Date: Tue, 9 Feb 2010 00:08:39 -0500 Subject: Cochlear Hearing Hero Hi All, I've been nominated as a Hearing Hero in a contest with Cochlear. Below is my nomination. Need votes so I can win a trip to Denver. Log on to http://www.cochlearcommunity.com/services/heroes_vote.php and help me win. Thanks to all who nominated me!! You can only vote once. Dang. So much for stuffing the ballot box. But you can forward it on to your friend! Thanks, DENISE JANSEN has made me aware of the most significant factor in dealing with a hearing loss - the invaluable one-on-one sharing with someone who devotes real and dedicated attention to any individual with questions, fears, and hopes. That's . She is very encouraging, positive, and realistic with candidates who are considering a cochlear implant. She is also always present at local meetings and support groups for individuals who have hearing loss and willing to go the extra mile to help others out. She is a wonderful and irreplaceable asset to the Northeast Ohio community of cochlear implant recipients. She has always given me direct answers or if she does not know, takes her time to find out. She recently spoke at our monthly HLAA meeting. We had a great turnout and great reviews about her presentation! I can honestly say that after I had been deaf for 7 years, it was because of her influence that I could regain MY life back with a cochlear implant!! has spent her last 20 years or more giving her time to anyone who is considering a cochlear implant. She recently went bi-lateral and can now share her experience to others once again ! leads and helps with numerous organizational tasks, but I know her real love is meeting and encouraging others with hearing loss. cares. Guest guest
Lynn, the jury is still out. Right now, I can't tell much of a difference, although its more comfortable than the Freedom. I am going to meet with the auidie Monday week and discuss it more in detail and remap. The lack of a rechargeable battery does concern me because the rechargeable handle sweat better. The remote assistant is nice but bulky and hard to keep up with. I may end up sending it back, or keeping one and one Freedom. I am not sure yet, but still thinking about it. The Nuke 5 gets about half the battery life of the Freedom, too. Let me know what you end up doing and good luck. I do very well with my Freedom. I'm also holding back because I really like the rechargeable batteries and would prefer to wait until they are available. Guest guest
Does anyone have any idea when they are going to have rechargable batteries for the new implants approved by the FDA? We are going through a set a day, one day one ear, the next day the other ear. It is going to get pretty expensive when we run out of the ones that Cochlear sent in their stuff.  Just checking.  If anyone knows anything, please let me know.   Thanks,   From: ALICE A <alice@...> Subject: Re: Cochlear Hearing Hero Date: Wednesday, February 10, 2010, 11:59 AM  I don't think I was nominated. Guest guest
Hi , The address you log onto to vote, is also part of the Cochlear community website. You can join the community from there. Then they have different groups, and you can join those. I'm the hostess of the Nucleus 5 group. I was implanted with it in mid September. What kind of negative things are you hearing about it? And from whom? It's smaller than the previous external device, can hold 4 programs, uses 2 batteries, and once the FDA approves the rechargeables, will run on that as well. It is a LOT stronger than the old processors were. I had been without hearing in the right ear for 14 years, and go speech comprehension without lipreading with the first mapping. Granted, the sound was high pitched and cartoonish sounding, but that is very common with early mappings. Let us know what you want to know. I'm very impressed with the Nucleus 5, and I think the other implant companies will be trying to follow Cochlear's lead on this one. Internal array is much thinner and surgery is done on an out patient basis, with less swelling. My surgeon does it in 45 minutes. You can wash your hair the next day, and no cutting of hair. With my first implant 14 years ago, I had half my head shaved. The contest is to elect a " Hearing Hero " . There are 6 of us who have been nominated, and now they are holding the election. Not sure when the voting ends, so log on soon and cast a vote. http://www.cochlearcommunity.com/services/heroes_vote.php Jansen Hello, I'm brand new to this list. Guest guest
Hi Alice, You have to be part of the cochlear community to be nominated. I don't think you are (yet). It's a pretty neat site, and I've been on it since it started. First doing information for candidates and users, and just passing on what I learned. Then was asked to hostess a Nucleus 5 users group, since I have that as my bilateral implant. But you need to be a member of the Community, and you needed to be nominated by someone or several someones. Not sure how that worked. Join up, and you can be part of the group next year! To join the Cochlear community, go to: http://www.cochlearcommunity.com There is a way to sign up, and then you just have to log in after that. I don't think I was nominated. Guest guest
Hi , The FDA keeps things pretty close to their chest. The Nucleus 5 was approved quite suddenly, so nobody had much warning on that. Anyone's guess on when the rechargeables will be approved. Meanwhile, next time you go for a mapping, ask the Audi to check how high a power draw you have, and maybe you can get a lower power draw without losing comprehension. You never want to sacrifice hearing for battery life. Are you keeping the batteries in until it goes completely DEAD on you? Because mine once gave the low battery signal, and I got out a couple of batteries to air them out, and the power didn't go off until like 8 hours later. So, maybe your processor is giving a lower power signal when it's not really that close to dying off on you. Keep it on until you are without sound. See how that goes. ____________________________________________________________ Diet Help Cheap Diet Help Tips. Guest guest
