emotional reaction to anything? I always found it was particularly painful when upset or even over a weepy movie. Can you tell me what exactly brought about your recovery? tia sandra cindi22595 <cindi22595@...> wrote: The "lump in throat" feeling...I would describe as a vague pressure in the throat/thyroid area. Honestly I don't think I ever remember associating it with an

emotional time. I could say that I can remember the first time it

presented was a very stressful time (new job/going to school at

night/single parent)....and that may well have been true of some

other times.

, since this group is dedicated to iodine...why don't you send

me a personal email with a little background on your hashi's/hypo

situation...and I'll be glad to share any insight I might have...and

tell you more about my own recovery.