I have had the same experience with Med-el. Opus 2 which I was implanted with this past November..I was at the minimum of hearing goal for an implant within the first 2 weeks. after surgery. The Opus 2 has 4 programs, remote device, very light on the ear, rechargable batteries FDA approved and used in the OPUS 2. now, 1 rechargable battery with the option to use disposable batteries.and a sensitivity setting that I control. I was provided with a back up processor as part of my package My surgery was outpatient, 45 minutes approx, no complications, no swelling, No head shaving, washed hair the next day..what exactly would I have gained with the Nucleus 5 that I presently don't have with the Opus 2? What should I anticipate from Med-el since you stated that most implant companies will be following Cochlears lead on this...I am curious what I am missing.? I chose Med-el because I felt more comfortable technically with the internal electrode array which extends the entire length have the cochlea rather than part way. Granted it isn't as pretty but I sure can hear now! ________________________________ From: Nucleus24 <nucleus24@...> Sent: Thu, February 11, 2010 7:51:59 PM Subject: Re: Cochlear Hearing Hero  Hi , The address you log onto to vote, is also part of the Cochlear community website. Guest guest
Hi , Nice to meet you! I just voted for you and will definitely joing the Nucleus 5 group. The negatives that I've heard are from a couple members in my HLA chapter, but they aren't actual N5 users. It's just stuff they've heard through the grapevine - mostly with the external hardware. Specifically, someone mentioned problems with the toggle switch and the telephone loop. I did some research online and found a couple blogs in which people complained about the battery door, as well as needing a screwdriver to unlock the door for the audio cable. Having never had a CI before, I'm not too sure that any of this stuff will even bother me. The main concern I had was that it doesn't have a rechargeable battery yet, but my audiologist at House Ear Clinic has assured me it will be available soon. The positives about the N5 - mainly it being smaller and lighter - really appeal to me, so I'm pretty confident about it at this point. My surgery is 2 weeks from today! One question, in order to use the phone with the N5, do you actually need a neck loop? Anyway, thanks for your email. I will check out the Cochlear site to look for more info. Guest guest
LOL! Of course, you were only testing the system. Right? Try once more and maybe it'll tell you that you've already tried that and if you try it again it'll shut down your computer <g>. Guest guest
The following Cochlear's lead just meant that every company copies what the latest innovations are from the previous. Cochlear copied Med-el's use of 2 batteries side by side rather than 3 batteries stacked on top of each other. 4 program slots was first introduced by Cochlear, I believe, and then Med-el came out with 4 programs. So each company leap frogs on whatever they see another company has. sounds like you are doing well with the Med-el, and couldn't ask for more. So I'm very happy for you. Continued success. denise ____________________________________________________________ Small Business Tools Compete with the big boys. Guest guest
Regina, Could you elaborate a little more on Med-el's internal electrode array? Is it really superior to those that don't extend the full length? I am curious about this since I am in the process of researching CI's. Thanks, Trish > > I have had the same experience with Med-el. I chose Med-el because I felt more comfortable technically with the internal electrode array which > extends the entire length have the cochlea rather than part way. Granted it isn't as pretty but I sure can hear now!
Guest guest
FYI Med-el uses 3 disposable batterries side by side in the Opus 2. Guest guest
Hi Trish, I am a person who tries to research things as much as possible, especially things related to my families health so I did a lot of reading of marketing as well as technical information for all the 3 implant companies. I am very knowledegable in marketing fluff  because I was a marketing director for many years for a technical product. As such I can easily cut through it because I used it! Anyway, as you have prob discovered there is no definitive research that has been done proving 1 companies electrode array is superior to the other although all seem to function well to the implant recipient in what we want most, to hear. However the differences in hearing between people who have various implants has not been done or published at least. The Med-el Opus 2 has 12 electrodes that extend the entire length deeply into the cochlea..In natural hearing the deeper the hair cells the higher pitch the noises that are sensed. It seemed to me that it makes more intuitive sense that an implant run the entire length of the cochlea rather than a shorter length. Although Med-el does offer a shorter length implant for those people who want to retain any residual hearing . I Liked the fact that the array was emulating nature. So my intuition told me that since there is no definitive research and I will hear with any implant, I should go with the implant that makes the most sense to me and not wonder what could have been. My surgeon told me that the only implants he had failures with and had to redo was AB so that really narrowed my field down to Cochlear and Med-el. I liked Med-el's technical information and company philosophy in research and focus on using their money for R and D. I liked that the implant I was getting had been recently improved not like the other company which has not had an internal processor upgrade in 5 years as per my audiologist who has her doctorate and has been working with implant patients since the beginning. I liked the fact that it was backward compatible with future software  upgrades, I liked the disposable batteries and the very light external processor around the ear which helped especially when my ear was healing. I like the remote device although I am afraid I may lose it so I have a spare I purchased. Most of all I love the fact that I now can hear, not perfectly in all situations, but well and the unexpected benefit of being able to hear music that is not off key is a blessing. There are so many factors that go into making a cochlear implant decision. Most important is to do the research and choose the company you feel the most comfortable with for whatever the reason. Best of luck to you! Guest guest
Of course, Virg. There are glitches everywhere and with all the snow you have had 'over there', I had to be sure :-) Ted F. > > LOL! Of course, you were only testing the system. Right?
